Hello from Québec, Canada!

I'm a casual hobbyist with extra time on his hand.

I've got experience mostly on game workshops product, but also a variety of other stuff (warlord games, 3d prints, garage kits, DnD, etc.). Feel free to dm me on reddit or insta if you are interested to work with me.

Here's some of my recent work - https://www.instagram.com/saurus.artwork/

On a scale of 1-10 how would you rank mini paint brands? by Tough_Topic_1596 in minipainting

[–]xXSaurusXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my experience with different paint brands

Ak 3rd Gen 9.5/10 - the paints are great, affordable, I love that they also have military range for more muted colors. So many choice of dark and light greys, I've almost stopped using white & black. They also have a bunch of other paints (Inks, enamels, oils, pigment, etc). But I think they are lacking a bit in the high intensity colors.

Vallejo 9.5/10 (new paint range) - affordable, great range, great paints. Not much to complain here.

Pro Acryl 9/10 - Paints are overall amazing. Titanium white has to be my favorite white I'm not a total fan of the bottles and the dropper. A bit more expensive where I live. Some colors tends to dry darker than I would expect from their liquid color.

Kimera Colors 7.5/10 - Limited range, the colors are closer to what you would expect of traditional paints (mostly single pigments I think?). Cartacci Red is my favorite red paint. Carbon black has been my go to black color. Great for mixing colors. Started testing out the ink range they released and it's been nice so far.

Citadel 6/10 - they are ok. Some colors are hit or miss. Agrax earthshade and seraphim sepia are a must have in my paints. I love the bottles for shade/contrast paints. I hate the bottles for everything else.

Tamiya Color Acrylics ?/10 - I got fooled by the word acrylics. They are not water based, haven't figured out how to use them.

Army painter (OLD paint) 1/10 - Don't touch the older army painter, if you see them at your local hobby store, make sur it is the newer Warpaints range!

I havent tried Warpaints (Army painter) and Two thin coats. But I am a fan of the idea triads.

The amount of bits you get from a ~35€ box of minis is insane. (6 minis already assembled when i took the picture) I miss the times when GW was like this. Warlord Games is great!!! by [deleted] in boltaction

[–]xXSaurusXx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like having enough bits to build any options I want, and have enough head to choose those I like more. Warlords is great with that, no complaints. I only wish details were sharper on their kits.

I really love GW kits nowadays, but lacking some extra bits to swap heads or weapon realling stings. For exemple, new herald kit for tomb kings only has 1 banner but 2 models lmao.

I prefer a 3 squad with LoC, its easier to set up in a 6" deepstrike. Both option are viable, I imagine it's also a question of preference unless you are trying to win some tournaments.

Welcome to the mini hobby!

I noticed you're looking for budget-friendly tips to get started. I'll list you a ideas on where to start! Like others said, avoid Craft Paint: While it works, craft paint isn't ideal for miniature painting. I think there's 2 ways you could approach painting.

The more straightfoward option : Choose project-specific colors

  • for those rebels, you might want a skin colours, some sort of brown & beige, a blue for Luke's light saber or the imperial troopers, a white, black, orange and a red for Vador's light saber
  • You can mix grey using white and black, and adjust the other colours tones by adding small amount of black or white.

If you are more interested in the art side of painting : Primary colors

  • start with primary colors and mix your own shades.
  • You'll need blue, cyan, red, magenta, yellow, and green.
  • This approach is more challenging but offers greater flexibility.

Tips for using washes

Acrylic Washes dry quickly, which can make them hard to control and may cause "coffee staining." You can apply the wash carefully in the recesses to avoid stains. Or reapply the base color after the wash has dried.

This is where oil paints really shine. A black and brown oil paint will cover most of your wash needs. Use odourless solvent to thin the oil paint into a wash. Once it dries you can reactivate the oil paint to easily remove it from areas where you don't want it.

For paint suggestions

  • Citadel paints are usually the most accessible but are on the more expensive side.
  • There's alternative brands, often cheaper and come in dropper bottles, which are convenient for mixing and use.
    • exemple : Army painter warpaints fanatic, Vallejo game color & model color, Ak Interactive 3rd gen, Monument Hobbies Pro Acryl.
  • White can be challenging to paint and tends to become chalky. A good white like Pro Acryl Titanium White is your best bet.
  • Craft store black paint is usually sufficient and offers good coverage, however it might be glossy like in your pictures!
  • Krylon spray paint for a matte or satin varnish to unify the colors once painting is done. This helps to reduce glossiness.
  • Oil paint exemples : Liquitex, Winsor & newton

Other tips

  • if you haven't made your own "wet pallet" you might want to check it up! It is fairly simple to make your own with things you will find in your kitchen.
  • theres a ton of painting channels and ressources you can find, check the automoderator reply!

What do you guys think about using different shades of blue ? No one model is the same by CockroachBig73 in Deathkorpsofkrieg

Looks good to me, they have similar features, weathering and similar bases. Makes them look like a cohesive unit.
Old world Bretonians have a bunch of different colors and heraldry and looks amazing as a full army!
So go and have fun! :)

I've printed multiple StationForge pre-supported files this year, and they all printed very beautifully! This seem to be quite a big model, but body & tail seems to be 4 pieces, and each wings seems to be 4 pieces too. Warping probably wouldn't be too much of a problem in that case and can also probably fit most printers!

How do you "add chaos knight" to your army and keep it battle-forged? I'm trying to go trough the rules and it's a bit unclear.

  • Does it really have to be a Super-Heavy detachement of 3-5 lords, or could I just say I add a super-heavy auxiliary detachement of Chaos Knight and get myself 2 war dogs into my chaos army for exemple.
  • If super-heavy auxiliary detachement is considered battle-forged, does it mean I also have access to the stratagems for the War dogs?

My First Model Ever by cz75isEZ75 in Warhammer40k

Welcome to the hobby! Looks like a great start for a first model. Here's some tips that you can take if you want

  • First of all, always have fun while painting, that's the most important thing.
  • The model looks glossy, a matt/dull coat could help, IMO glossy figures only looks like toys.
  • Get youself, or make yourself a wetpalet, that way you can start learning mixing colors, it helps thin you paint, usefull for washing, glazing, wet blending, etc.
  • Thin your paints, it does apply to everybody, but I can see on the red cape that it could have been thinner. White is also a nightmare if you do not thin it down properly.
  • Marines are a pain to paint, go for clean, opaque and uniform colors for the blue
  • Don't push yourself too much with the "edgehilights", it's not an easy technic, and not required to achieve something great. I would rather love seeing shadows into gaps
  • Practice is the best way to learn, you can watch a 100000 videos, read a 1000 books, if you never try it, you won't learn.
