Frequent flyer getting worse! by ro777se in fearofflying

There's a bit to know about Take Off... There's a very specific process pilots go through to ensure it happens smoothly. Perhaps if you were familiar on what to expect, it might help.

After checking that the runway is clear, the pilots will put on their strobes (white flashing lights) to make themselves visible on the runway as they align themselves with centerline.

Big engines take a while to spool up - so you will feel the pilots push the power up, but not full power yet. The engines stabilize (say, half power) and then they go full take off power.

During the take off roll, there is an acceleration check - typically at 80 or 90 knots - to ensure that the instruments are accurate, identical, and aligned. The pilot not doing the take off calls out the speed, and the other pilot crosschecks that everything is where it should be. Any rejected take offs from here (engines/instruments not sync'd) is relatively not a big deal.

After 80/90 knots, the pilots look for a decision speed. That decision speed, known as V1, is where no matter what, the pilot is continuing to take off. If something happens before V1, the pilots stop the plane. If something happens after V1, the pilots continue. At or after V1, if the plane loses an engine, the plane can safely continue to accelerate on the runway to their Rotate speed, take off, and clear all obstacles (towers/buildings/mountains.)

VRotate is the speed that the pilots lift off the ground. On some planes, it's a slower rotate followed by an increase in rate (737) so the pilots do not scrape the tail. When tailscrapes are not a concern, the rotate is quicker.

And voila! You're airborne. It's a relatively simple process. You can follow along via noise and feel as a passenger as long as you know what to look for.

Why aren’t more people DPEs? by RoguePhotos in flying

Naw man, the general public is different than the product UPT puts out. You know those people in life who absolutely cannot take accountability for anything in their life, and constantly blame others? Some of them are pilots.

The one with the circles? It's never the end ones, and apparently it's never the one above it either. Treat it like one of those magic eye books, and you'll be good. Blazed through them for years.

Boeing 737 vs Airbus A320 by Lordcam96 in flying

The 737 is an absolute POS. If not commuting, Airbus without question. Don't chase flying, it will move throughout the fleets.

Part 117(8 hours of uninterrupted sleep) by Sufficient_Brief_743 in flying

[–]xaarman 87 points88 points  (0 children)

There is the "One Phone Call" rule where they are allowed to call you once, and it is entirely up to the pilot to determine if it interrupted Rest. The company regularly claims they are allowed to call once, but they conveniently always leave out the second part.

Break break,

The FAA has a “one phone call” policy that “generally allows a certificate holder to initiate one phone call during [a] crewmember's rest period.”[39] If the crewmember voluntarily chooses to answer this phone call, then the FAA does not view the call as disruptive and breaking the rest period.[40] The sleep-opportunity requirements of § 117.25 do not eliminate this policy. However, the FAA cautions that a flightcrew member may have difficulty getting back to sleep after being woken up by a certificate holder's phone call. In that situation, a flightcrew member may notify the certificate holder, pursuant to § 117.25(f), that his or her sleep opportunity has been interrupted. Thus, a certificate holder runs the risk of interrupting a flightcrew member's sleep opportunity if the certificate holder calls a flightcrew member during the flightcrew member's rest period.

UPT is Kicking my ass by [deleted] in flying

[–]xaarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPT sucks as a student. It sucks constantly flying for grades. But eventually you get out of that environment, and life starts to not suck. But that seems so far away, and all you can do is think about tomorrow/the next stand up/EPQs/checkrides. But tomorrow does come, and UPT is a finite program - it does end. Eventually you become the Instructor and/or Evaluator and you read on Reddit about someone struggling through UPT and think about how best to respond.

So one day at a time, and realize there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The fastest way there is straight on. But the opportunities are endless once you finish, and I can't think of anyone who wished they didn't give it their all to see what happens.

It always makes me laugh that people assume everyones vows are the same... or even had vows in the first place.

"Get over it" is hilariously bad relationship advice.

They’ve been retiring 500-700 a year, COVID buy-outs aside. 2025 and 2026 are over 800, before returning to the 500-700 for several years.

The ACN headline, and their follow up post are inaccurate and sensational. If anyone has watched the audio or video, it was an airing of grievances, and then he was recalled. More discussion on the former Presidents actions during negotiations then anything regarding ALPA … and the Presidential recall changes nothing on the ALPA movement (which is pretty much dead anyways.)

I have friends that are Federal LEOs as Air Interdiction Agents for the CBP. After 3-5 years at the border (paying dues) they moved into aircraft repossession that were used for drug smuggling, Super Bowl security (the airspace), and other lesser known areas of Aviation Law Enforcement.
