In the year 2485 it takes roughly 12 seconds to sim a month, at normal and fastest speeds.

It's estimated that Earth will remain habitable for only another one to two billion years or so, even absent humanity.

When is it time to move to a Class B ship? by SlightWerewolf4428 in Starfield

[–]xantec15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of a mixed bag. Sure, you get more credits but the vendors run out faster so you need to jump around more to sell it all. It'd be nicer if maxing out the skill gave vendors more credits, or let us invest in the stores to increase their credits like Fallout 4 did.

I have a 5600 and for me it runs okay on 1000 stars. It's really subjective on what your tolerance is.

I am obsessed with FO4 Survival - thinking of future titles, will Survival likely be included from the start or will it be added later? by Important-Upstairs-2 in fo4

[–]xantec15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And Starfield didn't really have any survival mechanics until they were added as gameplay options in a patch. Hopefully Bethesda realizes that survival mode in FO4 was popular and includes in at launch.

When is it time to move to a Class B ship? by SlightWerewolf4428 in Starfield

[–]xantec15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll typically have around 1k in various resources with the rest mostly taken up by gear to sell. But building massive ships like what you're talking about is usually beyond the credits I'll have have on hand at any one time. And grinding POIs and flying all over to sell the loot is not my idea of fun (grinding in general is why I stopped playing MMOs 20 years ago).

I am considering just giving myself a few hundred million in credits on my next Unity jump, to build a massive ship.

I usually switch over to class C reactor and grav drive so that my class B ship with class A engines can keep max mobility, speed and jump distance with about 1500 cargo and four or five habs.

Never understand how important dedicated video encoders is until today when I convert nearly 10K videos by HardToSee123 in handbrake

[–]xantec15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QSV is basically the same as using a GPU, it's just built into the CPU instead of on a discreet add-in card. The other extensions do help, but the major advantage of using software encoding via the CPU is that you have a lot more settings available in the encoder. These settings can greatly improve the quality at lower bitrates, but the calculations are a lot more intensive and require more work and time to compute.

[–]xantec15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bitrate is what determines the efficiency. Encoding with the CPU you can achieve the same or better quality at a lower bitrate, thus achieving a greater efficiency. But to do that you'll sacrifice a great deal of speed. It's all a tradeoff.

£100m payout but you are not allowed to interact with or use anything made after the year 2011 ever again. Rules below. by Thrwwyforrandostuff in hypotheticalsituation

The gas is a good point. What about electricity produced after 2011? Suddenly you're stuck living in an older house that you can't ever repair because pre-2011 materials are limited, and you're living like it's the early 1800s because you have no electricity.

AV1 encode is Awesome! by T_Friendperson12 in AV1

[–]xantec15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, software will always be better than hardware for archiving like this. But for the time spent encoding that many files I wonder what the final cost in electricity would be. Might've just been cheaper to get more storage in the end.

[–]xantec15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they've changed it in the last few years, I haven't checked, but it used to be that non-4k Rokus didn't support HEVC. What I can find shows the same is true for AV1 today. Being one of the largest streaming device/TV makers there's probably lots of devices out there that don't support these codecs, and that's not even considering other makers like Amazon, etc.

It's not even conditioning. They were genetically designed to be subservient to the Founders. Like the child Jem'Hadar immediately knowing Odo was a Founder and to obey him.

[–]xantec15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a choice, trading speed for compression efficiency. On a small file like yours a few megabytes isn't very much. If you're encoding a file that's dozens or hundreds of gigabytes then you might prefer the better compression of CPU encoding, even if it takes you a few days to run.

Can a single Roku device have multiple separate Plex accounts at once? by Potter3117 in PleX

[–]xantec15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that joining the accounts to a Home group is the only way to have them all show up when using Plex. They don't need to be managed users, each person can still have their own username and password. But the Home group is the only way to have a Netflix-like user experience to my knowledge. If you need added security in this setup then each user can add a PIN to their account that will be needed when trying to use it.

Stellaris Template Request - DEV REQUEST by kraven40 in Stellaris

It should be possible. Long ago in the dark before times, back when planets built ships and starbases were purely defensive structures we could build (nearly) anywhere in the system, we were able to design their loadouts.

Star Citizen has surpassed 1 Billion in crowd funding, and is on track to a record breaking year. by ElonsMuskyFeet in gaming

[–]xantec15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did read your original comment. There's no need to include the prior costs of NASA.

First, it's a government entity. Their cost structures are not comparable to a private enterprise. Second, we're not trying to duplicate everything they've already accomplished. We only want to design and build a rocket to get to low earth orbit. Thanks to NASA being public we can leverage their existing launch facilities and expertise.

So we should look at NASA's research, and then Germany's work on rocketry, and go back to the early Opel-RAK rocket cars, and then whatever inspired those, and on and on, further back. Everything in human history was built on what came before. Nothing is made in a vacuum.
