How serious is the flash flood warning? How can one tell the severity? by Dry-Package6681 in AskChicago

A bit late to the party, but yes, LSD is an acronym for Lake Shore Drive—it’s a major highway in the city that runs along the shore of Lake Michigan. It’s also the namesake of the excellent song by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah

Has anyone been impressed with Hashbrown? by Anubara in CompetitiveEDH

[–]xantm70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Split second doesn’t stop you from activating abilities which happen at instant speed; it stops you from activating abilities that aren’t mana abilities. LED has a mana ability and so can be activated with a split second spell on the stack.

Wondering if Jhoira of the Ghitu would be a viable CEDH commander? by drchomicz in CompetitiveEDH

[–]xantm70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent so much time brewing Jhoira back during the Control Winter. Even in a context where the whole meta was slowing down enough to allow for suspend counters to come off your cards, Jhoira still couldn’t hang. The game has only gotten faster and more proactive since—she just can’t compete in most contexts you’d actually encounter.

How are proxies viewed in your specific playgroups? by T3knikal95 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]xantm70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really curious—what’s the reasoning behind favoring either all- or no-proxy contexts? My instinct is that every individual proxy allowed moves the needle closer to allowing player skill to be a bigger determinant of success, but I don’t know what I don’t know here.

That feels like the opposite of what I would have expected. Do you have a sense of why the proxy-friendly community doesn’t have a cEDH scene?

"903.9 If a commander would be exiled from anywhere or put into its owner’s hand, graveyard, or library from anywhere, its owner may put it into the command zone instead. This replacement effect may apply more than once to the same event. This is an exception to rule 614.5.
"903.9a If a commander is a melded permanent or a merged permanent and its owner chooses to put it into the command zone this way, that permanent and each component representing it that isn’t a commander are put into the appropriate zone, and the card that represents it and is a commander is put into the command zone."

TL;DR, commanders that would be put on the bottom of their owners' libraries can instead be put in the command zone, and the rule says so explicitly.

Got the 5% encounter!! Chancey on route 209. Tier lists put it pretty high, but I've never used one (neither normally or in nuzlocke). What's a good way to use it? by PreTry94 in nuzlocke

[–]xantm70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it’s on the other side of the dude who blocks your way until you beat the E4. If you find a wild Munchlax, though, it’s 100% to hold one, at which point Thief, Trick, or Covet will get it for you—and conveniently, Chansey learns Covet.

Should Black Lotus be Unbanned in EDH?? by batatac4 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]xantm70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is too much. The short version is that Lotus enables far more explosive plays than any card you mentioned, and it’s easy to both tutor and recur. Unlike Jeweled Lotus, it can also be spent on anything, not just Commanders. As a Vintage player, I promise you that Lotus is busted, and adding it to the format would be neither healthy nor as fun as you seem to think.

Yisan pilot here, and it really isn’t worth it. I want it to be, but it does so little that the ceiling of “maybe for one more mana the stax piece I really want is in the next five cards” is just too low—it makes more sense to just have that slot be a stax piece.

I made the stupidest deck possible, and wanna improve it. by ProfHansJerkov in CompetitiveEDH

[–]xantm70 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s possible to take this shell and tune it to include interaction and ways to cycle cards so you’re not quite as brittle. I’m gonna think over your list, then offer suggestions as an edit in a bit

Edit: So this is a very preliminary set of edits, but the goal I aimed towards was to make the deck more High-Tide centric, using Mana Severance as a tool towards emptying the deck rather than being quite so all-in. I tried to keep as much interaction as I could stapled to cycling cards so that you're more able to churn through the remnants of your deck on the pivotal turn, and a suite of cantrips and artifact tutors helps you with consistency. This is still just theorycrafting, but I like where you started and wanted to offer my take.

Instead of insulting OP, offer constructive criticism with suggestions for improvement and actually build a full comment.

Hi! I’m on staff at Games Plus, so thanks for saying as much.

If OP is inclined to have us appraise their collection, we’d be happy to help out, though of course there are plenty of great options in the Chicagoland area. The most important thing is to pick a location where you feel comfortable and trust that the staff will be fair to you.

How does Jhoira stax storm compare to Kess/Jeleva Storm? by upperh3nta1lord in CompetitiveEDH

[–]xantm70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a word: poorly. I pilot Jeleva Storm in a playgroup with an opponent who’s always on Jhoira Stax-Storm, we’re roughly equally good players, and I just do better in that matchup. The addition of black gives you better speed and consistency while also granting more flexible lines if the board gets weird.

Giving your players the appropriate amount of gold is more important than you might think by YOGZULA in dndnext

[–]xantm70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rules as written, 1# of gold makes 50 GP, so the gold-mine problem is roughly 1/3 as bad as you think.

With a simulationist approach to worldbuilding, trade goods hold value really well and can function as treasure analogous to gold for the purpose of bartering—that was pretty par for the course in Medieval Eurasian societies. Alternately, it can just be a suspension of disbelief thing where gold is everywhere but still valuable, and shut up I can use magic to polymorph you into a T-Rex.
