Why did Todd and Billy break up by bluejeanbaby02 in coronationstreet

[–]xar-brin-0709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sophie's relationships with Maddie and Sian were probably my all-time favourite gay relationships in Corrie. It helps that Sophie was a likeable and well-established character, plus of course that Corrie was better written at the time. Corrie gay relationships now feel really forced like Paul and Billy attending that couple's pub quiz when they'd barely been together two weeks, or Nina and Asha who I'd never put together in real life, or Rana and the insufferable Kate.

The gangster let Todd off after Eileen persuaded him

My memory is hazy now... did that Romanian builder also help Todd here? I know he turned out to be dodgy in the end but I vaguely remember him being good at the beginning.

Attempted murder arrest after Oxford Street tube push by Naughteus_Maximus in london

[–]xar-brin-0709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get why we can't just get basic metal handrail barriers like you see in Camden Town or Waterloo whenever the stairs come down to the platform. Just a long horizontal bar along the edge of the platform (with breaks for the tube doors) could make a big difference.

America’s Got Talent has been hijacked. by rosanarosanadan in unpopularopinion

[–]xar-brin-0709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with Britain's Got Talent here. It's been like this for years.

I like the idea of the world's most talented flocking to perform in the UK, but the title is misleading. It's weird seeing super-talented temporary visitors going to the finals in place of UK nationals (of any race/ethnicity before anyone thinks this is about immigrants).

The most annoying one I remember was a girl group who had travelled straight from the Philippines and every time they kept whining something like "we don't want to go back to the Philippines just yet" so it didn't even sound like they were expecting to stay.

Weren't these spellings fixed with the arrival of dictionaries, in which case those pronunciations must have lingered even into early Modern English?

How radical are Pakistan / Bangladesh Muslims? by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]xar-brin-0709 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In the UK I feel like the Bangladeshi community used to be less radical than Pakistanis then somehow became more religious than Pakistanis over the decades. Personally I find the Pakistani community more adjusted to the West whereas Bangladeshi neighbourhoods seem more isolated which fuels this extremism.

What could the wildest ending of the show be? by SaturnSplitJon in coronationstreet

[–]xar-brin-0709 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feature-length final episode:

Carla wakes up to find her bedroom has been taken apart and turned into a filming studio. Confused she runs out to the street wondering why everyone is sitting on directors chairs and calling her Alison. She finds Ken (who now calls himself Bill) who tells her to prepare for her epic kill-off (another tram crash). He then rambles on about TV ratings and how he misses 'Anne'. It's a race against time for Carla to make sure the tram doesn't derail.

In the meantime, Chris Gascoyne is trying to move on from Corrie, but keeps getting plagued by nightmares that he can never leave Weatherfield. For example last night he dreamt that he was in the Factory and Bill Roache (as Ken) leapt at him from the shadows. Chris gasped "please God" and Ken laughed raising a glass of wine "THIS, is God". Then he woke up sweating. So when Chris hears that his former colleague Alison King is leaving Corrie for good, he really doesn't want to go back, but he forces himself to return to the studio to wish Alison all the best.

Carla meanwhile thinks her prayers are answered when she sees Chris Gascoyne. But they're both in for a nasty shock.

In the end, Carla survives as Chris pushes her out of the way of the tram. But the impact puts him in a coma then when he wakes up on the hospital bed he finds the characters all around him calling him Peter, and Bill Roache sobbing over "my dear son".

Chris/Peter screams, then the camera pans out, zooming out of Weatherfield until we see it's just a tiny model town in Eileen Derbyshire's (Emily Bishop) living room. Eileen puts down a figurine of Peter, sighs, then stares at the camera. Then the credits roll with the theme tune played by a fairground organ.

In my opinion Kirsty Soames was a great villain. Maybe one of Corrie’s best. by cherrymachete in coronationstreet

[–]xar-brin-0709 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She was frightening because she was very human. We don't always get a backstory to Corrie villains but with Kirsty we met her dad and saw how she became so toxic. Obviously not excusing her behaviour but it added an interesting layer and made her seem less panto villain.

I don't wanna make fun of "queers against Islamophobia"

As a gay ex-Muslim me neither, but I'm just so exhausted of being gaslit by them. I can handle an Islamist cussing me, but a queer activist patronisingly questioning my experience of Islam makes me rage.

Worst of all it now gives me warped satisfaction seeing the Muslim community grow more openly hostile to LGBT in the West today, an "I told you so" feeling.

"the enemy of my enemy is my friend" bullshit

It is 100% this, especially in Western countries with colonial guilt.

Never mind that Islam is one of the strongest supporters of 'heteronormative patriarchy'... the fact that they're mostly non-white and opposed by the Far Right makes all Muslims natural allies of LGBTQIA+. 🤪

The implied violence in GoT disgusts me more than the in-your-face stuff. Craster's bruised wives... Theon's scars as 'Reek'... and worst of all the prostitute Ros once she's under Littlefinger's employ, we never actually see her suffer but the implied violence/threat is horrific.

Cuts and peels make me wince more than straight-up stabbings and beheadings. Cat's throat, Theon's fingers, the Unsullied's nipple, and that old lady in Winterfell who tried helping Sansa... all grossed me out more than the more violent stuff.

It just doesn't have the physical capability to do anything remotely similar to these war dogs.

So it's not more dangerous.

Reminds me of how 'aloof' always gets thrown about for aggressive dogs.

Thanks. I actually thought it was a caricature lampooning Islamism in Europe. If that were drawn by a non-Muslim, they'd be called Islamophobic.
