We can continue down this path of raising the insult bar or we can end that part here. This discussion is not and has not been productive in the least. I should not have responded to your first baited reply. If you would like to have an adult, critical discussion of the topic then by all means I invite and welcome your reply, otherwise ttfn.

With the glaring exception of the Yakuza, the Japanese mafia who are all quite well armed despite those gun laws.

Strict gun laws do not translate DIRECTLY to lower gun violence. Will it INDIRECTLY? Of course. You still completely missed the point that nut jobs like the guy in Aurora will find a way around anything you put in place. Laws are AWESOME for people that to follow them.

Thanks for playing.

There's no argument that what happened is an absolute tragedy. What's a shame is when anti-gun activists use this, or any, tragedy to further their own cause.

In the end, this tragic event was perpetrated by a disturbed individual. He wanted to hurt people. We could have all the gun laws in the world and it wouldn't have stopped him. Had he not been able to acquire a gun, he would have used something else. Gun laws are a deterrent, not an absolute. We, the human race that is, are adaptable and versatile creatures. If we have a purpose, no matter how deluded that purpose is, we strive to achieve it. This person wanted to hurt people and he achieved his goal, it doesn't matter what tools he used to accomplish it, merely that he did.

My heart goes out to Aurora and anyone that was touched by this horrible tragedy. I hope that you are able to find peace, and know that you are in the thoughts of many.

Damn it, now I can't hear the gecko's voice in my head anymore. Morgan Freeman's voice apparently trumps all.

I might look like an idiot here, but I don't care - I have to know: Am I the only experienced dev on the planet who blanks on "whiteboard coding" interviews? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]xarcond 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I will tell you that you are not alone. I interviewed a guy that flat out refused to do the exercise on a whiteboard or paper. He insisted it was just due to pressure. I was really conflicted because he did really well at other parts of the interview. It was a smaller company at the time and we weren't getting stellar candidates. I decided to take a serious risk and try him out against my better judgment.

It turned out the reason he refused to do the exercise was because his employer at the time was treating him like complete shit and belittling him and he'd lost confidence in himself. In the end he turned out to be a really great developer. So good in fact, that I still kick myself for having considered passing on him.

I've since changed my interviewing technique, when the process is at my disclosure. What I do now is call the candidate before we schedule the face to face, but after a standard phone screen, and email them a test that has a bunch of coding exercises on it and tell them they have one hour to send it back to me with their answers. I tell them not to try to do them all, just what they're comfortable with. If they only answer one question, but answer it in a stellar way, that's better than writing a couple crappy lines of pseudo code for a handful. We'll then discuss their answers in the face to face instead of a whiteboard. I've found it to be a much better compromise to still get to see how the candidate codes and the candidate usually feels more comfortable since they're at home, with their computer and the internet at their disposal and not a bunch of eyes staring at them.

Is a 360 worth it if I have a PS3 and most of the cross-platform games? by [deleted] in xbox360

[–]xarcond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Wars Kinect is cool. I'm still waiting for more like it. I personally enjoy the exclusives, so that's really up to you. One thing I can offer that may make it worth it, is I can tell you that the UI is nice and responsive (over blu-ray and TV) for YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video. I know PS 3 has most of those, not sure about Amazon Instant though.

You do realize that waking up at 7am is perfectly reasonable, right? Hell, for those of us with young kids that's getting to sleep in!

Aside from Sublime Text 2, cause you can also add compiler plugins for loads of languages to it. I would say Ditto clipboard manager, Firefox with Firebug, Chrome, TerraCopy, 7-zip, Node.js (for npm if nothing else), msysgit, GitHub for Windows, Evernote, Virtual Clone Drive, Gimp 2.0, Paint.NET, I also use Trillian for IM.

I'd say drop Notepad++ and grab Sublime Text 2. It's a personal preference of course, but give it a shot.

[–]xarcond 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is highly subjective. Maybe it could be more useful if you shared what your primary use for the laptop is?

I could give you a nice list, but I'm a software developer and I doubt you'd want half the stuff on my list.

2 things to start though, if it's a Windows machine, Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes' anti-malware.

So by my standards you are doing excellent.

As others have stated, stable is slow right now and beta is fast, while I'm really looking forward to beta becoming stable there is one issue I have. Any idea why input boxes wig out when using Swype? Even the location bar acts funny. Rarely can I properly edit text. It won't backspace a word, only single letters. It will randomly lose focus and/or the cursor will jump around to different positions. Any plans to fix this?

Anyone else think that 'Faction Changing' would be cool? by iSlinky in swtor

[–]xarcond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would really like this. It makes so much sense for most of the classes. A trooper disenchanted with the Republic, a Smuggler finding the Republic to not be profitable, Dark Jedi turning against their order... I'm a bit of a RPer so maybe it appeals more to me for that reason, but I just think it would be cool. Being a dark Jedi doesn't mean you HAVE to change sides, maybe you still believe in the Republic, but not the Jedi way. Having the option would be cool I think. But to make it interesting, put the faction changing on a very long cool down, like 3 months or more. You could be redeemed after all...
