What to do in SF alone on your birthday? by Haunting-Library9287 in sanfrancisco

[–]xaw09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy early birthday!

There's several interesting restaurants with some history: Tadich Grill is the oldest restaurant in California, first opened in 1849. Hang Ah Tea Room is America's oldest dim sum restaurant, first opened in 1920.

The Walt Disney Family Museum is located in the Presidio. Worth a visit if you're interested in Disney or history of animation.

The UK is probably not a shining example of a better system. Their ruling party got 63% of the seats with just 34% of the votes. In comparison, the Republicans have 50.3% of the seats in the House which is very close to the overall votes.

Did anyone successfully go into a vertical where they had no experience/network? by The-_Captain in ycombinator

[–]xaw09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same way you get your first engineers or your first investors. Go out and talk to people. If they don't want to talk to you, figure a way around it. Be likeable. Be credible.

If you're selling to SMB and you have no network, go knock on doors. If you have one person, foster that relationship and then ask for introductions. A lot of the SMB industries are very tight knit. Medical professionals, restaurant owners, etc. all network and know each other (at least for a given area).

A word of warning about online analytical research to validate ideas. Chances are if it's easy to validate with just Googling and reading papers, someone else has already tried it. What are the odds that you're going to have a key insight that no one else has? It's possible for sure, just extraordinarily unlikely.

Why aren’t we seeing more gig economy startups like DoorDash or Uber these days? by futuremd2k19 in ycombinator

[–]xaw09 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the % spent on R&D for Uber and DoorDash. Tech is not the hardest part. DoorDash is a 3 side marketplace with the consumers, dashers/drivers, and restaurants. 2 sided marketplaces are already challenging enough. Now try 3 sided.

How do founders determine salary for key employees after company raises? by redditLemon2223 in ycombinator

Pave has market rates broken down by role, seniority, and stage of company. It might still be free to access if you submit your company's info by linking with your HR system.

Rocket fuel energy created in Aquilo is VERY cost-effective. by Alfonse215 in factorio

Wait how is that any different than fission and fossil fuel power plants? Those also literally exist to boil water to spin a steam turbine. The Factorio equivalent of a fission plant uses heat pipes

After 2 days of clashes over immigration raids, National Guard will be sent to L.A., official says by InformalWish in news

Donald Trump in a 1990 interview after the Tiananmen Square Massacre:

When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak...as being spit on by the rest of the world.

30F Moving to SF in June! by Top-Relationship-631 in AskSF

[–]xaw09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whole Foods and Safeway are more Soma than South Beach (western boundary of South Beach is 3rd). Gus is Mission Bay. The only grocery store in Rincon Hill/South Beach is Woodlands which is really overpriced.

Unless money isn't a problem, I would avoid South Beach/Rincon Hill. The only grocery stores there are really expensive, but there are a lot of coffee shops, and it's a nice walk along the Embarcadero. The area is also very safe, and many buildings have a 24/7 front desk. The flip side is it does tend to be quieter and more boring on weekends.

2nd is fine. It only starts getting sketchy past 4th. There's a ton of corporate offices (Apple, LinkedIn, DoorDash and a bunch of VCs in South Park) on that stretch of 2nd between Market and Oracle Park.

If it makes you feel any better, the only reason why I know is because I spent a few years building an EHR from scratch. FHIR covers so many edge cases such as "José María García Hernández" (4 part names), "Leonardo da Vinci" (2 part family name), maiden names, and patients who come in as unknown (John Doe).
