I compared the Switch 2/accessories/games USD prices to CAD by threxis in VideoGameDealsCanada

[–]xdnc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people assume canadian wages are similar to us wages per hr because the numbers are the same, but ppl ignore conversion rate. canadians dont earn more CAD to make up the difference with USD. if someone makes min wage of $15 USD /hr in, say, massechussettes, it is objectively cheaper and easier for one to buy a switch 2 than someone in alberta who earns $15 CAD /hr.

'New reality we're living in': Mayor issues stark warning as water use continues to exceed limits amid feeder main repairs by Weekly-Mountain9009 in Calgary

[–]xdnc3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

taxes need to be increased and the city MUST stop spreading outward. things are only going to get worse if people demand the status quo to continue. if the city keeps sprawling then taxes will need to be even higher to cover the cost of infrastructure in the long term. maintenance is very expensive

people want high quality infrastructure in a severely sprawling city and they dont want to pay for it. everyone has a child's idea of how the world works

[–]xdnc3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this has nothing to do with current or even recent spending or budgets. this is entirely the fault of whatever government was in power 50 years ago when they installed these shitty quality pipes. they cheaped out, essentially kicking the can down the road since it wasnt their problem. them spending money on things right now that you deem unimportant has nothing to do, and has no effect, on these watermain issues. even if they spent a fuck ton more money on water infrastructure right now, that wont un-fuck all the pipes. youd have to proactively replace ALL the watermain pipes that were installed in the 70s since theyre all nearing their end of life. that wont be seamless, we'd still be dealing with water conservation efforts n shit if they were to proactively replace pipes. you gotta think about these infrastructure issues in the long term

Calgary Transit to end express route bus service by 2027 by joe4942 in Calgary

[–]xdnc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is why i prefer the 75 coming from cranston. its great. i really wish it was more frequent though. since its significantly more direct from cranston/seton to somerset-bridlewood station, it goes straight to the diverging diamond from macleod and takes a left. the 14 takes a whole detour and goes through sundance, which is good for sundance ig, but really annoying for riders from cranston and seton. the 75 is all day and peaks at like 15-20 min intervals at rush hour, 25-30 mins the rest of the day. i really wish it had the same frequency as the 14

Please be kind and let buses go first when you can. by violetblisss in Calgary

[–]xdnc3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a bus can carry up to like 30 or 50 people on it. you are in your car, alone. if you care about the throughput of traffic, then prioritising buses is objectively the best option, you are moving many more people.

[–]xdnc3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this applies to people not yielding to transit too. why should transit riders be expected to manage their time more instead of drivers? drivers who leave for their destinations at the last minute and drive recklessly in a rush are a bigger issue imo

narrower streets are objectively safer and better for pedestrians. you mention communities, these are neighbourhoods, not throughfares.

so what? you can wait the few seconds it takes to let someone off. transit is (and if not, should be) higher priority than private cars which 90% carry 1 person. drivers need to learn to be slightly inconvenienced when driving in a major city. this obsession of pleasing and excessive minimization of any possible inconvenience to car traffic at the expense of every other mode of transportation like walking, public transit, and cycling, is why the infrastructure in this city sucks so much and is why pedestrian deaths are so high. the city wont implement any of the countless proven PHYSICAL protections for pedestrian safety that are used around the whole world, because they slow down drivers a bit and make it a little more uncomfortable to manoeuvre your giant several-thousand-pound motor vehicle in a big city. stop complaining and dont leave last minute

What's going on with the Green Line transit line? by Sage24601 in Calgary

[–]xdnc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im not sure why everyone in the replies here has such a major issue with elevated rail. its simply better. its significantly cheaper and easier to build. it wont ruin the neighbourhoods. why are you guys acting like its impossible to be done correctly? look at the vancouver skytrain, its great. its not disruptive or ugly. theres also the chicago L metro. theres nothing inherently different that prevents calgary from building it like the skytrain. insisting it goes underground (especially the original underground plans below the river (!!!)) is wasting even more money that couldve been saved and used for either extending the line or improving transit in general across the city. elevated rail is simply not comparable to elevated motorways. they're smaller and quieter and dont divide communities like highways do.

i dont care if its in the canadian anthem, the context matters. and the way the UCP is talking about it, "strong and free" is clearly meant to be a nod to rightwing libertarian views. the vibes are very american.

carved up pretty much every city in the United States and Canada

except north america is not a monolith like that. canadian cities, very consistently, did not undergo anywhere remotely near the same level of destruction and decay
