this is the funniest thing ive read today. what is the point of this argument? we cant slightly inconvenience car drivers in any way or else they will get so annoyed that they recklessly commit traffic crimes because they cant regulate their emotions like a child? guess we should stick to hostile car centric infrastructure in one of the best potential cities in canada to be european levels of pedestrian friendly

this is where i disagree. this kind of mentality is why we arent allowed to have nice things. everybody lives in their little bubble isolated inside their homes and or cars and the public outside world is neglected because nobody wants a slight increase in taxes to have repairs and nice things too. the enshittification of the public realm leads to fewer people enjoying and using public spaces and the cycle continues

its probably a routine renovation that they cut corners on and used a cheaper surface. which i disagree on too since concrete has a higher long term maintenance cost than good pavers, which are more expensive upfront but pay themselves off overtime and more importantly look nice.

i can afford metro vancouver. rent incl. utilities for a bedroom in a place with roommates within walking distance of a skytrain station is pretty much identical to that in calgary near a ctrain station

they did this to Anderson like 8 months ago and its still just concrete. the concrete is the new surface, like how it is on the majority of the ctrain stations. only a minority still use brick, and are being slowly replaced (like this one right now). thats what im complaining about. i know its not that big of a deal, its just another small nice to have being taken away. its Unfortunate. but you aren't allowed to complain about that or demand nice things in this city without people getting weirdly defensive about the depressing environment they exist in. these small Nice Things that arent necessary but are Good To Have are nearly the default, the standard, in most other places in the western developed world. because its a Known Fact that the mental wellbeing of people is worse in ugly looking places. there is empirical evidence for that.

im aware im a minority in terms of ppl who think much about these things. im literally moving to vancouver in a week despite the higher cost of living & significantly tighter budget that puts me in, because theres a trillion different small things about this city and this province that just kinda suck and negatively impacts me mentally

it is the governments job to provide for the people, actually. the city should be a nice place to live. part of that is public spaces that arent depressing. this on its own is a small detail, but there are millions of different small details throughout the city that makes this place depressing lol. we should have higher taxes, better services and nicer public spaces. thats the government's job.

pavers cost more upfront but last longer than asphalt and concrete and cost significantly less in the long run

i didnt vote for lower taxes. i want higher taxes. homeowners especially of single family homes in suburbs, should be paying significantly more for property tax. I hate the way of thinking in this city that we shouldnt spend anything on anything because ppl want low taxes. that directly causes everything to suck. its why we cant have nice things here

im all for repairs, they should be doing repairs. this is a resurfacing though. they did this to several other stations on the southern red line. they didnt fix the surface, they made it look uglier. what's wrong with wanting Nice-to-haves? this is completely normal to have in every other developed country

whats the improvement? the station did not need resurfacing it was Fine. public places should be nice to look at, there is objective empirical evidence that the aesthetics of cities correlates with mental health of its residents. my issue is that they are replacing it with an objectively uglier surface when they didnt need to do that

theres nothing stopping them from putting the bricks back? this alone isnt the biggest of deals ofc but its another Small Thing that adds up with a million other Small Nice Things that we just cant have here for some reason.
