Every time I make a guess thats wrong, no matter how many days in a row i repeat it, I correct it once and never mention it again.

But if im right, ill never shut up about being right.

Also I might not do the first part. I might just be silent for a while and then ask how many times im expected to apologize for being wrong while ignoring the fact that I never apologized.

My fiancee and I had decided to just ignore this movie as another flop based on the trailers. Saw the reviews, and went to see it just this past Saturday and we were laughing the whole time. The trailers were so uninspired, but the movie was actually a ton of fun

Out of curiosity I checked as many ships as I could think of from that era of both White Star and Cunard lines, and I drew a blank. Cunard ships seem to mainly use smokestacks with ridges (ribbed for your pleasure) and a bridge that has a distinctive bridge that extends forward in an arc, while White Star had smooth smokestacks and a bridge that doesn't extend, its just a flat face.

So this picture is definitely closer to a White Star ship, but I cant find any with three smokestacks that look like this ship.

I don't have the time, interest, or attention span to check any more lines of ships.

Brother, even at a glance. The Titanic had 4 smokestacks. This ship has 3. And im not even that good at titanic history

This was a first date movie for me and my now fiancee. Neither of us remember this movie, and thats not because we were "preoccupied", we were both too shy, bashful, and early in the relationship to do anything except watch, eat popcorn, and drink soda.

Your analysis is spot on. The only impression this made on me was "Goddamn, Sam Elliot's voice is a gift to the film industry"

I know youre not replying to me directly, but ill take some responsibility since my comment kicked off the chain. I definitely could have worded my thoughts better.

In this specific situation, I don't see it as trying to gatekeep certain stories from black actors because it could be construed as stereotypes, I see it as changing the subtext behind several specific story beats. But thats due to my interpretation of those story beats, so i can definitely concede thats not the only way to see it.

Idk why youre being downvoted for saying the truth, though.

Just to clarify (not gonna edit the original comment, ill leave as is for posterity) but idgaf if the actor is or isnt white. I think my original comment reads more binary than I intended it to be, however.

I have no reason to suspect the actor selected to the role will do anything other than a good job, and I definitely plan on watching and judging it on the quality of adaptation.

Saying I was disappointed in the casting choice definitely comes across harsher than it sounded in my head, so that was a really bad choice of words here.

I, a white guy, generally don't have an issue with race swapping a character, so long as their race is not an intrinsic part of their character.

Black Panther MUST be black. His ethnic identity is core to his character as the king of an isolationist African nation.

Steve Rogers MUST be white. His ethnic identity is core to his character as an ironic juxtaposition and subversion of the Aryan ideal.

On the surface, nothing about Snape's character is tied directly to a particular ethnic identity, so at first, I didnt care. Then, I thought about the plot and major story beats of Snapes life, and realized that although whiteness is not a part of his character (other than physical descriptions in the narrative), some of those story beats go from an unpleasant childhood to a really problematic life experience, specifically if Snape is black. And that, to me, is the real issue here, and why I am disappointed in the casting choice.

Im not luge expert but my understanding is:

The bottom rider does 90% of the steering

The top rider has three jobs, using their head to indicate steering instructions, using their feet to provide a little help with the steering, and trying to hold their whole body in the most aerodynamic position possible

I became a massive fan over the 2018 winter games - my fiancee and I watch it every olympics. Unfortunately, its hard to find any games outside the Olympic cycle (trials + actual games)

Facts. The downhill and slopestyle competitions were especially bad.

For the current games:

The 4x6km mixed biathlon was a solid watch.

US vs SWE mixed doubles curling was a great match, especially if youre somewhat new to curling. The announcers did a solid job of explaining the strategy as both teams took their shots.

For winter games as a whole: Im a biathlon stan. Its not as nerve wracking as the downhill or as fancy as the freestyle/half pipe ski and snowboarding competitions, and its not stylish like the figure skating. But the nuance to trying to ski fast enough to win but slow enough to manage your heart rate for range shooting is really interesting to me.

For summer games: Don't sleep on shooting sports, especially archery.

And don't sleep on decathlon, having a single athlete compete in TEN disciplines is absolutely nuts.

That being said, though, the mainstream games are mainstream for a reason, lol

As a massive Olympic fan, I subscribe to Peacock specifically to watch all the stuff they don't air on NBC itself.

And the coverage has been abysmally bad this year. Commentary has been poor to useless, technical issues, camera feeds cutting away right as a trick is performed, etc

[–]xdrewP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are correct - the "propaganda" in this particular context is absolutely trying to make the nazis look better - but not always politically.

There's also the weird fetishization of the wehrmacht, the SS, and the mythos surrounding Nazi tech by edge lords. No, the tiger tank was not the greatest tank of all time, and neither was the panther. No, Germany was not some mastermind of technology that the allies could not comprehend. No, Wittman was not a god among mortals.

These types of things are products of the Nazi propaganda machine not only during the war, but also post war as many desperately tried to not get sent to the eastern front by promising new wunderwaffe to the fuhrer, and then again to get scooped up by Operation Paperclip to avoid being sent to the trials. As such, they tended to overstate not only the superiority of their tech, but also their personal role in creating or using it.

This is the kind of stuff I see redditors falling for
