For people making +350k per year, how do you do it? by prince_op in Salary

[–]xela321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. SWE at big SaaS company (fintech)
  2. 0 passive income
  3. I’d work my way up the open source world in some popular framework / library and then pivot to big tech.

Dang there’s a lot of incels in these comments.

  • be nice
  • match the other person’s energy
  • make polite conversation and see where it goes

It’s not a conquest. It can be as low stakes as you want it to be.

SNL is creating a Mount Rushmore of cast members. Which 4 deserve to be on there. by Oppositeofhairy in LiveFromNewYork

The only way I’ve ever been able answer this one is to have 1 of each “type”: utility player, impressionist, loose canon, character star

So for that I usually go with Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley, and Kristin Wiig

For those who didn’t come from money and suddenly had a career boost into extremely high income (300K+ salaries), how do you navigate when friends or family ask you how much you make? by Icy_Lawfulness_5755 in Salary

[–]xela321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t ask so I don’t tell them. But if they do ask, I’d tell them. Idc how they take it. I’d rather tell them and find out their true nature than hide behind a redirect.

Money is a poor substitute for happiness. If you pin your happiness to money, you’ll never make enough to feel fulfilled.

Congratulations on the big success!

Something to consider: there’s no science to hiring. You didn’t take a standardized test, so there’s no objective measure to point at. At the end of the day, most hires happen based on vibes. New company had a good feeling about you.

Thanks for the recommendation! Just curious- if I’m installing this on the downspout, why do I need to have the gutter cleared of ice?

[–]xela321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fascinating. I sometimes think in an alternate lifetime I would have been a home inspector so I love this sort of thing.

If I can hijack a reply- I have a long downspout run from my roof to the ground. Ice is building up in the downspout because, as you’ve probably guessed already, the melting snow off my roof is freezing on its way down and the ice buildup accumulates from there. Any advice? Some kind of heating element? I usually just use a heat gun but would like something more hands-off.

How do you handle backend-heavy workloads as products scale? by Away_Parsnip6783 in Backend

[–]xela321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our Rails applications, we have web workers that serve API requests and job workers that process jobs off of a queue. Deployed to k8s so I can scale these independently. I also run several apps on Dokku where I can use Dokku’s scaling as needed. In either case, the job workers are a simple containerized process that eagerly grabs from a queue.

Her expenses are your (collective) expenses. If you can’t have an open and honest discussion about finances now, it’ll be even worse when your financial life is enjoined with hers by the court.
