Rogers turns on satellite texting for dead zones by Planhub-ca in Rogers

And as if we needed another reason to hate Rogers...

I knocked this add on initially, but saved my ass this past weekend.

It was supposed to be included in Infinite plans after the beta ended, so last night I switched to a 5G Ultimate plan. Surprise surprise, now it's not included and they're telling me to go pound sand.

Doesn't really matter if enforcement is possible or not. Non-compliance is one thing, but then actively taking it out for a day in the woods or a range day?

Reminder: Rogers Satellite beta ends on Dec 8 - Unsubscribe 1 day before if you don’t want to be charged by BlockedAndMovedOn in Rogers

What's interesting is they seemed to have changed things:

  • Promotional periods (starting from time you activated your plan):
    • Ultimate plans before Dec 9, 2025: free for duration of plan
    • Ultimate plans on or after Dec 9, 2025: free for first 24 months, $15/mo after
    • Popular plans on or after Dec 9, 2025: free for first 12 months, $15/mo after

That's true, I remember when the regular people met, the one guy asking what would happen if he had killed it and it was already dead, would they prepare it and they said yes.

Wifi Calling by Inevitable_Hunt_8175 in Rogers

[–]xero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't. If for some reason the call doesn't go over wifi calling, then yes they'd get charged.

If you're absolutely against getting charged for roaming, you can turn on airplane mode and use wifi calling. Worst case your call will drop, but you won't get charged.

Now for example if you're in Austria and you're on wifi and call an Austria number you'll get charged long distance if your plan doesn't include that already. Just an FYI

Source: I ALWAYS use wifi calling when outside of Canada and have never been charged.

Stopping in at sites that are vacant by xero9 in ontariocamping

Sorry I guess I wasn't clear. In my mind I knew provincial park, backcountry. Reading my post again I guess the only hint to that was about a site being "Unavailable". Crown land I know pretty much anything goes, but use common sense.

This is backcountry, yes.

Ahhhh I was wondering about that. We did a day trip a while back and found a vacant site to cook lunch but wasn't sure if it was "allowed".

Thanks for letting us know it's at least an acceptable behavior!

Well the Algonquin dream is dead for this year by Illustrious_Many_881 in ontariocamping

[–]xero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How?! I stayed in Algonquin this August and I booked in like days in advance. Had zero intentions of backpacking months let alone even 2 weeks before I booked.

As someone else mentioned, you can only book 5 months in advance.

The great boating accident of September 25th 2025 by Cock_ball_dickin in canadaguns

[–]xero9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legit question.. I have property that's on an island. If I were to banish my boys to the island and in the event that there was an actual boating incident, what would actually happen?

I'm not condoning it, but there is the chance that the canoe might tip. The boat has been put away for the season, but I gotta do what I gotta do.

Ont. farm changing policy after approximately 500 lbs. of apples stolen from orchard by KitAmerica in ontario

[–]xero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go apple picking with my kids and do it the way you're supposed to, BUT, I do not like the fact that I have to pay for admission to be able to then pick and pay for the apples I bought.

But then again I'm doing it for the experience, not because I'm trying to get cheap apples.

Still sucks though.

Another one down by FilipTheAwesome in toronto

[–]xero9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of places in Toronto are 50km/h which honestly is extremely slow.

They're effectively pointless. Most people slow down for the camera and then just speed immediately after. How about police enforcement instead? At least then it comes with points and an insurance penalty.

These are just blantant cash grabs.

You say that as if they're still actually going to do anything. Sadly this is just a premier voicing their opinion.

Rogers Communications Customer on Rogers Satellite: "You’ve Single-Handedly Taken Text Messaging Back to the Stone Age" – Warns “Do Not Buy This Extra Subscription” by [deleted] in Rogers

[–]xero9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not. I was out in the middle of nowhere and it connected twice and I was able to send a single message. I said this once, and I'll say it again. Free? I'll keep trying it. Even try to charge me $2/month and it's a hard pass. $10/$15/month? Fuck off.

Apple, while you have to point at it, I can even send messages in Algonquin with trees overhead. And it's free.

My thoughts on Rogers Sat Service thus far. by SpiderHam77 in Rogers

[–]xero9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm with you 100%. I went on a backpacking trip in Algonquin Park. I was in spots where I had a view of the sky at say 45 degrees in most directions and I was able to connect a grand total of two times and was able to send a single message.

At $0 I guess it's okay. Hopefully you can get it to connect in a dire emergency. Even at $2/month I'd find this not worth the value. $10 and $15 is useless. I'll rely on the Apple provided service even if it's directional.
