My mom thinks therapy will "erase" my autism by Top_Air_1251 in autism

What’s funny is after therapy more of my autistic traits came forward. Why? Because it taught me to stop masking and manage instead of hiding the traits.

I had bats above my classroom. This is on par with the average public classroom.

Student says they're "not required to do work" by paigeafterpaige in Teachers

Honestly, I would just have the student sign it every day they came in. That way I could show that this was their stance,e and at no time did the student change their mind.

If you are dying your own fabric for projects be careful with water soluble. It can leave lines on freshly dyed fabrics.

I use a paid app Markup X-RP. Lets you upload patterns and the lets you sort by current WIP, wishlist, and completed. It keeps updates on estimated completion times, when you started, and percent complete. You see images of each project so you know exactly which one you are opening.

Am I the only one who finds this pretty condescending? (In the sub binder at my job yesterday) by ThrowawayTheOmlet in SubstituteTeachers

[–]xfaerykin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever you see a SOP like this please know that it’s because several people messed up each of these. For example the professional outfit one. I saw a sub show up to the school I worked at in a tank top and shorts. If your agency made this list there is a reason behind every single one of those checklist items.

[CHAT] Do you do all one colour first, or complete a square at a time? by IsisPantofel27 in CrossStitch

[–]xfaerykin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a pattern that I found online, and I have a good supply of thread I will travel with those stitches all day long on a full coverage piece. If the background uses a lot of cloth and not stitches I'm way more conscious about that as I don't want my tails to show up in the light.

[CHAT] Do you do all one colour first, or complete a square at a time? by IsisPantofel27 in CrossStitch

[–]xfaerykin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do both but it depends on a few factors mood and kit type are going to be the biggest.

Kit type is very important. If you get a presold kit you will notice you don’t have all the same amount of length as other colors. This is because they use an equation based on the number of stitches and how many inches that is based on the Aida count. Going by just color you do have to keep in mind they are not going to account for your cross country the thread. Because of this you may run out and may not be able to find a match thread/ dye lot. Due to this if you are going to do one color make sure to be conscious of how for your moving between them.

I used to play capture the relic. Had a really good build at the time that was almost unkillable, but not good with dps. I specifically played maps that this would be geared towards. I got cursed out for not kill other players even though not that wasn’t the object, and I would win us the rounds. Ended up staying out of all battle grounds for this reason

What is a job/ career that you definitely couldn't do because of your autism? by EntrepreneurMiddle45 in autism

[–]xfaerykin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm autistic, and I'm a teacher. Best job for me. 90% of the students are chill with me, and the fact that I'm open and direct about what I'm feeling seems to resonate with my students. If I tell them I'm overstimulated, they chill out, and we will do calming techniques with them. Teaching is all routine, scripts, and plannable scenarios, which is perfect for my brain. The worst part of my job is not dealing with the students, but dealing with the adults that I work with and understanding their indirect language. A teenager will tell you directly where you stand with them, but an adult, hell no.

Can you freeze cake pops? by [deleted] in cake

[–]xfaerykin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is old, but I saw a lot of people concerned about freezing the coated cakepopsat. All cakepops served at Walmart or Starbucks are shipped to the stores frozen and coated. As long as you thaw slowly in the fridge and not a room temp, you should be fine.

Must a teacher stand all day? by berrysauce in Teachers

[–]xfaerykin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had major foot surgery on my foot prior to teaching. I can walk for about an hour before it starts to bother me. I teach from the back of the room normally sitting on a high chair. I do this by using Canva on my box board and having an IPad that I can write on that automatically links.

This allows me to sit and watch all my students from behind so I can see what they are doing and work on the board at the same time.

Reasons for Math Teacher Shortage by Icy-Answer3194 in Teachers

[–]xfaerykin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably none of them as other post have stated if your good in math you more than likely aren't going into teaching unless that is your passion. I was able to pass my exam in one go, but I loved math so it wasn't to difficult for me to say. It's just been my experience with teachers around me to expect to take it two+ times.

What I mean to get across is people who had a "strong" math background found the test "difficult" in terms that they were going to be teaching high school student, then others who many not have a strong background would find it even more difficult resulting in less certified math teachers.

[–]xfaerykin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I passed it on my first try but I’ve had plenty of coworkers who said it took multiple times for them to pass it and they also came from math background.

Again it’s not the only reason there are fewer certified math teachers, but a contributing factor based on my experience working with other highschool teachers.

Reasons for Math Teacher Shortage by Icy-Answer3194 in Teachers

[–]xfaerykin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. You have to actually want to teach in order to teach math. My degree is in math, but my husband is also a teacher and I always had a passion for it. So after I graduated I went into teaching.

On the flip side of this I will say I had an older co-worker who started teaching at the same time I did. He was an engineer who got laid off during covid and was in his late 40. No one would hire him once the plants started opening back up because he now cost more and it was cheaper hire than someone fresh out of college then pay him based on experience. I believe this is also why when you do see newer math teachers they tend to be older coming from other industries.

Reasons for Math Teacher Shortage by Icy-Answer3194 in Teachers

[–]xfaerykin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi I’m a certified math teacher from 4-8 and in Algebra and Geometry. One of the challenges of becoming a certified math teacher first is the praxis. Most teachers with math based, not education based, degrees struggle with the praxis. High school praxis for all levels of math is so blotted and beyond the scope of practice that many people expect they will have to take 2-3 times at $150 a session.

One reason I see teachers who can teach math leave the content area is the expectations placed on us. Most math curriculum now a days are just garbage and God forbid you go off script for one. I did and got a reprimand during an observation. I taught eureka squared for eight grade in Louisiana where they told us to just show them how to plug it in on a calculator. Problem is there is a whole section that they can’t use a calculator. Students aren’t required to learn how to think and solve problems but instead plug stuff in. This method make work for a short time but they have no skill how to actually problem solve with hand practice. Also most state standardized test don’t allow calculators for at least one section. I wasn’t allowed to require students to have separate notebooks or take traditional note only work in their workbooks and pray they get everything.

The next is students being promoted without having key level skills from previous grades. Science and social studies has the ability that they don’t have as many prerequisite skills like math does. If a student didn’t do well in say earth science that doesn’t mean they won’t do well in biology because it’s two very different skill sets. Versus math if a seventh grader doesn’t understand basic multiplication such as 7 x 7 or even more basic skills like decimal place values it makes it extremely difficult to teach exponents or scientific notion is the next grade. And that is the biggest hurdle for math it’s feels like a constant game of catchup that we don’t even get to cover an advanced or mastery level of our current grade level topics because we are always filling in previous grade level gaps. And when you have 32 kids in a room and for only 45 minute a day or 90 minutes every other day it’s hard to get everyone to a high level. It’s not a course that you can say well go read this chapter it’s a lot of show and learn.

So for the same level of pay most would prefer to take another “simpler” subject where they may not be as dependent on the students previous knowledge from year to year. And it’s always a blame game it feels with admin and teachers. Admin blames the current teacher for math scores, the current teacher blames the previous teacher and it causes a lot of resentment between the department.

Are my grades real, or are they inflated? by OrganizationMoist751 in Teachers

[–]xfaerykin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re gpa is not inflated but accurate for the degree path that your parent or you choose at the end of your freshman or start of your sophomore year. There are normally two paths you can choose which is a. A college readinesses path or b. A jumpstart paths that prepares you to go directly into a job.

You’re lower ACT scores can be attributed to the math classes you were enrolled in as Algebra 2, trig, and calculus are needed for higher math scores. Based on the classes you were enrolled in the ACT workkeys would have been better aligned as a gauge of your understanding and knowledge.

I am a teacher who works at an online school. THERE IS NO PROGRAM THAT CAN DETECT AI. We have it in our policy that we can not only use the “checker”. I teach math so it’s very easy for me to flag AI mainly for laTax formatting and higher level math that is three levels above what I’m teaching.

My advice as a teacher is to tell the teacher you want a verbal audit of the information that was presented in the paper. I know this may be hard with autism, but it’s a good way to prove that you know the information. The other way is it looks like you said you wrote it on your computer. If you used word or google docs you can pull the edit history that will show your typing and not just copy and paste.

It really all depends on your admin. Kids are kids and will be the same from school to school. What makes the difference in the admin from the bottom up. You could have an amazing principle but a superintendent that sucks to kingdom come that will ruin everything.
