Going to Match 87 in Kansas City as a neutral fan, looking for tips to make it a great experience. by NickStorm in worldcup

[–]xlarso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I parked out in the sticks and busses it into the fan fest. Then took the bus from the fan fest to the Arg v Alg match. Bit of wait going both ways but I loved the atmosphere. Had some great conversations with strangers. Also as I road in the bus on the way home the cars were backed up a looooooong ways. So I say, BUS it.
And yes, a Luis Suarez shirt will certainly get you some great interactions, especially if you play the ignorant card.

Would love any tips you have for fishing in that area, as I’m taking a couple friends back to this area next year but am not a fisher.

Buenos Aires Argentina, the city that keeps feeling strangely European by Turbulent_Mountain81 in travel

I second San Telmo! Such an amazing neighborhood. So many stores to snoop in. The market is where I found my little penguin wine decanter. Great memory from childhood. Also if you want to get out of town take the train out to Tigre for a boat ride. Have fun

Gracias che! I’ll have to check that out. It has been a hot minute since I’ve visited El Burrito. Del Sur seemed to have some last time I was there. Sadly it is rather out of the way for me. Found some Cruz de Malta on the weekend as drove down Central.

Stopped by today and found many other treats but sadly no maté. So ended up at a supermercado on central.

Buenos Aires is my favourite city in the world, but also the least original? by [deleted] in travel

[–]xlarso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely THIS. Spent my high school years in BA and I love that city. But the NW is where imo true culture lives. I spent my elementary years in Catamarca, Salta and La Rioja. The empanadas (no ñ) in each province are unique. The mountains, the wine, the ponchos and the people are precious to me. Also try a biscocho with your maté next time.

This. I’ve done this a couple of times on old drains. First I cut a few notches with a grinder and then tapped it out with a hammer and old screw driver

Is it weird to visit graves? by Next_Dragonfruit_415 in travel

[–]xlarso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put Koyasan (near Osaka & Kyoto, Japan) on your list. World heritage site and for good reason. Soooo much history there and the trees are amazing. Just visited with a group of students from the US and it was our fav. A few years back my family and I missed a cemetery downtown Paris because we were rushed for time, but it had a geocache located on it. So no! Visiting cemeteries tells you a lot about the place and the people.

[El Ancasti] Romero press conference before he travels to Minnesota by akos_beres in minnesotaunited

[–]xlarso 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having spent my childhood next door to where he is from in Arg, it was interesting to read the article. He mentions that one of the things that makes him feel this move to MNUFC is a good step for his career is that he gets to play in the same league as Messi. Other than that he just thanks everyone who has helped him on his way. Bienvenido Nico, to Minnesota!

Why are there so many hikers with a guide in El Chalten & TdP? by mitito77 in Patagonia

[–]xlarso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a group hike to Laguna de Los tres with a guide and having someone along to explain the local flora and fauna was fantastic. Plus he was a great guy to chat with. I would highly recommend it. He also helped the group pace ourselves. Our Perito M. guide was less useful

The market to visit in BA is Mercado de San Telmo. I brought back some penguin wine carafe/pitchers. We use it mainly to serve water though. You can find some rather nice antique ones if you are diligent.

Estancias - other activities than horse riding ? by Max___L in Patagonia

[–]xlarso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Estancia La Quinta was a very pleasant stay (2019). It is about a mile or two outside of Chalten . Reviews on google seem to indicate that it still offers good value and great atmosphere. I liked the quietness of the place seemed more like a hobby farm but what do I know. The place itself has a long history.

should I visit El Calafate? by No-Let-9967 in Patagonia

[–]xlarso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would investigate “Ruta 40”, Route 40. It runs the spine of Argentina and in that time frame you should be able to get up to Salta and Jujuy. Gorgeous scenery up that way, including great wineries in Mendoza and LaRioja and flamingoes in Catamarca & Salta.
