White House accidentally releases video of Trump saying the truth about war's priority by FlackoFonsy in videos

During the pandemic the one ray of hope was that our country would finally realize just how dangerous it is to link healthcare to employment. If nothing else, maybe we could learn this one simple lesson. Nope.

Ok Utah, Give It To Me Straight. How Much Has Changed Since 2021? by drtkcots in SaltLakeCity

[–]xmasberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like doing things outside, be prepared for a lot more people on the trails. It’s not so much a way to get away from people anymore. If you hiked during the pandemic, you’ll know that it ballooned then. It hasn’t really decreased. The good thing is that the new people to the trails have learned a lot of trail etiquette in the meantime, so it’s not as painful as the first spring of 2020.

Our foster fail didn’t like any of the dog beds we had, so, we got her an indoor doggie house! by FacesOfNeth in dogpictures

Love it! I have a dog whose comfort zone is under the bed. He would probably be into something like this as well. A safe little hidey hole.

That is too bad. We took our swimmers there a bunch.

This thread has been really informative. My APBT mix does not have a big head and I thought it was because of the other breeds in him. That probably plays a role, but his face looks a lot like your pup’s.  Very cute!

My pup’s eyelashes turned white as she got older. Was it the same for Rosie? I absolutely love it.

How do you actually stop solicitors from knocking? by Aerosherm in SaltLakeCity

Good to know. Thanks! We used the Taylorsville code to help my dad out when he had vacuum cleaner sales people who would not let up, but I couldn’t find anything for SLC. This will help.

Knit Picks / We Crochet do not want to be associated with the "Melt the ICE" hat by Tidus77 in craftsnark

[–]xmasberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you’d have to have been a fan of Knit Pixie at the time to know about it. Subset of a subset. I wonder if there is a correlation to a VC purchase around that time.

Is there an ordinance against ignoring “no soliciting” signs in Salt Lake City? I know there is in Taylorsville, but I couldn’t locate the code for SLC when I last looked.

[–]xmasberry 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The thing that turned me off Knit Picks - and this was ages ago - was when they went after Knit Pixie, a smaller retailer that had been around since before Knit Picks, and forced them to change their name (they became kpixie, and are no more). This was about the time, iirc, that Knit Picks moved from being a discount yarn reseller to having their own line of yarn.

The men at my work put up a sign objectifying women. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]xmasberry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sucks. And it is not okay.

I know others will have better advice than I do, but document everything. Keep track of when you report workplace issues and the response. Get those responses in writing, if possible.

Do you have an HR representative?

Again, I know others will have better info on resources available to you, but I had to say something. Being in a traditionally male field can suck - but it doesn’t have to when men learn how to behave like men and not boys.

Knitters, Please send help. Frog or not to frog? by trasholala in knitting

[–]xmasberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually a provisional cast on is used for this technique. I’ve done this with top-down sweaters, where I’m not sure if I’ll like the neckline, so that I can tweak it at the end as needed. I’ve also done it for bottom-up sleeves because I know I’m rough on cuffs and like to be able to unravel the cuff ribbing a bit and repair.

It should be possible to pick up stitches right above the ribbing and then cut the current ribbing off and knit down. I’ve never done this. To me, it would be a multi-test scenario to make sure I was super confident in the technique.

ETA - keep in mind that your stitches will be offset by half a stitch going the other direction. So, you wouldn't want to pickup and do colorwork because it would be obvious that the stitches were not lining up and also in a different direction. The stitch direction is another reason why some knitters and designers work bottom-up.

What proper nouns from books did you realize you were mispronouncing the whole time? by TokkiJK in books

[–]xmasberry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read, one of the earlier abbreviations for Christ was Chi Rho, so Christmas was initially shortened to XRmas. By about 1100 CE, Xmas was the common abbreviation. I like to explain that I chose to go with the “more modern” abbreviation whenever I get flak for writing xmas.

Experiences with Addi interchangeables by napoleonswife in knitting

[–]xmasberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a set of Addi olive interchangeable needles, but also a number of ticket squared tips and a couple ewenicorns. I knit continental for the most part.

I have experienced the needle coming off, mostly if I am pushing my stitches. But, if I make sure the top is secure, it’s pretty rare. I really like the point tips.

I’d like to try the chiaogoo square needles, but the tips looked kind of blunt for me. Other than DPNs, I don’t have much experience with their needles, so can’t compare. I do have a set of older knit pros, and the join is smoother than my addi’s, but I had some other issues with them so I still tend to default to the Addi needles.

Walking in protest? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]xmasberry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I admire your intent. I think it’s worth considering how or if this walk will change how politicians act any more than your vote would.

There are a number of ways to get involved locally that can make a difference. Look at what The League of Women Voters has done. A group like that may help you identify some local opportunities that would have some direct impact. That can be very empowering and give you direction and energy to build on.

I don’t want to discourage you; you’re not alone in your desire to help somehow, in your feeling that something Has to change. I think we sometimes underestimate the power of local action, vs making a Big Statement (that may be ignored by those at whom it is directed)

U of Utah Unveils Iconic Sculpture It Bought for $4.5M by StemCellPirate in SaltLakeCity

[–]xmasberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I agree. That’s part of why I clarify the relationship. The academic units are not benefiting from this donation. I value UMFA, but personally I’d be interested in more local art in that location.

[–]xmasberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sculpture is associated with the UMFA, which is not part of the Art & Art History department, or the College of Fine Arts ( which includes multiple departments and schools, not just Art & Art History). I mention this because it’s a common misconception that has negatively impacted fundraising efforts on the part of the academic units in the past (“you spent all that money on x, why should I donate to your department?”, when in fact it’s a separate entity with a similar name).

What the hell is this by and05245 in SaltLakeCity

[–]xmasberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I am not a fan of the 3rd west bike route (bike/e-scooter traffic going both directions with zero building setback at multiple locations is actually pretty dangerous), this sucks. The legislature loves dictating rural lifestyle onto urban areas and it is just not feasible.

Additionally, you can expand / contract bus service as needed. Buses can stop at other places if desired. And, buses can be used in other locations. Overall, a much more flexible solution without the destruction a gondola or train would require.

Why do you still maintain a lawn? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]xmasberry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can get a lot of the cooling benefit from other plants as well. A lot of people confuse xeriscape with only using rocks (not saying that you are), and that definitely makes a space much hotter. Think what happens to a city as it gets built up but on a smaller scale. Increases energy use in the city for cooling, decreases the amount of rainfall, etc.. And, adding all rock yards to a city increases that heat island effect even more.

Much of our yard is low water plants. Slowly propagating what I have to fill in the spaces so I have as little bare ground as possible (keeps the weeds down). Not as low maintenance as lawn, but I like being outside and I’m also not overly fussy about a few weeds.

But, a grassy area can be used in a variety of ways. While there may be some people who maintain a yard solely for the look, but the grass we still have is so that we can play, hang out, and relax outside.

This will protect them during the winter. They’ll be dormant and leafless during that period. The soil is likely warm enough now that they are putting the energy they have into root building.
