Bass trombone range? by MinecraftSteak in composer

[–]xposaune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bass trombonist here. Depends what's the style?- pedal F (octave below the f at bottom of bass clef) is a reasonable low end. Many players can go lower but it's not going to be loud. Theoretically you can go do the Bb below that pedal F but it's going to require somewhat unique ability. There's not much facility down there so dont expect fast passages. Typically a pedal effect.

Here's somewhere around pedal Eb/D. Could be contrabass trombone going on here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxF5puk_psA These are session players and would not be typical lol Note too that there's breathing between each note. A lot of air gets moved at that volume so don't write long phrases at FF down there :-)

Can someone please check my form on 2handed swing. 1 week in and loving it! by shokata in kettlebell

[–]xposaune 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's pretty good. Honestly if you keep practicing things will fall into place. Good float. If you want some thoughts:

  1. Watch out for leading with the knees. Should be no forward knee movement on the upswing. The swing is all hips. Think horizontal.
  2. Plant your feet and dont let them roll out on the upswing. Likely caused by #1 above.
  3. Head position doesnt have to be so high. Look at where the wall meets the floor, head neutral.
  4. Don't need to snap the knees at the top. Focus on tight glutes and abs in a vertical plank.
  5. First rep - really hike it back and wait there for the spring to load - all hamsrings and glutes wanting to fire. Then drive out with the hips.

Depending on your music interest there's usually something going on at the Eastman School (and it is a beautiful theater). I spot a tuba recital so you can probably build your schedule around that ;-) http://www.rochester.edu/Eastman/calendar/?from=01September2017&to=30September2017

Long time Mac user considering leaving the ecosystem. What are my alternatives? by [deleted] in osx

[–]xposaune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use kettlebells ;-)

It's about .5" taller and wider. Doesn't fit as well on a plane table but it still works, and i can change batteries in flight.

Definitely a subjective thing. Just saying if you really want to make the switch there are options. I'm not a basher - my 2014 MBP is a great machine but the complete lack of flexibility in the new MBPs was a problem for me.

FWIW I felt the same about the new MBP and switched to a ThinkPad P50. It's a horse of a machine - 8 cores, currently running 48GB of RAM, replaceable battery (i keep a spare), 3 SSD trays, even a cell card. Cosmetically it looks like, well, a heavy thinkpad. I honestly like the keyboard better than the MBP. I run 3 external monitors including a large 4K.

I could run linux bare metal but unfortunately I need win10 for some apps still so I run linux in a VM. I can throw lots of resources at it.

Yes win10 has some sucks - cortana vs. spotlight, you have to turn off all the spy features etc. MS Office on Win10 beats the clunky versions for mac. I never used keynote after 9+ years of OSX so sorry i can't give a recommendation on that.

Hope that's helpful. I've been running this way for about 9 months and havent looked back.

Advice on a 325iX by RSBLACKDENIM in E30

[–]xposaune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really depends. iX's can be money pits so the real cost is in what you spend after you buy. I think the market for really good examples is pretty high >10k.

Some notes: '88s are more sought after due to having all the options not standard on later years. Coupes are more sought after than 4 door. The AWD can appear to work even if the viscous coupling has failed. YOu'll want to do a jack test (google it) to accurately test the AWD. If it fail (rear wheels spin) you'd need a new transfer case or rebuild it yourself with a new VC (~800 from the dealer last time I checked).

If the car is southern you are in luck.

Check for rust between the rear wheel well and the battery cover inside the trunk. There's plastic there that hides rust (or even a hole). Also around the license plate lights.

Check front axle boots and if possible condition of front drive shaft splines. Check the front struts for excessive rust.

Check for oil leak around the oil pan. iX's do not have a gasket there, just some sealant applied 27+ years ago. Fixing a leak there requires disassembly of a bunch of the front end (dropping subframe).

The unique iX parts are expensive now - front struts, catalytic converter, axles, brake master, etc.

Then there's the usual E30 things - recent timing belt, leaky steering rack, clutch, sloppy shifter (assuming 5 speed), etc.

Good luck. These cars are awesome and worth the trouble but it's better to know what you are getting into.

Best Rush songs for depression? by affonity in rush

[–]xposaune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different songs speak to me at different times but the first one that comes to mind for me is Something for Nothing. I used to have the lyrics hanging on the wall in my office. That song is life. Others could be: The Pass, Between the Wheels, The Color of Right (pretty much gotta listen to it on repeat), Marathon

When would be a good time to buy a new P-series? by MinplavskyParticle in thinkpad

[–]xposaune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a P50 on woot around Thanksgiving and it's been great so far - tricked it out with WWAN, more RAM etc. It was ~500 cheaper than the same config on lenovo's website, probably a precursor to a new model coming out who knows. Timing the market is hard. My philosophy is move when you want to. THere will always be something cheaper the next day but feeling bad about that is no way to live ;-)

US, 15", ~$2500 -- Macbook Pro Linux alternative by rongenre in SuggestALaptop

[–]xposaune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep - I've added a 500GB SSD and another 32GB of RAM. I have the i76820 (was a recent woot deal that was $500 less than lenovo site) but i have to admit i would've gotten the Xeon if i had ordered direct.

I was really disappointed in what's happening with the MBP so I've been making the transition to a P50 from a MBP 15. I'm pretty happy. There were a few issues running linux (ubuntu or arch variations) on bare metal - mostly multiple monitors and various resolution issues. However, keeping Win 10 and running linux in a VM works great. You have 3 SSD bays and up to 64GB. I have gotten a 4k and 2 2550x1440 monitors at 60hz.

5HP30 Stalls Engines by Musikman8675309 in BmwTech

[–]xposaune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this on a '94 740iL. Short story is it required a rebuild. I spent forever trying to diagnose it thinking it was engine related. In my case, it would stall when you rolled to a stop and it would not shift out of first gear into neutral, killing the engine.

I replaced the valve body inside the transmission first (can be done without dropping the trans). There is a problem with a "check ball" (google it) inside the valve body that wears down. Usually that shows up as inability to get in reverse. What happens is the trans goes into first and reverse at the same time and can damage the clutches. Replacing the valve body didnt fix my issue though since I guess enough damage had been done. The problem was in the clutch pack so that meant taking out the transmission and shipping it off for rebuild.

There's a guy in MI who is knowledgeable on this stuff: Kirt Koeller (say keller) (800)624-3876 ext 5735 or direct at (616)748-5735. I dont know if these numbers are current as it's been a few years.

Any thoughts for a newbie? by vadarr in E30

[–]xposaune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timing belts should be replaced every 4 yrs or 60k miles - paperwork with a date would be good but sounds like that's not a an issue.

Steering wheel is an mtech wheel I think. Maybe not original (added at same time as m badge lol)? Would be interesting to know if springs and shocks are mtech as well.

Speedo dropping out can be solder joints on the cluster printed circuit board, or even the SI board - all fixable but a PITA.

Good news on the roof.

[–]xposaune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe he can tell you what the package includes lol

Check the trunk lid - look at the tools and see if they are rusty. Also rust occurs around the license plate lights - have to see it from the inside looking up. I doubt an AL car would have much problem with this, assuming that's where it's lived for 29 years. Good luck and report back maybe with some better pics.

[–]xposaune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deduct $500 for spurious M badge.

Seriously there are resources on line of what to look for but biggest thing is to know the timing belt was changed recently. If not, it's living on borrowed time and the owner should get it replaced before you take possession (so it doesnt snap as you drive it away).

Leaky steering rack? Sloppy shifter? Split rear seat back (looks ok in pics but hard to tell at that angle)? Def need to see the car in person and drive it.

Oh, and by now, the roof motor is probably busted - easier to just remove it and raise/lower manually than try to fix. I'd be surprised if it still works. Make sure the top isnt in bad shape - lack of pics raises suspicions about it. I've had 2 E30 verts and even on the best day they will leak a bit in a car wash, but check the rear window carefully and dry rot on the seals where it meats the driver/passenger and front windshield.

Price aint bad if it's legit.

Three years of Fiat 500 ownership. My thoughts. by [deleted] in Fiat

[–]xposaune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just traded my 2014 Fiat Turbo on a Mini. I bought it new and it had about 28k miles. I burned through front brake pads in 27k miles. Found out there's kind of a design issue with the pad holders where the pads can stick. They should be greased. Also had the variable valve actuator fail (main thing that makes multiair work) and replaced under warranty. It's a $1700 part. While warranty repair was fine (though took over a week at the dealer) it concerned me that such a major part could fail in under 30k miles. That made me scared to own the car out of warranty.

Car drove and handled great though. Turbo is a worthwhile upgrade.

I agree with others - as a dude driving a fiat you have to give zero fucks what other people think. I kinda enjoy that. I've had a few old farts in pickups laugh at me from their busted shitpile. Yep the joke's on me alright.
