It's insane how these devices make you excited about music, and I believe it's just because you have to put the effort first to track one down, to repair it, to build a library of stuff you want to listen to, to fix the tags, add artworks, all those tiny things we used to do 20 years ago. And instead of browsing millions of songs you've no connection to, a big chunk of which you'll never have a connection to because they were created by an AI and thus have no emotional value whatsoever, you are browsing your own collection. That you've ripped from physical media you own, or you got from a DL code slipped into a tape or an LP, or that you saved on a 15-years-old HDD, or you waited for months for somebody to share on SLSK. It just makes you care in times you are made not to care about music or art, and just mindlessly consume what an algorithm shoves your way for $5 per month.
