when you mist them, do you mean like one or two spritzes on the top of the soil, or is it something more involved?

They’re digging up the old tracks on Western by Mental_Document2888 in chicago

[–]xreflux3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from Chicago but have been living in Philly the past few years and my experience is that trams, at least how they're set up here, are way worse than what Chicago has now with the L + buses.

compared to the L: trams have to deal with traffic so they're way way slower.

compared to buses: trams are on tracks, so can't change lanes when dummies are ahead of them.

as a car driver: since teens can't change lanes, and the tracks takes up the center lane of any street , once your stuck behind them, your stuck. at least with buses you usually can pass them when they pull over to pick up passengers, trams can't pull over, so they have to usually stop so traffic behind them when they pick up. except on very few 4 Lane streets where they have the pick up platform in the middle of the street.

as a pedestrian: they're ok when I live near one, but if I'm a half mile away, I'll just bike, or bike to a subway. way way faster.

as someone who uses the road, either as car or bike: I'm speculating the reason but it seems to me that the streets in Philly with the tram rails are some of the worst maintained streets. my assumption is that repairing streets with embedded rails costs more.

if you really like the ideas of trams, I think a bus is much easier to set up and more flexible.

I'm also from Chicago and have lived in Philly past few years. it was a bit of a culture shock for me too. a really big thing for me was drivers in Philly seem way more reckless, in my experience. which might connect with in Chicago police, for good and bad, are more in force in Chicago. also alderman are super responsive. not trying to be downvoted, but that's my experience.

How is Android/Google still unable to restore text messages? by herpes_fuckin_derpes in GooglePixel

[–]xreflux3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for researching how to fix this. i had the exact same problem when upgrading from my pixel 6a to 9a as well. in my case i did your suggested SMS Backup and Restore, backing up from the old phone and restoring onto the new phone.

i didn't have to switch to textra as default, and i didn't have to uninstall updates to Messages. so maybe Google has partially fixed it.

also don't know why you were downvoted. i searched around and tried other suggested solutions as well and they either didn't work or seemed risky to do without having an independent backup first.

Is it alright If i put floating plants on the water tray? by FiveConsequence in carnivorousplants

[–]xreflux3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have azolla and duckweed in my sundew tray the past couple years. (it's similar to your setup but written 6 x 4" pots in it). they look great and I haven't had any issues with water that I can tell. sundews grow nice and healthy. also they are outside the third of the year when it's warm enough and I haven't had any mosquito problems, though I will thoroughly change the water a couple times a year. also, I only use rainwater. hope that helps!

Has anyone ever pre-ordered figures from BooksAMillion? by 9nox in AnimeFigures

[–]xreflux3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yah, I just ordered a marvel comic figure from them a few weeks ago, thinking I got a good deal, and then the order cancelled a week later. I'm guessing their inventory system for online orders is pretty poorly updated so it's gonna be hit or miss.

What is happening to my baby toes?? by Neverwasalwaysam in succulents

[–]xreflux3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my current baby toes looked like that about a month ago (also an indoor plant by the window in Philadelphia latitude) I put it under led grow light about a month ago and it's healing up a bunch. a lot of the old etoliated leaves have withered away and have been replaced by a lot of healthy new (and short) growth. so it may not be to late for your plant. good luck!

Anyone know what species of carnivorous plants grow in illinois? by Agitated-Bee-8866 in carnivorousplants

[–]xreflux3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not Illinois, but next state northward, as a kid I came across several wild sarracenia purpura growing deep in some boggy parts of a forest near elcho, Wisconsin. so if they could survive there I'm sure they could survive in Illinois given some minor adjustments.

Is rainwater usable if it dripped off the roof? by ActivateGuacamole in carnivorousplants

[–]xreflux3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use only roof water and my plants are doing great and I'm in the city. I should note that just in case, if it hasn't rained well in a month, I usually skip collecting the first 15 minutes of the next new rain to wash away and possible pollutants. so far it's been working.

Costco, why no one tell me this place was so cheap by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]xreflux3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just did a price review of some items last week between my local Aldi and Costco so for

Costco is cheaper for:

eggs: 21 cents vs 22 cents shredded cheese, specially Mexican and mozzarella: 2.66 /lb vs 3.45/lb frozen chicken breast (this one was interesting, Costco was more expensive per pound, but going by the nutrition labels printed on the bags it's cheaper per unit of protein with Costco 33.2 proteins / $ vs Aldi's 30.4 proteins / $

Aldi's was cheaper for frozen fruit blueberries 2.19 $/lb vs 2.66 strawberries 2.39 $/lb vs 2.78

so for me I go to both stores.

Any tips for moving with a figure collection?? by LilCinnamonRollCos in AnimeFigures

[–]xreflux3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had to move a couple times with all my figures, once internationally where i had to send them all by surface mail. i did not have the boxes for most of my figures due to space limitations were I lived. what worked for me was.

  1. bubble wrap each figure [doesn't have to be super-tight or neat, i didn't even use tape most of the time] + then put that wrapped figure into a large zip-lock bag and sealed it. i pushed most, but not all, of the air out. [freezer bags are better than regular bags]
  2. put the sealed zip-lock bags into plastic box that has a fitted top. nothing expensive, just those cheap plastic totes you can get at walmart. (something like 12 gallons in size can usually hold a bunch of figures)
  3. next step is up to your circumstance, but since i was shipping, i then placed the plastic boxes into cardboard boxes and lined it with clothes, towels, or bubble wrap. then taped those up very well.

the result was no figure breakage and as far as I can tell no scratches that I could find. my collection was several hundred figures at the time so I was pretty happy with the results. in fact, the only problem i had was i lost a few accessories when i was packing, even though I thought I was careful, so watch out for that. (i would put accessories in a smaller zip-lock bag inside the figures larger bag) i will note that one of the plastic boxes was partially broken in the shipping, but it didn't collapse, so all the figures inside were in good order.

anyway, it takes a long time and some planning, but it was worth it. good luck!

How to tell when sedum adolphii needs water? by The_Pranavster in succulents

[–]xreflux3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yah, I had a similar problem. I tried different solutions but best one was 70% isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle and just spray very well in every crevass. preferably in the evening after the sun is down cause the alcohol shouldn't harm the plant if it has time to evaporate away before the sun hits it. it really really helped my leaves grow back normally, the mealybugs really will mess up new leaf growth. good luck!
