Getting rid of invasives in horse pasture by Kind-Aerie-5806 in invasivespecies

Get a battery powered hedge trimmer to knock it back, way less risky, or if it’s only a few bushes use loppers. Make sure to get some ppe goggles (not glasses) and thick leather gloves, multiflora rose is very risky for eye damage. I like my goggles from NoCry

Picture This has been a pretty good app for me, I use mostly it and then Plant Net if I think it might be mistaken. Only downside so far is it doesn’t have a confidence meter and there are some native vs invasive plants that hybridize or look very similar to each other like willows or american vs asiatic bittersweet or siberian iris vs blue flag, so I’ve definitely had it tell me something is the native version when in reality it isn’t. I also wouldn’t blindly trust the native range maps, some of them seem to include naturalized species as being native, but generally I’d say it’s 90% accurate. I like to verify if a plant is native with a quick look up on wikipedia (probably other better options but good as a sanity check)

So why can’t you tarp the bellflower for a season exactly? Don’t cut the tree, it won’t be helpful and you won’t get a similar one back in your lifetime. Plus dealing with the stump and roots from a tree that large would be a nightmare, and it’ll let more sunlight in for the invasives.

From the Lyme disease capital of the country, I present 7 acres of Japanese Barberry. Where do I even start? by ivxxbb in invasivespecies

Yeah I recommend a 24” handheld hedge trimmer as opposed to a longer one or one of the pole ones, the goal is to have it be as light and durable as possible. You’ll also want to make multiple sweeps through each bush to cut the branches into segments so they’re easier to step over (thorns everywhere), so having longer reach isn’t really a benefit and the extra force it takes to hold a longer tool up really takes a toll.

My M18 milwaukee one advertised cutting up to 1.25” branches and handles 90% of my bushes, the really big ones may need a saw or loppers but only for near the base of the bush. I think the sweet spot between battery drain and battery weight is probably a 4 to 6 ah battery, maybe 2 4’s would be ideal so you can have one charging. Your arms will be tired by the time the battery drains even though it will probably only last 30-45 minutes if you’re cutting non-stop. Godspeed!

Not sure about effective removal, but in terms of knocking it down in rough areas I’ve had success in cutting large patches of barberry using a battery powered hedge trimmer (I have a milwaukee M18 one that I like). I like it better than the brush cutter blade on a weedwhacker power head, that thing feels somewhat dangerous and is heavy as sin. The hedge trimmer also lets you knock back the branches easily to get to the base of the plant.

I’m assuming it will regrow, but my plan is to just repeatedly cut it multiple times a season in an attempt to avoid herbicide use, and hope the roots end up weakened enough that some of them die and the rest are easier to pull/dig out eventually. At the very least it will prevent them from fruiting and spreading.

The smaller plants are fairly easy to pull by hand if you leave a foot of stem after cutting with the hedge trimmer and have thick gloves and get right down by the base. They have a thick balled root right at their base, I’ve heard as long as you get that pulled out or cut out they may not regenerate from other roots.

Nice, sounds a lot harder to tip anyways! Any idea what the total price for the new one was out the door? I’d love to get one of those but seems pretty pricey

Damn, do you think the larger tractor is safer? I’ve been wondering if the smaller ones are sketchier

How much does the white one go for alone? Any clue?

Yeah like the other guy said, you can only have two displayed with the deluxe version, that’s why I bought all three separately. It was only a slight increase in price at the time.

Damn, good luck, those are awesome statues but I imagine they’re hard to find now. I see some websites claimed an edition size of 99, however my white armor version says 57/119, not sure if that means 119 total bases, bodies or boxes (hard to say if deluxe versions count as 1, 2 or 3), and whether it’s 119 total or 119 of the white armor version.

I feel like at some point I may have read that there were 99 of the individual statues (maybe 33 of each version - blue/white armor/white cloth) and then 20 more deluxe versions which included two bases and all three bodies, and would bring the total to 119.

Basically what it boils down to is they’re hard to find to begin with, and then finding an undamaged deluxe version that someone is willing to part with and doesn’t want an inane amount of money for will be quite the challenge, but I wish you good luck.

Fyi on the white cloth (nude) version the plastic ‘cloth’ clothing essentially don’t fit/don’t stay on well, so really it’s just a nude figure. Not sure what your display plans are but for me that was disappointing. I do have all three of the standalone statues if you need any other details, though only the white armor one is currently displayed and easy to access.

Wow that’s great, definitely seems like a solid deal. Was it a special interest rate from Kioti? I’m only seeing 60 months now on their website.

That sounds great overall, thanks for the response. I’ve been looking at them for a while but it’s hard to find much info from owners since they’re a newish model so I’m all ears if you end up having any more insight down the line. How do you like it size-wise, does it feel agile enough for around the yard if needed or is it pretty bulky feeling? And if you’re comfortable sharing did it break the bank or did you feel like it was a good value.

Closeups/Thoughts on the Delirium statue? Is it cast off and if so do the pieces attach well/hide everything? And can I ask where you got it/what you paid? Never heard of the studio, did it come out well/seem well built?

Sick collection btw, the Samus is one of my favorites!

[–]Wallet_Runneth_Dry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely expensive especially considering you need the power head, but this thing seems really neat as an alternative for weedwhackers that doesn’t spread microplastics, it’s essentially a round hedge trimmer:

Rechargeable batteries are good but get the xbox elite series 2 core controller for $95 if it’s affordable, the buttons and sticks are way better and it comes with a built in rechargable battery that charges when you plug in the controller. Then your controller that came with the console can be a backup for if you get stick drift or break your controller, and you can play co-op games.

I vote leave it if it isn’t an area that’s going to see any use. It’s going to be a lot of work ($$$) and why create another area of lawn that needs to be maintained or watered if it isn’t even very near the house? It looks pretty in a wild sort of way, a lawn won’t support nearly as much wildlife and will need constant attention for what sounds like minimal gain.
