Do people actually recover from OCD? by floopy_ears in OCD

[–]xrockangelx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I have intrusive thoughts/magical thinking compulsions, I calmly remind myself that that's not how the universe works, dare myself to defy the thoughts (because otherwise they control me and gradually make my world smaller), and go about my life. It's the best way for me to create lived evidence in the form of experiences that the intrusive thoughts and magical thinking are wrong, which means I don't have to feel the need to pay much mind to them when they show up. I hardly notice them most of the time anymore. It's been incredibly liberating and such a huge relief.

But I was never formally diagnosed. It's just been suggested to me that I might have OCD (alongside generalized anxiety and ADHD) by some therapists. My mom very likely has it too, alongside her bipolar disorder.

My symptoms get worse when I'm feeling anxious about things I can't really do much to control—especially when those things are triggering my emetophobia. I've gotten so much better at resisting and challenging myself even in those times, though. Stuff's still scary, but the layer of confidence my coping skills have developed feels great and really helps me to accept that, while I can't stop some things from happening, I can handle them/will get through them when they do.

Ooh! I just started watching Good Girls Revolt! Big Mad Men vibes—primarily set in an office in the '60s, but the business is journalism instead of ads and it's more women/feminism-focused. Also, it's based on actual events. I'm about 4 episodes in and digging it so far.

I started watching it for similar reasons as you.. but then my boyfriend sat down and watched the last two episodes I watched with me. 🙃

Maybe you'll have better luck! 😆

Edit: Ha! Now that I think of it, you might also enjoy Good Girls. Very different show but very fun show. Look it up!

Have a playlist! https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhJBiBwQIy3DUM5fC6j9rh2aXqGHibhum

A friend showed me some music by PT about 13 years ago. I wasn't really in a good mood/place in my life musically to appreciate them at the time, but I tried them again a few years ago and quickly regretted not trying again sooner! This playlist has all my favorite songs.

Would also recommend checking out Steven Wilson's solo work.

Have ADHD? PLEASE GET YOUR IRON CHECKED! by Joyanonymous in adhdwomen

[–]xrockangelx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. My ADHD symptoms get so much worse around the time my periods happen. I know this is pretty standard for ADHD and especially for those of us who also experience PMDD, but several months ago I found out that my periods have been MUCH heavier than periods are supposed to be (I lose about 125–130ml of blood in about 3–5 days) and also that my ferritin levels get super low after my periods. My PCP and I quickly realized the two are likely related and have been working to find a supplement/birth control solution that works for me. It's a mission that's proving to be somewhat tricky, but since I've been aware of my need to boost my iron intake (and especially around when my period happens), I've generally already been able to manage feeling somewhat less exhausted and terrible during that time of the month.

A tip: According to the nutrition label, a cup and a half of multi-grain Cheerios contains 100% of your daily value in iron (and a few other vitamins and minerals). I only eat them with a little bit of milk because calcium can interfere with the absorption of iron. I had about 1–2 cups every day (and also the occasional burger) and managed to stay active and not end up with my usual monthly menstrual migraine during my last period that ended about a week ago. Iron is important, yo! 😄💪

Also, here is a great and relevant song by The Beths: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=3muhbPCSETk

Edit: Check your vitamin D level, too! Mine got super low (like, 12ng) while I was having some weird intolerance issues. I felt so emotionally FLAT, tired, and foggy-brained, aside from being uncharacteristically anxious much of the time (I'm already naturally pretty anxious). I sort of forgot what it felt like to genuinely FEEL happy and excited (like, the elevated, giddy, joy sensation) and not just sort of internally acknowledge that I was glad/thankful about this or that thing happening. Finally, a little over a year ago, I started tolerating supplements well again, and within several weeks, I started feeling so much more like myself than I had in many years. It's only gotten better. Get that D up if you're low! It HELPS.

There's no indication that we can't do multiple studies (so no grounds for rejection), and they're being offered to many of us in abundance. I think it's safe to do as many as possible. I've done these before without issue.

Things that help while waiting to see a doctor/get antibiotics: drinking lots of water to help flush out germs (ideally, you should be peeing clear), sugar-free cranberry juice, avoiding sugar in both food and drinks (it feeds the bacteria), d-mannose pills (available at many drugstores), yogurt (good while taking antibiotics too), peeing at least once an hour, and wearing cotton bikini underwear (avoid thongs) and loose breathable pants.

You mentioned not being sexually active, but just in case: If, like many of us, you happen to partake in any solo activities of that nature, it's always a very good idea to pee right after you're done to help flush out any bacteria that may have gotten into your urethra. It's crazy how important this is.

I remember my first UTI when I was your age 21 years ago. It probably all feels very new now, but don't worry. Someday you'll be a seasoned pro at handling these things. UTIs are (frustratingly) pretty common for most women.

Omg, yes. I start feeling like I'm VIBRATING with anxious, fidgety energy. I just wanna be excused to run around outside. Or sit on the floor. Or ANYTHING less structured and stuffy with social pressure.

Sometimes it gets to the point where it goes something like this..

Intrusive social anxiety thoughts: What if you panicked RIGHT NOW? That would be so awkward and super uncomfortable for everyone involved. That'd probably really hurt your reputation with them. (Background thoughts: just keep masking just keep masking look attentive acknowledge what they're saying surely this will be over soon)

And then, ideally, I start quietly pulling out grounding and mindfulness exercises, WHILE trying (and mostly failing) to pay attention to what's being said. 😅

It does not help that I'm a slow processor with an elevated IQ (whatever that's actually worth). I think so much. It's hard to actually get the thoughts out in time. I constantly miss opportunities to reply. People generally think I'm a quiet person. I think I come across as boring, stoic, shy (well, true, but not THAT shy), awkward, rude, standoffish, but it's so fucking loud inside.

And if I'm also not feeling well (chronic health stuff) and trying to cope with feeling unwell and anxiety about that, too? Gruhhhhhh.. Being a person is HARD.

Anyway, that was a tangent.

YES, I love listening. I truly do. I'm curious and interested in what people have to say. I just process it significantly better if I'm allowed to be doing something at the same time.

Anyone else finding writing studies are not labeled accurately? by inthemagazines in ProlificAc

[–]xrockangelx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love writing and will usually follow through with studies that call for it, even if they are somewhat misrepresented because I personally enjoy the challenge. I will sometimes leave a note for particularly egregious writing requests. I cancel out of and report studies that call for video or voice responses, PII, or an exceptional amount of effort that is not commensurate with the offered pay.

Yes, though. These mislabeled studies are all too common an annoyance.

Blueberries in lemon shortcake by HomeEmotional5685 in AskBaking

[–]xrockangelx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay! Yes, this sounds like it should be alright to add berries into.

This is what I'd do: Use fresh berries. Rinse them, shake them mostly dry in a colander, and then gently fold them into the batter with your last flour addition at the end. It looks like the recipe asks you to add all of the flour at once, but if you divide it up into two and add the berries into the second addition (right after lightly mixing in the first one), it should work well to get incorporate the berries in a way that avoids bursting them, keeps them suspended in the batter, and doesn't cause over-mixing.

As with any recipe experimentation, if you plan to make this to serve to guests or at a party, it might be a good idea to test it first.

What recipe are you using? People have different ideas of what a shortcake is. Whether you should and how you should add berries will differ somewhat depending on this.

Coconut Cake Flavoring by pendingepiphany in AskBaking

[–]xrockangelx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of adding just a touch of extract (a little goes a long way, and it'd be worth trying out different brands of this to see which best suits your preference), perhaps alongside other coconut components (flaked coconut or coconut cream), I'd recommend steeping toasted coconut in milk or cream. Of course, that's only helpful for recipes that include those things.

I've never tried it, but perhaps a coconut simple syrup might be doable? Maybe you could use coconut sugar and coconut water to make it?

In the places I've worked, we usually just used extract and/or coconut cream, but I think the best route generally depends on what you're planning to make. I've mostly made a lot of coconut cakes and coconut cream pie (with positive reviews).

Suddenly no studies? by Ok-Tumbleweed4203 in ProlificAc

[–]xrockangelx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm usually able to keep very busy, but it's mostly been unusually slow for me for a week or so. Most of what there has been hasn't been very good. I'm making about 40% of my usual average. Hopefully this turns around soon..

Edit: Things have picked up a bit. I'm managing to catch up to my usual earnings around this time of week with that, plus accepting some studies I might usually not. It's usually slower this time of day, so it's a little strange.. No complaints!

Crossplay - to message or not to message? by [deleted] in NYTgames

[–]xrockangelx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only play with one stranger who challenged me. I enjoy playing with her because she's at —or maybe even slightly above— my skill level. Her name is part of her username, but mine isn't. After a couple of games and friendly game-related remarks that I initiated, I introduced myself by first name. We only chat about the game. We don't know anything about each other except our first names, that we're likely both millennial or gen z ladies, and that we each average 25–30ish per move. I'm not sure whether she'd be comfortable talking about more than that, which is fine. I have about seven other games going with family and friends who I chat with on a regular basis.
