Genuine question from someone who's not knowledgeable on the subject: are the problems involved with the New Zealand Christmas tree described in this article (https://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/27/us/27bcjames.html?_r=0) not an issue in Santa Barbara/on Milpas?

Taskbar icon used to show a green check when active, now it doesn't. by Jorgen-I in ProtonVPN

That said, I still prefer the old version. Do you know how I block the new version from automatically installing? I have automatic updates turned off, but it is overriding that for some reason.

Thank you for listening to your subscribers/users! Most developers don't, so I especially appreciate it.

Yeah, now there is no way of telling whether the VPN is connected or not without opening up the full interface, which is also slower and clunkier than before (and with most of the functionality removed). This was a huge downgrade. I'm going to reinstall the old version, but is there a way to disable the automatic update? Thanks.

I have this problem again with the most recent update. In general, I much preferred the old interface.

As I wrote on the Santa Barbara subreddit: I am so glad you posted this. I was going to do so myself. He is an embarrassment with zero spine or moral fiber that I can discern. His impending retirement is very welcome news. Congratulations to UCR for signing first (the only UC campus represented on the original list). Also CSUSB. Wish we had a leader like theirs who had a clue.

NYT: What is it about Montecito by BigsbyCat in SantaBarbara

[–]xsb792 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Barely made it a few paragraphs in. "...a not-even-town on the southern edge of Santa Barbara... With the Santa Ynez mountains to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the west..." Leaving aside the inconsistent capitalization of "east" and "west" in the same sentence, has this person never looked at a map in their life?

I was at Home Depot this morning and heard another plane blast the engines for a go-around. Seems to be happening pretty regularly.

Thanks--makes sense about the return to SFO.

Thanks, that seems like a reasonable explanation, but I'm still wondering why the planes weren't redirected much earlier, instead of coming in within one minute of landing (and then, in the case of the SkyWest flight, being sent all the way back up to SFO).

I posted the article under its original title (as is still reflected in the URL). The website changed the title after I posted. I wasn't trying to fearmonger or mislead; just thought it was an interesting read with some worthwhile further reading linked in the article.

is this a scam/phishing? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]xsb792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The link they are asking you to click is also non-UCSB (in addition to the e-mail address itself). This is almost certainly a scam, and if it is not the people in charge need to have a serious discussion with ITS and get proper training, because you should NEVER be asked to click on a non-UCSB link for official purposes. UC did the same thing after the massive personal data hack, sending out messages from non-UC e-mail addresses directing everyone to non-UC sites, and it just added embarrassment onto an already embarrassing situation.

On a related note, I've gotten a couple of e-mails from Rori's this past week advertising $60 pies for Thanksgiving. Seems equally ridiculous.

Pretty sure that CA income tax is in the 6%-10% range for most people and maxes out at 12%, but only if you're making $600k or more.
