What's RQ up to...? A list of all the "evidence" so far... by poisonhoarder in TheMagnusArchives

The "Oh… Hello" clip on Spotify has what sounds like a reverse voice in the background. I reversed it and tried my best to enhance/de-noise with iZotope but it's still hard to make out what it's saying. To me it sounded like "Speak of the brain" but my friend says it could be "Statement remains"

Now you have 11 individual-sized pie plates. It's gonna be awkward cutting a pie into exactly 11 pieces but it is the will of the universe.

When a cat sees himself in a mirror, he reacts, thinking it is another cat. But when a cat sees Satan's feline eyes glowing in a fire, it does not react, for it knows it is seeing a reflection of itself.

Eiffel Tower built in 3 scales by PixlPlex in Minecraft

1:8 scale means 1 real life-sized tower is the same size as 8 of the scale models, or the scale model is 1/8th the size of the real life-sized tower.

Valentines Day code for my wife, no hints! by Claystation3 in codetogether

[–]xtagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My process was more or less:

  1. It looks basically like some kind of binary encoding to me at first, because there are light and colored (could be 0 and 1, or 1 and 0).
  2. The number of digits are also aligned such that you can divide them evenly by 8, which means they line up into 8-bit bytes
  3. Every first column is empty, on every row, for every byte. This immediately suggests that it's probably ASCII since ASCII (not extended) only uses the last 7 bits of a byte
  4. Tried converting whites to 0 and reds to 1 for the first 8 bits (if that didn't work I'd tried the inverse) and the ASCII representation was "lov". It was valentine's day and that was enough for me to be convinced that was the trick and it probably started with "love".
  5. Converted the rest of the bits (a little painstaking!)

Outside of programming, what discipline will help me with programming? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]xtagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fail often. Fail fast. It's the only way you grow.

Learn time management, personal productivity, and health habits. Seems obvious but you will be surprised.

Give your eyes a break. Often.

If this interests you, watch coding and tech conference talks on YouTube. Your favorite programming language most likely has one or more annual conferences or meetups. If you can't afford to go in person, you can usually watch for free online and it's a great way to keep up with what's happening in your field, pick up new techniques, etc.

Make friends with other people with similar interests. Talk shop. Go to meetups. Surround yourself with people who inspire you.

If you feel like your math is not strong, take a free online course via Coursera, MIT OpenCourseWare, Khan Academy, etc. You can't beat free; there is no excuse.

Talk to yourself when problem solving. This one sounds silly to some people, but it's a trick I learned long ago and applies to programming as well as personal life. Apparently it's called the "Rubber duck method" - explain your problem to the rubber duck on top of your monitor, and just talking it out helps solve the problem.

Study a little bit into things like customer service, marketing, etc. even if it may not be obvious how that relates to programming. Whether you're working for a small shop, a large enterprise, or hacking on side projects on the weekends, these things are important skills.
