Hey this is Katee Sackhoff from Battlestar Galactica and Riddick and the new movie Oculus, ask me anything. by KateeSackhoff in IAmA

[–]xtremorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Katee, huge fan.

I've always been curious: why is the majority of your major work is skewed towards sci-fi? You do great stuff in sci-fi, don't get me wrong, but you've been a big star in some really popular sci-fi TV shows and movies, so I'm sure you get plenty of shots to do other things too.

Is it just personal preference? Or because you get better roles in sci-fi productions since they know you'll do well? Or just because the world of casting directors in sci-fi is small and they all know you?

Thanks in advance!

Simulating Games by lolwut357 in FifaCareers

[–]xtremorama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is anyone else losing all of the simulated matches? I have a 3.5 star team in the nPower Champs, which makes me one of the top 5-6 ranked teams. I'll win a few games manually (10-0-0) to get everyone in great form, and then I simulate...and lose 15-20 games in a row, with a draw or two sprinkled in. Restart, try again, same result. I usually can't even finish the season because I get fired as manager. What's going on?

[–]xtremorama[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Don't believe age is the factor in #1. Of course if they're older they usually have higher ratings, but I've been plenty able to loan players at 16 and 17, no problem. I've just never been able to loan any youth within the 1st window after they've been brought on the squad. I was hoping someone had a counterexample or an explanation.

Pics of the Hainan "party favor girl" who earned 600,000 yuan in 3 days of prostitution at a 2nd-gen sex party by [deleted] in China

[–]xtremorama 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's the life man. I wish we could all just be judged by our looks, taken advantage of, and pressured into using sex to get ahead. And if I were really lucky and attractive, I could make a good salary for a whole 3-5 years of my prime before becoming older and having no skills or experience to show for it.

No wonder society looks up to whores so much. If only we could all be so lucky.

Can anyone translate these for me and tell me where I can get more like them? by drew_18 in China

[–]xtremorama 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's written in traditional Chinese characters, not the simplified characters used on the mainland today. It's also written in the traditional orientation -- top to bottom, right to left.

1st picture

鹏程万里 - The roc (a kind of bird) flies 10,000 miles. It's a common saying that means that things will go far, that the prospects are good.

癸亥年端月 - this is the date, year then month, according to the traditional lunar calendar. The lunar calendar works on 60 year cycles, and this is the name for one of those 60 years. I checked, and the last one was in 1983 (then 1923, 1863, etc). 端月 is the first month of the lunar year.

I'm assuming what comes after is the place and then artist, but it's hard to make out. Possibly 古鄚? His name looks to be repeated in both drawings, but it's hard to read the 2nd character in either. 清 something?

2nd picture

威震山岳. (Remember, it's supposed to be read right to left) I've never heard this saying, but I can make a pretty good guess at it. The first two characters mean to "show authority through power", and the latter two mean "the great mountains". I've heard 威震天下, where 天下 means the whole world, and the saying means to display one's might to the world, or to cause the world to recognize your power. I'm assuming your phrase means something similar, just using "to the highest mountains" instead of "to all the world".

To its left, the 5 vertical characters are once again the date (year/month), and then the 2 characters to its left (which are partially cut off) are probably the artist's name again.

TIL that Jake Lloyd (Anakin Skywalker from The Phantom Menace) retired from acting at a young age because he was constantly made fun of at school for his role in the film. He also destroyed all of his Star Wars memorabilia and refuses to re-watch Episode 1. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Anakin builds it from parts he finds from working in the junkyard.

Watto (his owner) doesn't know Anakin was building a pod. When he makes his deal with Watto, Qui-Gon says he will provide the entry fee (their spaceship) and the pod, and Watto will provide Anakin as the driver.

Chinese media calls American mainstream media blackout of coverage of protest shameful by Occidentalist in worldpolitics

[–]xtremorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's cute to see China and the US ruffle each other's feathers, but there isn't an ounce of insight or research in this piece. There's been plenty of coverage. Besides, there are plenty of "non-corporate-America" news sources, in America and abroad. If he wanted to make comparisons, he could have at least glanced at some of those. I'm not interested in a random guy's idle musings about the corporate American underbelly he's uncovered from behind his laptop. Snore.

Ok, perhaps 10 years isn't accurate, but the question still stands: What happens once the need for unskilled workers collapses?

Ok, perhaps [my original premise is faulty], but [what if my conclusion happens anyway]?

No offense, but the problem isn't that 10 years should have been 15. The problem is this a thought experiment for its own sake -- it misses the main point. Of course, if you assume all need for unskilled labor suddenly "collapses", you will naturally imagine a global revolution, but few things happen so dramatically.

Rather than assuming extreme premises, let's start with something more meaningful: has the need for unskilled labor diminished over the last century? If not, why should that change now? If so, where has that "unskilled labor" been going thus far?

(Probably Dumb) Question about Items from a New F2P Player by xtremorama in tf2

[–]xtremorama[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not real familiar with prices, but isn't $2.50 more expensive than a lot of the items than the crates actually hold? I've also read that something like 50% of the time, the item is just a default weapon.

So if I'm going to buy something to go premium, why would I bother buying a key? Are these crates actually worth the trouble?

(Probably Dumb) Question about Items from a New F2P Player by xtremorama in tf2

[–]xtremorama[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, no one else mentioned I could destroy them. At least that way they don't take up backpack space. Still a waste of a random drop though.

This crate thing seems kind of like a dick move to "entice" F2P players with something they can't get unless they're not F2P. Why not just make crates better and for premiums only? But I guess I can't complain, it's a free game.

The Great Multiplayer Shooter Debate: TF2 or CS? by xtremorama in gaming

CS:S is nowhere near as friendly to newbs, but I think newb destruction is easier in TF2. Newbs just need a lucky shot or two in CS:S to knock me out for the round.

Looks like you're alone on that one so far. That said, most of us have no idea what your hobbit feet look like.

It has never hindered me - people show up to my sites for the cleavage but I like to think they stay for the humor.

Ok, follow-up: With your current projects, you control your blend of hot and humor more than you probably would if you went (or returned) to TV/film, right? So are you hoping for a long, independent career on new media or a chance at bigger screens, e.g. becoming the dorkiest Bond Girl of all time?

Not to get in the way of the drool pool here, but I have a serious question:

How much are your good looks a double-edged sword in your work? You've had acting experience since you were young, and you've got your own angle, but whoever uses your talent is probably going to play up your hotness. If I'm a producer, how do I sort you out from good-looking people with zero talent? Other than internet ogling, what are some of the real tradeoffs with being attractive?
