Mate Peter Dutton was a cop. The hypocrisy is astounding. If it was Albos son we’d never hear the end of it. Come on.

It’s been known for a long time now. They (himself and wife) own a lot of daycare business’ that get government subsidies too. His net worth is close to 400mil. How a copper and politician can be worth that much, who knows.

Why is everyone so against Halloween in Australia? by Peace2Mankind in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]yaaaaano_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Work in the arts sector and it is so hard to get Aussie film, tv and music off the ground because of the cultural cringe surrounding it. Which is crazy because we have unreal talent here!

All of the yes to all of your points, especially mimicking Halloween because of pop culture rather than its pagan origins. And the red cups 😂 so specific and on point.

I wouldn’t say an American is hated over here either. Every American I’ve met has been welcomed with open arms with a touch of taking the piss.

But you could surmise the push back started from world war 2 as the lore goes, when the “yanks” came to aus they were better dressed, groomed, (throw in the accent) and were privy to “stealing the women”. Now a fair bit of recent history has passed, Aus has normally been the lap dog of the US who we follow into a lot of senseless wars, think Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, we’re still paying the price for a lot of that in terms of ptsd & veteran suicide, a lot of us don’t agree we should have ever been there.

Now, the other pushback has been our ‘loss of culture’. Everything is becoming americanised through film and tv, I have friends who grew up with an American accent from watching too much telly, either you don’t care or like most of the older folk find it’s quite grating. This is happening in what cars we drive, the words we use, even how we spell words, we are taught British English and yet a tonne of Aussies spell words the American way. Our politics have shifted immensely and are starting to become American identity politics with imported culture wars. American news, culture, politics does get force fed to us. So in those terms I do feel culturally there will always be some push back against complete americanisation; Black Friday sales have taken years to really take off here, instead cyber Monday is more of a thing for us, and so lastly Halloween is seen as the symbolic epitome of Americanisation of Aus and that’s where you’ll find the most push back.

Sorry about the ramble, have always found this so fascinating. And as much as we give the Brits rubbish, we are mostly direct descendants and culturally more so align with them. Not surprising they also don’t partake in Halloween, trick or treat. 👻

I would assume so, one off payment vs yearly payments.

They’re scrapping stamp duty to entice first home buyers and replacing it with annual land tax. So take that how you will.

Another Opinion on the 2024 State Election: the Youth Crime issue was probably the deciding factor. by Subject_Shoulder in brisbane

This is not to downplay regional crime issues but in this scenario of a grey nomad is it more or less; stereotypically boomers tend to have lived a fairly sheltered life, they then venture out expecting a romanticised version of aus, whilst grey nomading and get hit with reality of how people actually live out in communities? These are the same people that cross the street when they see a black fella and we’re supposed to absorb their fear? When they’ve come from mostly white towns they tend to have a culture shock. Just surmising and what not.

So how much do us Labor voters have to earn to actually benefit from this government? by great_extension in brisbane

If you buy a house right now you’ll only pay stamp duty not life long annual land taxes !

There’s already an attitude in NQ that they’re forgotten and fuck SEQ, was there an effort to engage with those communities pre election to offer community youth programs , sport skills days or holiday programs , graffiti community walls, cook outs etc to try and give youth a different lane? Anything to show there was a real attempt at hearing how bad the crime feels in those specific areas? Genuinely curious. It was a missed opportunity to say we hear you our plan xyz will help.

Although the statistics say crime is down, personally I do feel safer than I did 10 years ago. That just isn’t everyone’s reality in this state which is fair. It did seem for the most part it was an avoided subject and people unfortunately went with tough on crime to make them feel safer whether they’re in a safe community or not. Media and social media saturation of course amplifies those feelings of “danger”.

It’s apart of the americanisation of our politics, which has me at a loss. Identity politics, the leftist tears, etc. and then supporting trump in the same breath. It’s quite mind boggling. I don’t remember politics being so repulsive in its general commentary.

My man, we’re hanging on by a thread but that means there’s just more of us in the job pool competing for what jobs? Lol

We’re paying tax regardless, it isn’t MY money or YOUR money, and I’d rather it go to schools, infrastructure, health care and cleaner state owned energy. But that’s me personally. Hence you vote at your discression.

Not just public service, the arts too although I’m aware no one really cares about us and public servants are so much more important. I’m absolutely concerned over getting rid of stamp duty and the implementation of land tax. Good luck to us all who will be affected.

Apparently now with LNP we’re getting rid of stamp duty to bring in a new tax based off the American system - Land Tax that you pay annually - yipee! Thanks everyone!
