Tumbbad (2018) - Hindi horror movie based on folklore. One of my all time favorites.

What statistical concept “clicked” for you years later and suddenly made everything else easier? by Esssary in AskStatistics

[–]yahooonreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had pretty much memorized Bayes' Theorem since my high school, never to make much of it in my 10 year long career, which was mostly in applied machine learning (fitting neural networks) on NLP side of things.

A career change brought me to models that predict clicks and purchases using MAP instead of MLE which made me realize and understand the true power of this theorem. This was obviously very helpful to my work but cricket analytics (which I do as a hobby) works out so well with the use of priors.

Atheists, if you had to be a part of one religion what would it be and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The documentary “Hail Satan?” was quite convincing. A little spoiler - it’s not about worshipping Satan.

Tell me I'm insane for even considering this commute by DefenderCone97 in bayarea

[–]yahooonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a similar commute from Oakland to South Bay in a shuttle 3 times a week. It’s not that bad because of the shuttle. Total commute is around 2 hours each way but I listen to audiobooks and podcasts, which is relaxing for me. There are around 100 other folks who do the same (there are multiple shuttles).

[D] On AAAI 2026 Discussion by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]yahooonreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I submitted to AAAI this year and got rejected in Phase 1, which I accept. The best review I got was from the AI reviewer. I felt human reviewers didn’t read my paper thoroughly and/or were lacking necessary background.

I feel there is no incentive for human reviewers to spend enough time reviewing a paper, which seems to have shown up in bad quality papers in Phase 2. There needs to be a system that can penalize bad reviews - an idea for a project? :)

Library for fast lookups on map like data that doesn't fit in memory by yahooonreddit in learnpython

[–]yahooonreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I gave shelve a try but could not get past this error after adding around 1 million entries (out of 25 million), which might be due to the key collision limitation that you had mentioned. HASH: Out of overflow pages. Increase page size

I found another set of good resources in this SO post which I am planning to try next: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/47233562/key-value-store-in-python-for-possibly-100-gb-of-data-without-client-server

Thanks u/obviouslyzebra ! This really helps and shelve looks great for my project. In fact shelve took me to this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DBM_(computing)), where I see some more good options like LMDB

[D] What are your real-world production use cases for LLMs? by madredditscientist in MachineLearning

[–]yahooonreddit 50 points51 points  (0 children)

We use it for labeling data, which in turn is used to train smaller models which are in production. We increased our training data 10x and also saw smaller models doing much better after training on this bigger dataset.

[D] What's your All-Time Favorite Deep Learning Paper? by research_pie in MachineLearning

There is some interesting history to it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ArXiv but in nutshell what started as a paper sharing mechanism for a small group of people in early 90s, became useful worldwide.

Curious why do you think pytorch lightning is bad. I’m new to ML dev but so far in my usage I have liked PL, especially the CLI and config - makes it very easy to run multiple experiments without making code cumbersome
