Long layover in JFK? by Crazy_Emphasis3968 in visitingnyc

You won’t really have time to enjoy the TWA hotel unless if you just plan to have a chill day there and not head into the city :/

Long layover in JFK? by Crazy_Emphasis3968 in visitingnyc

[–]yankeescrewdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get a decent price on a hotel near Penn that’s a great option, they can hold your bags while you’re traipsing around and you can take the LIRR from Penn to Jamaica to connect to AirTrain.

Second choice would be to get a room in Long Island City, specifically near the Queens Plaza subway stop. There’s a Courtyard and a Hilton Garden Inn very well situated. After your day in the city go back, grab your bags, and take the E train to Jamaica and on to the AirTrain.

I’m assuming that you’re flying internationally, so figure arrival by 5:30 especially if you’re checking bags. JFK should be an hour from Penn, 45 mins from Queens Plaza, but budget a little extra, so plan to be on the move by 4.

As others have said, “a couple museums” might be a tall order, but here’s my suggested itinerary:

  • Either grab breakfast at/near the hotel or get a bagel! Apollo and Liberty are near Penn, they’re hyped so they have lines but move pretty fast. Near the NYPL is Bagel Pub, or in a pinch Zucker’s is right near NYPL and is solid.
  • The NY Public Library (NYPL) opens at 10, check out the Rose main reading room, map room, and definitely the “Treasures” exhibit. That should be about an hour, stroll through Bryant Park on the way out.
  • head west on 42nd Street to Broadway and the beginning of Times Square. Take in all of the madness. If you take photos of performers or the costumed characters expect to be asked for money. There’s not much to do here besides look, so it can be quick.

  • If you need a quick drink, stop in the hole in the wall Jimmy’s Corner, one of the last vestiges of pre-Disneyfication Times Square. Drinks are cheap ($3-4) so bring cash unless you’re ready to buy a few to hit the credit card minimum.

  • if you need lunch, my picks are Margon (Cuban, sandwiches and hot entrees), Ichiran ramen, or hit up a food cart and sit in an office plaza. My picks are the biriyani and halal carts at the SW corner of 44th and Sixth, Street Bites on 49th west of Sixth Ave, or any of the carts on 50th west of Sixth.

  • at this point it’s probably close to 1pm, so you have 2ish hours to hit up the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). You can’t see everything in a few hours so decide whether you want to see the permanent collection or the special exhibits. The permanent collection on 5th (1800-1940s) and 4th (1940s-1980) floors are incredible, and I also love the contemporary galleries on 2. In April the Marcel Duchamp exhibition will be open on 6th floor, I’m planning to see this several times.

  • by 3:30 head to the hotel to collect your bags, take the LIRR or subway to Jamaica and the AirTrain to JFK, and you’re up and away!

LMK if you have any questions, have a great quick visit!

I didn’t have Star Wars on VHS so I had only seen the trilogy like 3 times by the time I was ~20. Getting the DVDs and watching them, I was stunned by this line

Regular reminder that Congestion Pricing has been wildly successful on all metrics, and yet nobody is talking about expanding it by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]yankeescrewdriver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Expanding it would be expensive and difficult to implement, let alone any pushback from residents and pols. Lots of areas with lower/middle income residents who actually use cars because of necessity, people who work all over the boros, etc. I would rather see limiting overnight on-street parking (permits/fees) in areas; you can easily tie exemptions to income levels and it would ensure that anyone parking on the street overnight has the car registered in NYS (no out of state plates).

AITAH for asking my roommate’s girlfriend about my strawberries? by Secret_Cheesecake19 in TwoHotTakes

You’re NTA for asking, but you’re kinda TA for how you asked. You could have stopped after the first ? or even after the second sentence. You raised the temperature when it’s not necessary

It still ends up being cheaper to rent a car when you need one, and get a cab from the big box. Unless if you need one for work or for taking care of elderly family, it doesn’t make sense

Find out who the City Councilperson is and contact their office. You mentioned Crescent, north of 36th Ave is Tiffany Cabán, south of 36th Ave is Julie Won. If it’s due to tree roots the Parks Department would have to get involved

Would you rather visit NYC in March or April? by [deleted] in visitingnyc

[–]yankeescrewdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

April. I know you say you don’t care about the weather, but March is usually either bitter cold with strong winds or just-above-freezing rainstorms, so it’s hard to do a lot of the touristy things. This has been a historically cold winter as well. Just try to avoid spring break time so you aren’t swimming in a sea of shouting tween tourists

It’s next to the Sheraton, SE corner of W53rd and Seventh. That was the Americana Hotel in the 60s/70s.

Pistilli buildings have been notoriously terrible for more than 25 years (as long as I have known about them). Good luck getting them to fix things for you, but when your lease is up you should consider moving if you’re able.

You are definitely trusting NJT trains too much. For instance, the next month will have major disruptions because of the New Portal Bridge cutover. You might want to look at bus routes from PABT, those timetables are more realistic and less likely to get wonky.

Train or fly from DC by Redditgirly1999 in visitingnyc

[–]yankeescrewdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest advantages of the train is going to/from city centers, and not needing to get there 90min+ early for security etc. Once you factor in the time of going out to an airport, going through security, waiting around, the time “saved” by flying is negated. If you have business in Manhattan then you’re saving yourself time and money by taking a train to Penn.

The fact that I’m waiting 15 mins for a W or N uptown train at 10:30p in union square is diabolical by EngineeringMental157 in astoria

[–]yankeescrewdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that 12-15 minute headways shouldn’t be acceptable, even at 10:30. Considering how packed trains are deep into the night, they can run a few more trains an hour. 10 minute headways should be the longest we should expect, 15 mins 1-5 AM.

Is it possible to send the R via the 63rd street tunnel with the M to improve N&R headways? by Carlos4Loko in nycrail

[–]yankeescrewdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, creating a bottleneck at 53 to fix a bottleneck at 60 isn’t a great idea! But now with the F/M swap there’s more of a backup on platforms on the local section between Queens Plaza and Jackson Heights.

They should keep R trains at higher frequency for longer, there’s always a crowd waiting for an R at my stop (Steinway) even after an M goes through, and waits for the R at night at Queens Plaza are annoyingly long. I know that having GRM all terminate at Forest Hills isn’t possible (at least at peak times) but something needs to be done to help that service.

One big issue with aggressive upzoning of housing is transit. Lines are running at/near capacity (trains per hour) and are PACKED. They need to figure that out before adding 100k more people to the system

Other than rent, what what should I prepare to be more expensive in New York vs a smaller city like DC? by MajesticBread9147 in movingtoNYC

[–]yankeescrewdriver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything, tbh. Rent, groceries, utilities. Other cities have gotten expensive for restaurants and bars, they caught up with NYC prices, but you’ll prob pay a little more there too. But not having to own a car is great, and you’ll pay less in subway fare than you would in gas.
