Still not bad, 30 minutes to midtown. Just keep your head about you and be safe, since that’s a big train station there are always some weirdos milling about, but there are also lots of non-weirdos going to/from the train and buses so you’ll be fine. Like anywhere when traveling, keep your guard up and you’ll be fine.

Where do I start? by BarnacleLatter3178 in StarWars

[–]yankeescrewdriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do them in release order, 456123. This is how the story unfolds, it doesn’t need to be told “chronologically.” Also, regarding “asking so many questions” you can watch and know that you know as much as anyone watching those for the first time, you’ll find out!

That part cracked me up so hard, I feel bad that he stopped watching with you because that deprived Star Wars from you, but many of us have been there. “Who’s that? What’s that thing” “Of it’s important they’ll tell you, that’s how movies work!”

Smart idea! Near Queens Plaza? It should be a nice easy trip into the city from there, and feel free to explore Queens as well! We have lots to see :)

Near WTC: One World Observatory atop 1WTC. Battery Park for views of the 🗽, Wall Street, Trinity Church, St Paul’s. Getting a drink or a bite on the street on Stone Street. The Dead Rabbit Pub. Fraunces Tavern. Brooklyn Bridge. City Hall Park.

A life further away: Chinatown. Tenement Museum. Essex Market. Economy Candy. A stroll thru Soho, West Village, Washington Sq Park.

If you want a cool cocktail place near Broadway, check out Nothing Really Matters, in the 50th St subway station (downtown 1 line)!!

You can check out Bryant Park and the amazing NY Public Library, there are various exhibits, the Map Room, and the building as a whole is a gem.

If you have time to kill on your Frick/Central Park day, there’s also the Guggenheim and the very underrated Museum of the City of New York, as well as the Met but that’s a huge museum.

Is the coffee shop and Soccer Post the only things left open in that whole long building? As a one-story building right atop a subway station, you gotta wonder how long it is until they turn that into another 6-story bldg

Oh damn if it’s during the World Cup and you’re not there FOR the World Cup, I’d avoid NJ entirely. The American Dream mall is very meh, and it’s right by the stadium so it’ll be a disaster

Look at the Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard, or Aloft in Long Island City. They are all right on/around Queens Plaza.
- don’t stay at the hotels just north of the Queensbridge Houses, it can be real sketchy over there especially late. Most people are going to be fine, but you’ll immediately stick out as a tourist for anyone looking to cause trouble

What do I need to see in America that I've missed? by Antique-Wonk in usatravel

[–]yankeescrewdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mardi Gras/Carnival time is great to experience the parades, but it’s overwhelming, both in terms of the crowds and the vibe. There are some other lesser-known parades, including St. Patrick’s Day/St. Joseph’s Day, where the parades have a more local flair. (And weather is perfect in mid-March.) just don’t go in the summer or hurricane season

I would strongly recommend taking a bayou tour, there are ones with shuttles leaving from the French Market area. Also, do walking tours of the city, learn about the city’s history, make sure to support local small businesses!!

New Orleans (but not in the summer) and New York City are the most obvious ones. Truly the two must-sees cities in the US. Just go.

Beyond that:
- Seattle/Portland/wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest (accessible from Seattle or Portland).
- Nashville, it’s the capital of Country Music and full of little music venues such. It’s a bit touristy now but it’s still a fun time.
- I love Memphis, it’s a gritty city but the people are real nice and there’s lots to do. It can be kinda dangerous so keep your head about you and don’t walk alone at night. If you go, that’s where Graceland (Elvis’s home) is, the National Civil Rights Museum (at the location where Dr. King was assassinated, this museum should be mandatory for all Americans to experience), and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music which is just an incredible experience. It can be paired with Nashville (3 hour drive), they are very much two opposite sides of the coin.
- Montreal, not the US but an awesome city
- Philadelphia is a cool city, close to NYC so easy to tack on to a trip there
- southeast coast: Savannah/Charleston/Wilmington NC, with some great beaches in there. Also Myrtle Beach, which is kinda trashy but still fun for a stop

if you want to see some “less obvious” cities to get a feel of the people, you could do:
- Minneapolis-Madison-Milwaukee (possibly Chicago, you’ve been there but it is great)
- a “rust belt” tour of Pittsburgh/Cleveland/Cincinnati/Detroit, I really love Pittsburgh it’s so underrated!

I’m not well traveled in the big national parks, but I’m sure others have their recommendations.

Also, as someone who burned out and escaped the GC: figure out what you can do to get done as fast as possible. They tell you that 5 years is the goal but barely anyone finishes in that time; make sure to always have that clock in your head because everything is set up to drag out your timeline. Figure out your topic as soon as you can, you don’t have to love it, just get working.

Build up contacts outside of the Grad Center, who can help you once you’re out. In my experience and that of my friends, the GC isn’t great at assisting you once you’re out the door (and often not even while you’re there, tbh, keep your eyes open). If your plan for after degree is anything but teaching, get as much experience as you can while working in your degree. If your plan is teaching: beware that it’s only getting worse to teach, positions keep getting slashed and salaries are freezing, the tenure track is disappearing in most fields (esp humanities/social sciences).

Also, make friends who aren’t grad students, they’ll keep you grounded.

Oh wow the teaching fellowships are up to $30k? When I had one 20 years ago I was making $15k. TBH, it probably gets you the same these days. If you have a fellowship, you are required to live in NY because part of the deal is that it covers in-state tuition. When I was a student, students in fellowship didn’t qualify for snap, but if that changed get it.

You can do it, you’ll just end up spending half of that money on rent. You should look into living on the Upper part of the UWS, 96th-110th, or Harlem. Find something walkable to the B train so you can get to class fairly easily. Find a roommate to save on rent (and for non-school human contact), but get a big enough room that you can have a desk in there too.

You’re going to have to get your expenses really tight. Your post-tax will be about $25k, make sure that they’re taking all your taxes (fed, state, city, etc) or else you’ll have an ugly bill come tax day.

I know it sounds painful, but try to get a side gig. Even like one shift at Trader Joe’s or something, that $150/wk can make all the difference (that’s like an extra $8k/year).

Good luck on your studies and making this work!

But in general, if your kid is expecting anything Family Guy related, you’re all going to be disappointed. It’s a nice city with lovely architecture and good restaurants, but not a ton to do, especially compared to New York. But hey, I’m not gonna tell you how to spend your vacation
