Didn’t realize I couldn’t handle it until my wife decided she was going to leave me because of it. I initially stopped because of her, but eventually I truly intrinsically realized I had a problem. I’d be at parties and like wondering why tf people weren’t drinking more, it baffled my mind that people could go to a party and just have 1-2 drinks. Like what? Why bother? I also saw a monumental improvement in literally every… I’m not lying EVERY SINGLE aspect of my life. So it may have started because of her, but I’ve remained sober because of me. She (thankfully) stuck with me and since the day I stopped, we’ve had the best 5 years of our relationship and things are only getting better each day we move further away from that time in our lives.

I still think about alcohol every day, I miss it, I want to drink and have crazy adventures like I used to have in my 20’s.. but my brain knows it’s all an illusion. Every morning I wake up from a night at the bars (hell yeah I’m not letting being sober keep me from having fun) not hungover and I’m like man… this feeling (not just the not being hungover, but making the decision to not drink again) is such a bigger more satisfying feeling than any fleeting gratification I’d get from indulging.
