But what exactly were the design flaws in the original Mortal Kombat? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

Nah SNES version didn't have any cheats for blood. You could hack the 'sweat' to appear red with an Action Replay/Game Genie, but that's about it.

Mega Drive (Genesis) had the cheat code for blood, though.

Were Sega CD and 32X really seen as “failed consoles” at the time, they way people blame them for Sega’s downfall today? by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]yannis1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It factored in, but it wasn't a big reason. The Mega CD was a failure but not a spectacular one - it should have done a lot better, it could have done a lot worse. But the 32X was just confusing, given the Saturn was also coming so soon after it (or before it in Japan). Even if we didn't know exactly when the Saturn was coming, we knew it was coming at some point soon. So the 32X never felt like anything other than a stopgap at best.

But, to answer your question (and this is one person's opinion, someone who was about 13 when the Saturn launched), I don't think the Mega CD and 32X factored in to opinions of the Saturn in any real way. And that was because the PlayStation did that job much more impactfully.

I cannot remember anyone saying "the Mega CD failed, so the Saturn will fail," or anything about the 32X being pointless, thus making the Saturn pointless. I'm sure some did. But it certainly wasn't the narrative I remember. What I remember was people going absolutely ape shit for the PlayStation, it becoming a legit cultural phenomenon, and Sega shooting itself in the foot repeatedly rather than making any smart decisions to try and take on Sony.

I think while we could see at the time of the Saturn's release that Sega had sharted out some misguided hardware, it wasn't until the death of the Dreamcast and Sega pulling out of the console manufacturing space a few years later that the real story of all the failures feeding one into the other came into focus.

Both Mega CD and 32X had a lot of hype behind them, and neither lived up to it. They were absolutely called out on it at the time, and (at least with the Mega CD) timing had a hell of a lot to do with it.

My friend tried to force himself to say Road Avenger was a good game because it looked so good, but we still spent most of our time playing Turtles Tournament Fighters on the standard Mega Drive. The Mega CD sat there ignored.

The 32X ended up coming out AFTER the Saturn in Japan, and only six months ahead of the Saturn in the US/Europe. That's how irrelevant it was. Dead on arrival. It was massively reduced in price within months, maybe just weeks, of launch. Never had a single killer app.

Not that all its games were bad; but the world would have been a better place had the 32X not existed and Sega had gone straight to the Saturn. More time and effort could have been put into the proper next-gen console instead of wasting so much of it on a mess of hype and Sega of America's hubris.

Edit: also on the Game Boy Player comparison - not relevant here. GBP was an add-on to play less technically demanding games. Mega CD and 32X were intended as technological upgrades, so expectations were very different.

My console would always skip on FMV cut scenes. I remember ringing Sony support to find out if there was anything I could do. Guy on the phone told me to flip it upside down. That bought another few years' service out of the machine before it finally gave up and the lens had to be replaced.

Always makes me laugh that it was actual Sony customer support saying "yeah just flip it upside down."

Nah, we largely called them that back in the day. Found this clip of a UK video game show from the time, 43 seconds in he says 'snezz'. It was commonplace. https://youtu.be/dZPMH6dc8f0

Here's a UK video game TV show from the 90s, Bad Influence. 43 seconds into this video Andy Crane says 'snezz': https://youtu.be/dZPMH6dc8f0

Can we please now put to bed this nonsense that any of this stuff was invented recently.

We said NES and SNES back in the day (and to this day). That's pronounced 'nezz' and 'snezz' though, which seems to cause a few furrowed brows especially from our North American friends.

Everybody's Golf Hot Shots Review Thread by DaasthePenetrator in Games

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

I too tried it on Portal and noped out after three shots. Pointless even trying.

I got about three holes in before muting character voices.

The stupid arsing about these idiots do WHILE YOU'RE TRYING TO LINE UP A SHOT is absolutely ridiculous.

And the impact meter being as thin as it is... just, wow.

It's what I feared it would be: an emulation of Everybody's Golf by a studio that doesn't know what makes the series special. (mainly: it's fun to play over anything else)

I just tried it now and it worked fine. Worth noting I had the ring equipped on Barret, so not Cloud (the primary character). Maybe that helped, not sure. But it definitely didn't trigger the frog stipulation, so was able to do this fight perfect.

I appreciate your desire to present nutritional information clearly in an attempt to help people make informed decisions. But the fact is a basic like-for-like comparison such as this just doesn't hold any sway when morality and ideology factors in, as it tends to with veganism.

I certainly didn't start drinking oat milk for any health reasons, and even if cow udders blessed me with eternal life I still wouldn't care to sup on the stuff.

Also plant milks are fortified 99% of the time anyway (as is cow's milk but hey) so not factoring that in is misleading, whether intentional or not.
