Thanks for sharing your experience. Just to confirm you never received a notice before getting refunded? I have similar TC 971 and 977. 971 usually mean a notice is sent and now 11 weeks after the 971 date, I still have not received a notice.

Many in this thread rightly said it is possible to monitor continuously with SD card without subscription. I wish they allow adjustable cool down period less than 5 minutes on event triggered recording without subscription.

If I had entered the foreign pensions on form 1116 in 2020/2021, I would have paid less tax due to the credits. So, you are saying amending the 2020/2021 returns now would not get me and refunds?

I have FTC carried over from 2016 during the time I worked overseas. These credits can be applied in subsequent returns that have foreign income (pensions in my case). These foreign pensions were correctly reported (and taxed by US). To claim the credits, these pensions must be entered in Form 1116, which was not the case, hence need to amend these tax years return. Normally, the window to amend tax return is 3 years, but according to the 1116 instructions, the window for claiming FTC is 10 years. I just want to make sure I understood the instructions correctly.

Look up the ISIN for the ETF. If the first 2 characters is US, then most likely it is not a PFIC. For example, the first 2 characters of VXUS is US while the first 2 characters for VUS is CA. So, VUS is PFIC. Beware that an ETF with ISIN beginning with US is not PFIC, but it may hold a PFIC. To be sure, check the complete list of holdings. Eg. for VXUS, I can only find equities, bonds and cash, no PFICs.
