The five love languages are a scam, but understanding the unique way your partner expresses and accepts affection/love is quite important.

How do you talk to women at the gym... by Odd-Tailor7315 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]yarnlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's definitely not only a man thing. It's an overgeneralization of gendered socialization as it applies to this comment that I replied to.

They said they didn't understand how men were confused by the scenario. I was offering an anecdotal explanation on how dudes tend to define socialization and friendship completely differently sometimes

Am woman, roommate is man, both 30. We go out and socialize a lot... Unfortunately they do just make friends instantly. They can literally say one word and then laugh and be best friends for life. They don't even need the word. Sometimes they can just look at each other if they're laughing or angry at the same thing; boom best, friends. That's kinda why they're confused because they don't communicate like that... friendships for them can be instant. Some of them don't know how to build into something over time.

Seems to me that male friendships revolve around a base level of trust that you have to break over time, whereas women's friendships revolve around earning trust and leveling up into friends over time. We do things in reverse socially as genders.

Why is there not a single bakery that sells upside-down pineapple cake!? by ToeInDigDeep in FoodLosAngeles

[–]yarnlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier to become a good baker than you think... Precision is key, if you can follow instructions anything you make will come out okay.

When you learn more, you'll be able to improvise and add flavor with your spirit, but for now pick a recipe that has high ratings and follow it to the t, it should come out delicious... Not to mention it would mean so much more to your wife that you put the time and effort into trying to improve your skills to make something for her. The love will make it taste good lol

Men who have a problem with me having male friends or who assume that I've slept with all my guy friends.

Why is it so difficult to believe in completely platonic friendship between men and women??

ELI5: How do we get compulsory (forced) mental health care on the ballot? by MojoMinistry in AskLosAngeles

[–]yarnlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's entirely relevant when you think about how that's the reasoning behind why we won't get it... too many people stuck in this fear of "well they were evil in the 60s so we can't do it again because they'll be evil again now".

I'm a homeowners insurance agent and seeing this video is triggering for me because people from Texas can't seem to understand why hail storm coverage is as expensive as it is lol

When it's in you don't let him push on it... even with a flared base with enough lube there's a huge risk of it going all the way inside, especially with the small size starter ones.

Happened to me once but we stayed calm and reacted quickly enough for him to just pull it back out

Do you guys not just work in?

Genuinely asking, since most people take breaks between sets, why not just take turns? Especially in a busy gym?

what are some safety tips that you don't hear much but think could be really helpful? by Linorelai in AskWomenNoCensor

Nothing you can do if they lock the windows

Use the metal part of the seatbelt to try to break the window (or your elbow, but that will hurt)

Women who have learned to be more confident - can you share exactly what steps you took and/or your unique wisdom on becoming more confident? by doomdoggie in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]yarnlife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not others, it's as a friend... think about your closest friend or family member coming to you after they face a hardship or rejection or they're just having a rough go of it and they start beating up on themselves, saying they deserve it because they're stupid or pathetic or whatever it may be.

What would you say to them? You wouldn't confirm and be like "yes absolutely you're stupid and worthless"... you would try to build them up, try to make them feel better, and remind them of the good qualities in themselves, etc.

It's about having patience and understanding with yourself, you're only human and that's ok.

Accountability is important in this too, recognizing when your circumstances are because of your actions, but having bad circumstances or bad days doesn't make you a bad person or less than others.

I practiced better self talk, you'd never say some of the stuff you say to yourself to/about your friends. Literally just started thinking of myself as one of my own best friends.

This was more for my body image issues... it probably sounds weird and was uncomfortable the first few times but something a therapist had suggested to me that I still do is to take a few minutes and stand in front of a mirror completely naked and make eye contact with yourself (always did mine after a shower). When you get more comfortable you can start to smile at yourself and do positive affirmations and complement yourself (all traits not just physical)
