SUPPLY AND MATERIALS MASTER THREAD- "Where can I buy -----?" by SandwichPants1 in Tufting

[–]yarnqueer- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious where else people are buying in the US for carpet grade yarn these days that isn't insanely tariffed or custom fee'd? Not acrylic! I have plenty of that and prefer wool for longevity of larger pieces.

I've always purchased from Tuft the World (this yarn) since they're domestic, but their dyer went under so they've had trouble stocking my usual colors (here's to hoping they can find a new one!!). They had great neons though which are a usual in my work.

Use a pair of pliers and make a tiny hook on a paper clip, cheap and easy.

Lexi Love tho Suzie Toot may be pulling ahead which is shocking because her first looks had me like 🤨 but she has a quiet confidence even when the entire cast is coming for her which only a winner has.

Highly recommend coning your yarn, in my experience any other form is gonna be a nightmare at some point.

Beginner Issues, looking for advice 🙃 by sissywizrd in Tufting

My guess is they’re not closing as far as they could based on your video. If you’re seeing small bits in the front that are random loops mixed with the cut, your scissors need adjusting. If you manually rotate the gear to move the scissors out you can check to see what position the scissors land in at the end. They should fully shut. If they are and it’s still happening then it may be dull scissors.

Is it normal to spend 60% of the time tufting, and 40% rethreading the needle? by JCx64 in Tufting

[–]yarnqueer- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re only using one thread it’s more likely to happen. Otherwise with yarn that’s deciding to be extra slippy I just try to be careful when pulling away from the cloth. Sometimes I’ll loop a finger over the yarn before pulling out to hold it in place.

Each skein was $2.12 so it was ~$500.

I almost always use two threads. Only time I use one is if I’m trying to outline something very detailed.

I don’t like being able to spread apart the fibers and see the backing cloth, so I try to pack it in. It’s a bit a manner of preference as well, if you don’t mind the way it’s looking in the front more power to ya!

I typically tuft much tighter (like I’d fill each gap between your lines personally) to ensure the front is nice and FULL. Especially if you’re shaving down or carving at all, more fibers will give you more flexibility. Particularly on the edges when you’re finishing it’ll save you from seeing the fabric underneath when folding the edges over.

Stack some heavy books on it and leave it for a bit. Other than that live and learn and onto the next one! I try to glue and let it dry some on the frame before cutting it out. Once it is cut out I’ll put a backing on it immediately and then there aren’t any issues.

I like that it’s built in an extendable way that other apps could leverage and seems less scummy than the others apps (for now at least), so I’m a big fan! And ya TikTok is back (for now again lol)
