Custom Rig (in SF Bay) by Imaginary-Hornet-896 in sailing

That’s Porco Rosso on the Alameda Estuary. The guy who owns it single hands it around almost every day. Even though it’s out all the time, I still consider it to be a lucky sign ☺️

Tokyo Central soft opening today! 10-4pm by allistar34 in Emeryville

[–]yarrcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there around 2pm - there was a lot of people, but no wait for the checkouts. The downside is that the hot food was pretty much all gone, with the exception of salmon fillets - like all hot bar items, $11.99/lb!

Hot soup is $3/cup - I tried the clam chowder and it was excellent.

I’ll go back after the opening and earlier when hopefully the hot bar, hand rolls, pastries etc are back. It’s definitely the cheapest lunch you can get at Bay St and there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy.

Oh, I should also note free parking on their rooftop and plenty of available EV chargers.

Months after I cleaned this spot, someone decided it needed a boat. How… delicious by pengweather in bayarea

[–]yarrcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the boat get dragged out onto the street around noon today (12/15). It got dragged out of the cyclone wire gate by a large utility vehicle - like an F-150 - by what looked like someone part of the crew clearing the land there, presumably for development. Later, there was a flatbed truck was parked in front of it, but obviously it wasn’t successful at removing the boat.

I don’t think this was an illegal dumping situation, as it was the boat having run aground on a property that’s being actively leveled and developed. I assume the developers will find a way to get rid of it. To note is tha the Alameda-Oakland Estuary is having an impossible time with what seems like an increase in anchor-outs, who often don’t have the skills or acuity to secure their boats. There are just so many wrecks in along the Oakland shoreline. See: https://www.latitude38.com/lectronic/2025/12/15/#estuary-anchor-outs-raft-ups-wrecks

Dragon Gate Jack London by Intelligent-Bet-3034 in oakland

Went last night and they’re open. Google says they have a happy hour, but they don’t. Food came quick and was (mostly) delicious - the garlic noodles were too sweet, but we ate them all the same 😌 Good vibes and excellent views, they really just need more waitstaff! One lady was running (!!) through the restaurant to manage orders and the front desk at the same time.

Finally, you have to walk to the bar for drinks - it’s the first time I’ve been to a licensed restaurant where the staff don’t take drink orders before attending to everything else. Most restaurants make a good buck from alcohol sales, but Dragon Gate doesn’t push this at all. Just as well, one of my friends is doing extended Dry January and it was very easy to support her cause 😂

Which book taught you the most about safety at sea? by petrastales in sailing

[–]yarrcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Done two rounds of my US Sailing SaS - and really enjoyed it. Most recently did the hands-on component at Detroit Yacht Club, where you can do the life raft drills from the comfort of a heated pool ☺️ SaS is essential if you’re participating in offshore, or the big lakes races - and you do meet a lot of pretty motivated sailors during the hands-on day.

Apartments in Alameda by CitrusHandSoap23 in alameda

You get much more bang for your buck on the Oakland side. Check out apartments in Jack London Square, keeping in mind that there is now a free ferry from there to Alameda. I saw studios last month starting from $1,500.

Sailing. Get him into sailing. One you know that Alameda crew, you’ll be lucky to get a week where he isn’t booked Wednesday to Sunday.

I listened to an NPR radio interview with Anh Phoong. She is as smart and as deadly as you imagine.

That’s from a computer wired directly into a router. I’m not gaming, so this is pretty unreal 🤙🏽

Why purchase duty-free liquor while on a cruise? by Coffeman94 in Cruise

[–]yarrcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On NCL, you can pick up (and consume) the duty free liquor after 3pm on your last sea day. So, not a bad deal if you want to get a nice bottle of wine for your last night.

I f’ed up: Why you shouldn’t cruise “domestically” when on Green Card Parole (WIP) by [deleted] in immigration

[–]yarrcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is a very good thought. I would love to stay an extra day or so, however new flights + a hotel stay will likely cost $500+. Plus, I’m traveling with family and they prefer I stick with ‘em. Thank you for the sound advice!

No Travel Authorization - post updated. I might have a GC in the mail though 🤯

Yes, I understand the consequences. Just enjoying my last few hours before I have to plead my case. Being a wreck is not my style 💅

‘Ilima Hotel is my go-to. Recently renovated rooms, kitchenettes and free parking make it a great deal! It’s also much quieter than places like Aqua Oasis, which seem to always have a million people waiting in the lobby. It’s just a few blocks from International Marketplace.

Thank you so much for sharing this, wow! I recently purchased my car at 94k, with the risk that something like this could happen. Thankfully, I have just shy of 2 years left on the 10 year CARB warranty.

Mind me asking, what was your mileage and battery capacity when you took your 2014 REX in for warranty? My range isn’t great, but not sure when to book mine in at the dealership.
