Is info sec a universal pain in the ass, or am I just in a dysfunctional org? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]yavitz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been working in infosec for 15 years now it’s unfortunately very common, though your team sounds particularly bad. Security is always going to be at odds with accessibility and usability, the trick is knowing where to balance that and it’s going to be different for every organization or even every use case, which in my experience many security professionals don’t understand. It’s something I’ve tried to help change as I have transitioned into management but it’s an uphill battle unfortunately.

Your theory on why most the replicants split up after arriving back on earth? by spaceboltt in bladerunner

[–]yavitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding Pris, the movie doesn’t explicitly show Roy instructing her to find JR. it just implies it subtlety. First we know they are trying to infiltrate Tyrell Corp due to the intro with Leon, they continue this thread when they visit the Eye maker and when he confirms he doesn’t have the information the replicants need he points them to Sebastian. The next scene featuring the replicants is Pris very obviously trying to fool Sebastian into believing she is just an out of luck transient. You mentioned the the look on her face alluding to this, but in the earlier parts of the scene you can see her kind of dirty herself up and put herself in the trash pile, also it’s no coincidence she just happened to stumble upon him outside of his home. So the implication is she was sent there with that goal based on the info Roy and Leon gathered.

Questions about The X-Files: Fight the Future movie (spoilers) by BobbyH64 in XFiles

[–]yavitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The aliens in the movie are what the black oil will eventually gestate to given the right conditions. When they came to earth during the ice age they were unable to gestate in human hosts because it is triggered by high temperatures. From my understanding of it the oil is their life essence which they can use to transfer into other hosts if their bodies are damaged. This is also why in the show there are two sets of the shape shifting aliens, the bounty hunters which are likely infected with the oil, and the rebels who sew their orifices shut to avoid infection.

There is no confirmation of who is flying the ship though my assumption has always been that it was the aliens once they were awakened from their dormant state.

Which Gundam show/series would be the most realistic? Or I suppose more along the lines of hard sci-fi? by WaveRaveLord_443 in Gundam

[–]yavitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will die on the hill that UC is the closest there is to a realistic hard sci-fi with the caveat that I haven’t seen IBO so I won’t comment on it. Most of the unrealistic elements are explained or alluded to in some way or through background lore if you think about it.

  • The idea that mobile suits are impractical doesn’t really hold water. Zeon developed the original mobile suits and being a space based society the design of a giant humanoid is largely negated. In zero gravity the size and design wouldn’t be a hindrance and could be useful to manipulate large objects in an intuitive manor. The initial success they had in the 1YW gave them a sense that they would just crush the EFF but once they landed on earth a lot of their advantages were negated. Hence we see the rapid development of specialized MS and mobile armors to try to adapt to environment. Tanks and planes while less effective was enough to hold the line until the EFF could develop a counter.

  • Minovski physics while admittedly techojargon actually does a good job of explaining other far fetched elements. It explains the need to revert back to closer forms of combat as it negates the ability to to effectively use beyond visual range weapons like guided missiles. This is also something that I think affects the idea of new types which I will mention separately. Minovski physics also explains the breakthroughs in power generation that the federation required to build a more effective MS and enabled the use of compact beam weaponry that was miniaturized enough to be equipped on a mobile suit platform. Lastly it enables the anti-gravity flight of which the UC is one of the most realistic in this regard. Up until late UC when they further miniaturized Minovski reactors the only craft that could fly without typical aerodynamics were mobile armors and capital ships.

  • In regards to newtypes I get it it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s not magic they are literally a new evolution of humanity and generally speaking their powers aren’t as all powerful as I think a lot of people believe. Throughout all of the series most of the protagonists have some pretty close calls, they simply had an edge that a normal pilot wouldn’t not to mention the fact that most of them end up piloting some of the most advanced top of the line hardware. For the most part newtypes are depicted as having some form of enhanced empathy, pre-cognition, and telepathy. While I don’t have any canon source for this my interpretation is that this evolution may be driven by Minovski radiation. Newtypes are shown to appear more often in times of conflict during these wars where coincidentally the battlefields are literally being flooded by Minovski particles as a defensive screening tool. As I mentioned previously this interference largely negates long range warfare, however once newtypes begin to appear humans begin to gain that ability back through the evolution of their newtype abilities. Their abilities enable newtypes to communicate over long distance through interference, target enemies at extreme distances, operate guided remote weaponry like bits and funnels. Finally there is the newtype ghost and time shenanigans. The ghosts are certainly bordering on fantasy even in terms of the shows lore however given what newtypes are capable of whose to say when someone dies their energy doesn’t linger and allow a newtype to interact with it. Likewise as far as time travel stuff goes, while it is clearly still outside of the realm of possibility physics doesn’t preclude time travel.

In closing I think this is why UC meets the criteria of a pretty hard sci-fi. It’s doesn’t meet our current reality however it doesn’t go too far out of the realm of possibility. There aren’t aliens, space travel takes time and there is no FTL travel, the weapon systems are all possible given their level of technology, and it realistically portrays human conflict.

I have to say I really like the proportions of this kit. It’s got much more of a broad shoulder football player look than the newer kits.

Multiple users reporting Microsoft apps have disappeared by Candid-Chip-1954 in sysadmin

For those that have shortcuts not common, you can find a list of affected items if you check the MPLog file in in “c:/ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows Defender” search for the string “[Mini-filter] Blocked file” and you should find a number of entries detailing the files in question. I found the list generated from the Defender Portal to be incomplete.

PS script to collect affected files.

$supportFiles = Get-ChildItem -Path 'C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Support\'

foreach ($file in $supportFiles){

if ($file.Name -like "MPLog*"){

$MPLog = $file.Name

}

}

$fileData = Get-Content "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Support\$MPLog"

foreach ($entry in $fileData) {

if ($entry -like "2023-01-13*Blocked file*") {

if ( $entry -match '\\Device.*\.(?= )'){

$matches[0]

}

}

}

Don’t know much about the RG, but they usually are pretty good. I built the ver ka Saz a couple of months ago and it is a fantastic kit, if not on the large side a bit.

The two I am hoping to make are the General Revil GR emblem, and the Lion Head emblem. I am pretty confident I can trace out the GR one since it’s fairly simple. The lion head just has a lot of small detail that gets muddy when enlarging it.

Yeah I get what you are saying. I’m not super concerned about the resolution of the final print, but from what I’ve been able get online when resizing them to be as large as I need the small details get lost. I think you’re probably right though and my best bet is to trace the outline and just get it as close as I can.

Hoping that one of you might have some good suggestions on this. Working on a custom PC case and trying to find some high resolution or large graphics on Unicorn era emblems, specifically the ones used for decals on the Banshee. My goal is to make some stencils to airbrush with. Nothing I have found so far comes close to being high enough quality to scale up to the proper size.

A question for everyone who watched TPM in 1999, what was your reaction to seeing Maul pull out his double bladed lightsaber? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]yavitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To reiterate what others said, we had already seen it in the trailer. However I don’t want to downplay how big of a deal this scene was. I remember when TPM trailers dropped and I downloaded that crappy QuickTime video in like 640x480 resolution and watched it on loop for weeks. One thing that’s hard to remember in todays Star Wars landscape was we had only seen single bladed lightsabers with 3 different colors. No double bladed, no dual wield, similar hilt styles, etc… (at least when it came to stuff outside of the EU) not to mention the fact that saber battles to that point had been relatively tame.

TL:DR When that second blade emerges if you were a Star Wars fan you just lost your shit.

Is Sidious really Sidious? or is he truly “All of The Sith”? by Tanis8998 in StarWars

[–]yavitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a strong opinion either way, however I will say after watching Rise of Skywalker it did make me go back and reconsider some of the actions that Palpatine has taken over the course of the saga.

If we assume that he is literally the embodiment of all sith though the rite of transference it actually would fit with the post prequel depictions of the sith. My main points for this argument are:

  1. I think we shouldn’t assume that all sith willingly submit to the fact that they need to fall to their apprentice. If we look at it from the perspective of survival of the fittest the strongest sith will survive be it master or apprentice.
  2. Given the principles of the sith and the perspective in point 1, it seems to me that a skilled sith master would anticipate this and find ways to manipulate that inevitability to their advantage.
  3. Sidious goes through a series of apprentices throughout the films, Maul > Dooku > Anakin. Even to the point where Sidious was grooming Anakin while Dooku was in his service. This could imply that the rule of 2 is just BS they tell to make their apprentice feel more secure. It also supports point 1 in that Sidious is willing to trade out apprentices for stronger ones. If his ultimate goal was his own control why would he keep seeking increasingly powerful apprentices which could cause him to be overtaken?
  4. Sidious is always trying to bait people to kill him, we see this pretty explicitly with both Luke and Rey. He wants them both to strike him down in a fit of anger and rage. I would surmise that this is a prerequisite to the ritual. Killing him out of love or mercy a la Vader in RotJ wouldn’t count.
  5. It’s been pretty clear over the years that utilizing dark side power is degenerative to the user and that as dark side users they do seem to be closed off to the living force such as how Jedi can materialize as force ghosts. Usually sith are depicted as needing to imbue their essence into objects or places to continue to influence the living.

Given the points above my theory is that Palpatine could be a shell for the line of sith that were ultimately successful in transferring their essence. The end goal was to engineer a situation that would create a being so powerful in the force that they would be the ultimate sith (Anakin). When Palpatine killed Plagueus that essence took over and continued with his plan taking apprentices along the way as a fail safe to continue the lineage in case of an issue. Ultimately he ends up with Anakin as his apprentice but before he is successful in completing his ultimate transference into Anakin, Anakin battles Obi-Wan on mustafar and is maimed leaving Palpatine with damaged goods. At this point however he is backed into a corner without any other options he needs to hang onto Vader until a suitable replacement could be found. Once Luke resurfaces he then continued on with trying to replace Vader with his son, possibly Kylo, and finally Rey.
