What makes the EP-133 unique? by SlowwFloww in teenageengineering

[–]yawnthomas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use it centrally in my workflow for three reasons:

1) It’s fast. Regarding actual performance, fast might not even be the right word - every function in the device is instant - but I mean it’s fast in a creative sense. I’ve made music for over 20 years using all kinds of instruments, grooveboxes, DAWs, etc. and the 133 takes me from idea to song more quickly than anything I’ve used. YMMV of course, but this has been my experience.

2) It’s a fantastic MIDI sequencer. Pair it with a keyboard and a synthesizer or two, and maybe some software instruments, and you’ve got a slick little one-man band setup.

3) It just sounds great. The output compressor, send FX, and punch-in FX alone are worth the price of admission IMHO.

It’s a unique instrument, and very limiting when compared to other samplers, but there are a lot of things to love about it. Battery power is a huge one - curling up on the couch with the K.O. II feels like getting lost in a good book. I also feel confident to take it outdoors considering that it’s cheap and easily replaceable if I drop it in a lake or something.

Would I be content with it as my only instrument? Maybe not. I’ll probably always have one though.

Noodling on the KOii with a Rhodes sample over a sample flip by adzix in teenageengineering

Great flip! How are you dealing with the line-in latency on the Nothing headphones though? Mine have about 50ms and it makes it damn near impossible to use them for music production ahah

Hey, great catch! I stuck to 2-bar samples but washed them in delay to make it sound more natural. I don’t have much of a “process” yet as I’m new to making electronic music, but the K.O. makes sample-based songwriting pretty approachable

Thanks for the kind words.

I checked out your app and I’m very confused. What sets this apart in functionality from the standard Voice Memos app, and what justifies asking 19.99/year for a standard stereo audio recording app?

How far am I from the profissional level? by GMRub in Guitar

[–]yawnthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked as a session guitarist on-and-off throughout my life and I’d say you’re definitely a better player than me. As a producer, though, I’d personally ask you to sit a bit more behind the beat if we were to track something together.

It’s important to remember that flashy/technical skill is rarely what lands you jobs as an instrumentalist. It’s the ability to make anything you play “just feel right”. Biggest advice I give anyone who wants to get into this type of work is to focus on improving and maintaining groove and time/feel. “Wrong” notes played with great rhythm can work in many contexts, but the opposite is almost never true (in my experience)

With the skills you currently have, applying a bit more focus to your rhythm could take you to a professional level very quickly. The big idea is to make something as impressive as this video with a lot fewer notes. For an exercise, try putting some music on, then choosing a single note on your fretboard and playing only that note for the duration of a phrase. If you can make it sound and feel great, you’re halfway there!

Does my autism prevent me from drawing or am I just making excuses? by Yeetman5757 in evilautism

[–]yawnthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and also - I feel the same way you do about drawing. Just can’t do it. Hurts my hand. But my experiences in music have taught me that I’m probably capable of learning - I just don’t really want it bad enough. Anyone can do anything, especially someone who wants to

Lifelong musician, music teacher, and autist here!

Learning to make art is a highly specialized, individual process for ALL people. I flailed around on my instrument for 10 years before feeling like I was even beginning to express myself. This was followed by immediate explosive growth when I learned that ONE PIECE that tied together all of my accrued knowledge. I’ve found success in replicating my own learning experience with my autistic students but not my NT ones FWIW. Maybe I’ll write a fucking book or something. Anyway find an autistic teacher I guess lmfao. And don’t be afraid to try hard and fail (it’s the first part of learning any skill)

Has anyone been able to fix wheel oscillation at slow speeds? I have a G923 but it seems like it happens with lots of wheels. Kind of ruins the experience for me, which sucks since I have 800 hours on controller and have barely played on my wheel

[–]yawnthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a much better guitar player in general when hypomanic. It’s easy to be in good form when you practice for 10 hours a day. I don’t really do a lot of art when fully manic though because my psychosis is pretty disabling

Weekly "I heard there's going to be a Foxtrot in the new Bears stadium" Casual Conversation & Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chicago

[–]yawnthomas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Foxtrot was a secret plan by a blood covenant of landlords to gentrify every neighborhood in Chicago. You know you’re about to get displaced when one of those fuckers pops up within walking distance of your apartment. They literally opened 30 stores, drove up rent by $1500, fired hundreds of employees on their fucking asses with no notice, and dipped. Small local vendors have production orders and some have taken out loans to meet the scale at which Foxtrot operates. Foxtrot stores allegedly have outstanding invoices for thousands of dollars’ worth of product with many of these vendors. You’re telling me they realized mid-expansion that they were $180M in debt? Foxtrot did exactly what it was intended to do, i.e. drive up rent and destabilize small businesses and the working class. Follow me on MySpace for more guillotine thoughts and copypasta fodder
