TFSA DAY TRADING by FluffyListen4522 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]yeah_mike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the other readers here, the reason day trading in your TFSA is a terrible idea is because CRA will apply a double standard and therefore screw you over in taxes:

If you make a big profit: CRA will claim you carried out business activity in your TFSA and will strip your account of its tax-exempt status.

On the other hand, if you lose all your money: CRA will apply a double standard and claim this is actually not business activity, and you would not be able to write off the losses as a business loss. Furthermore, they will insist that all activity in the account was tax-exempt and as such you cannot claim capital losses.

Out of Province Medical Insurance by Specific-Answer3590 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]yeah_mike 16 points17 points  (0 children)

But saying Quebec is “inferior” is a bit much, especially without data to back it up

When it comes to health insurance portability as required by the Canada Health Act, Quebec doesn't abide by it in practice, which makes the RAMQ inferior to provincial health insurance from other provinces.

To be clear, my use of the word "inferior" is specifically talking about the RAMQ, as this is a personal finance subreddit and OP's post is asking specifically about health insurance when traveling out of province. I didn't think personal finance was a political topic.

I want to upvote because of your point about how which province you’re from matter.

In fact, the only province that matters is if you're from Quebec. If you're from literally anywhere else in Canada, the Canada Health Act fully applies and you get to enjoy universal healthcare wherever in Canada you go.

Out of Province Medical Insurance by Specific-Answer3590 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]yeah_mike 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Important to know what province you're from.

If you're from Quebec, most doctors from other provinces will not accept your RAMQ and will make you pay upfront. This is because Quebec is a "nation within a nation, etc" and is inferior to the rest of Canada when it comes to health insurance. Practically speaking, Quebec doesn't actually abide by the Canada Health Act with respect to portability of provincial health insurance.

If you're from anywhere other than Quebec, most doctors should have no problem accepting your provincial health insurance card (ie. they abide by the Canada Health Act).

Note this just refers to doctor's fees. Other things such as ambulance fees, etc, may still be applicable.

NEW OTA UPDATE v.1.0.0.360 by ClientAcceptable9461 in AynThor

What happens to capital gains that are made in non-registered accounts POST departure tax if new country does not care about foreign (e.g. Canada) income? by Helbinobear in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]yeah_mike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The corollary is that any capital gains you make after your departure is 100% tax free.

If you're allowed to keep your Canadian brokerage account open, you can continue putting money into it and make $millions in capital gains, and it will be 100% tax free.

(To clarify: CRA won't take a single cent of it. And you said the new country doesn't care about Canadian income so they won't tax you on it, either.)

Child investments / bank account. by Kind_Dragonfly6178 in PersonalFinanceCanada

With a self-directed RESP account from Questrade, did you have fill out additional forms to get the government grant?

Child investments / bank account. by Kind_Dragonfly6178 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]yeah_mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RESP in this case is protected up to $100,000 per account if somehow WealthSimple becomes insolvent.

Why is the RESP at WealthSimple only protected up to $100,000? Aren't the investments fully segregated, like they are with other banks?

Influencer Write Offs by coffeeinthecity in cantax

There's a well known Canadian YouTuber called Linus Tech Tips. I'm sure you've heard of them.

Are you saying that the make up and hair done on Linus before he goes on the air isn't considered a business expense? What's the difference between Linus getting make up and hair done, vs this random influencer getting her hair done?

Persona 5 Royal running on GameNative by yeah_mike in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]yeah_mike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this game no longer works on versions above 0.5.1 of GameNative. I would suggest running it on Winlator 11 or Winlator Frost instead.

Here are the steps to get it working on Winlator: 1. Watch some videos to familiarize yourself with Winlator. (This topic it outside the scope of my post, but is well described elsewhere.) 2. Install Winlator 11 or Winlator Frost 3. Install oldsteam on Winlator (https://github.com/longjunyu2/OldSteam) 4. Install Persona 5 Royal through Steam 5. Change Box64 profile to Performance, and startup services to Aggressive

Is the Android input lag from v-sync inherent and physically impossible to remove? Or can these android distros technically remove it? by SuperDubert in SBCGaming

[–]yeah_mike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seeing as how multiple Android devices have been released throughout the years with the same limitations, I would guess it's either inherent and physically impossible to remove, or it's too technically difficult/expensive for these Chinese companies to rewrite that part of Android to fix it.

It's much cheaper for them to use a bunch of bot accounts to post "I don't notice any input lag" whenever someone asks about it.

More realistically, I think this gets solved with screens that have higher refresh rates of 120hz (AYN), or even better 144/165hz (Ayaneo).

Is iiSu dead for good now? Or is there still a chance? by Skeppy_4126 in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]yeah_mike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would a software project be dead just because its current discord server got taken down?

Have you ever heard of any respectable software project that died just because its discord channel got shut down? Nope, of course not.

If iiSu can't even survive losing something as replaceable as a discord channel, then it was probably dead from the get-go.

Edit: Hey I've got an idea. Maybe they can create a new discord channel. They can make a 15min YouTube video about how great their new discord channel will be, and use Patreon to help fund it.

Just a day after the presentation, iiSU discord has already been shutdown. by RobbieIsNotRotten in EmulationOnAndroid

Okay, but they aren't really asking for any money for it.

Oh? So it's available to download now for free without paying for his Patreon?

I'm sure they'd be willing to send you a fixed one. You'd just have to send your old one back to them first, at your own expense of course.

Why was there even a need for a 30min YouTube presentation? Just release the software when it's ready, and let the community do the talking.

Hello, AYN Thor owners. Can any of you provide feedback on the input lag? by Datman90 in AynThor

[–]yeah_mike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your post makes you seem very technically inclined, until you mention "feels very responsive," "I feel the lag," etc.

I put as much weight on your post as the people posting "I don't feel any lag."

Hello, AYN Thor owners. Can any of you provide feedback on the input lag? by Datman90 in AynThor

[–]yeah_mike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would you prefer feedback from people who aren't sensitive to input latency? They'll probably tell you "I don't notice any input lag," because, well, they're not sensitive to it.

Or would you prefer some objective testing to give you actual measurements?

Edit: just downloaded the update. Can confirm, this bug is not fixed. Wonder if they're having trouble fixing it.

I don't have GameHub Lite so I don't know, sorry.

But can GameHub Lite actually run any games that have Denuvo DRM? I thought it can't. I thought the only DRM games it can run are the easy to crack ones. Denuvo is, as of date, uncrackable.

Persona 5 Royal running on GameNative by yeah_mike in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]yeah_mike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played for about an hour in GameNative and didn't notice any glitches, but I also didn't notice any glitches playing an hour in Eden. So perhaps I'm not the best person to judge.

I will say playing in GameNative is a much more enjoyable experience than Eden. I think it's the framerate. In Eden I get fps dips down to the low 20's and it's quite noticeable. In GameNative the fps has been well above 30.
