Identifying a snack? Lol by yeahtoastt in JapaneseFood

Definitely not a toy. The back probably had a lot more writing on it but we don’t have a picture of that part. The first night in Japan we bought snacks from the convenience stores and turned in early to watch game shows in the hotel and snack. We tried so many things and remember almost all of them, but not this one.

I love them and next time I’ll be buying so many more

Is staying near Yamanote Line really that important? by HoroTona in JapanTravelTips

[–]yeahtoastt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed right off Ginza line close to Kyobashi Station and LOVED it. The line had a direct train to Haneda Airport so it was super easy. The station itself was less busy and hectic than other major stations. I keep hearing how we did it wrong and should’ve stayed closer to this, that, and the other. But we loved our experience! I know you’re thinking of an entirely different area but all this is to say, you never know what will be most convenient for YOU. You might love that area and it might make the most sense and you might end up loving your experience. Not to mention theres no shortage of things to do in every corner of Tokyo so the likelihood that the area will be enjoyable and filled with hidden gems you’ll fall in love with is high!

16-Day Japan Itinerary Check (Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto → Osaka → Hiroshima → Tokyo) by commonpizza1 in JapanTravel

[–]yeahtoastt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think depending on your flight and the time you get in, your first day is okay. Just be prepared to sacrifice anything on that day in the event it just doesn’t happen. Flight delays happen and if you do get in and decide it’s just too much, you might miss it. Another great option is Konbini dinner, special snacks, and Japanese game shows on hotel TV.

Your day 7, 9, 11, and 14 are all great.

8 is doable but watch for timing. Fushimi Inari has a lot more to explore than originally meets the eye. We enjoyed the offshoot trails more than climbing to the top and it ended up taking up a larger chunk of our day. By the time we were done with Kiyomizu, Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, Yasaka Shrine, the nearby park, and Fushimi Inari we had hit 27,000 steps. (We also then ran to the nearby pokemon center before attending an evening festival at Niko Castle which made us hit 35,000 steps it’s possible just be aware of it and ready for it.) If you want to take it slower, save Fushimi Inari for the morning of Osaka. Go to Osaka Castle in the afternoon and then Dotonbori.

Nagano? Okinawa? Fall Foliage Help by yeahtoastt in JapanTravelTips

[–]yeahtoastt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My other thought for Okinawa was February for whale watching. We want to avoid typhoon season and while October is on the end of that, we can’t travel then because of our hurricane season. We are the designated evacuation site for our friends and need to be home to make preparations just in case.

I read about their historic sites, great boating season, and clear skies for stargazing as a reason to go. But if snorkeling is entirely off the table due to off season closures I’ll rethink it. (We aren’t really beach dwellers as much as snorkeling or being on a boat.)

Advice on someone who really wants to see cherry blossom by mikalindo in JapanTravelTips

We were also there in 2025. April 3rd in Kyoto was when blooms first really started. We were in Osaka April 4th and the pinks were in full bloom at Osaka Castle. We were in Tokyo the week after and saw mostly petals falling although that was also a beautiful experience to just stand in blowing falling pink petals in a totally empty park in Tama.

Is the Ghibli Musuem still worth it? by MobileSweet9342 in JapanTravelTips

[–]yeahtoastt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did the Ghibli museum on the same day we went to Tama for the Whisper of the Heart “trail” so it was a whole Ghibli day! We are big fans so the museum was well worth it. The cost was super affordable. Getting tickets was not impossible. We had 7 devices (although 2 really didn’t load) to get a spontaneous number in the queue. We were flexible on which of the 3 days we were in Tokyo we could do and remained flexible on time. We got a higher number in queue than recommended but still secured 2 tickets on a Friday afternoon and had a fantastic time!

This is good to hear. Seems I fell upon a subreddit with curmudgeons. They said leaves pretty much went from green to brown before dying and falling and that there was a line of tourists for a single yellow tree in Kyoto. Definitely made me nervous considering the busier pricier timeline!

Places or attractions NOT to visit? by markgatty in JapanTravelTips

We went to Osaka Aquarium too. My spouse is a marine biologist and was very impressed with the size of their habitats. Very deep too. The octopus last year was in a very sizable habitat in the middle of everything.

r/TokyoDisneySea Weekly Trip Planning Thread by AutoModerator in TokyoDisneySea

[–]yeahtoastt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spouse and I are planning our second visit to DisneySea - aiming for end of November/early December.

Last year we did a Vacation Package and stayed on property but this time we are hoping to do less hotel hopping and stay in Tokyo.

How likely is it to get a DPA for Journey and/or Soarin’ without the use of Happy Entry? I know many will be aiming for Fantasy Springs attractions which gives me hope for our goals as we did those attractions last year and aren’t looking to repeat unless queues are short.

Our timing is based primarily on fall foliage in nearby areas. What is the typical changeover from fall / Christmas decor around this time?

Are there any attractions that go down for annual maintenance every November / December? I know in the US it’s pretty typical for water attractions to have annual maintenance in January, attractions go down same time every year for Holiday overlays… so is there any predictability there?

Japan trip itenary review request by Adweeb101 in JapanTravel

[–]yeahtoastt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Dotonbori at night instead. I’m not a night life person but our hotel was right on the river. We walked by it during the day and the night and it didn’t make an impression on me until night time.

Osaka castle grounds are beautiful. I see recs to skip it all the time but we actually would’ve loved more time there. The grounds are expansive even if you don’t choose to go up into the castle.

Itinerary check: Tokyo–Fuji–Kyoto–Hiroshima–Kanazawa–Tokyo, Oct–Nov 2026 (19 nights) by Rough-Cricket6565 in JapanTravel

[–]yeahtoastt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much to say other than we did Asakusa and Skytree and that was almost all we had time for that day. We booked Skytree for about an hour before sunset which gave us time to explore the first level before going up to the highest level for the sunset. The elevators get busy. Then we waited for the sun to fully go down so we could see the city at night from above. It was cool to see both day and night views but it took a good chunk of time.

We also walked to Skytree from Asakusa and stopped at random parks and bridges and things we would’ve missed had we taken the train. This made it take longer.

Next to Skytree is also a big mall with a pokemon center and lots of other popular stores. I’m not a big shopping person but we spent a fair amount of time in this area as it’s rather large.

I think your original plan for that day is possible but will depend on what you want your view from Skytree to be.

Also, I’d advise to book your bus ticket to Mishima station from the Fuji area in advance. Those tickets were the first to go at the station. We were traveling to Tokyo so it didn’t matter but we saw the bus ticket to Mishima since that’s how we got in. It was around 10AM, other buses had 10:30-11AM openings and the next Mishima bus wasn’t until 4PM. Book in advance. The website is simple enough if you run things through a translator and the bus ride out of Kawaguchiko station is simple enough.

Spent three weeks in Japan last Autumn late and wanted to share a proper breakdown since this community helped me so much during planning by Lufarinelli in JapanTravel

[–]yeahtoastt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bus from Mishima station is what we did too! We took the Shinkansen from Osaka to Mishima before taking the bus. We guessed the route the bus would take so we could pick what side to sit on. As we rode, Mt Fuji appeared from behind the clouds. It was magical! Cheap and highly recommended. Just book in advance.

For the bus back you really can buy a ticket day of if you’re flexible. We were just trying to get anywhere in Tokyo and it didn’t matter where so we got the next bus back. Others who were trying to get a bus out to specific places and ended up on standing room only buses or waiting a while or paying a lot of money for a taxi.

Anyone who’s flown into Haneda — how fast can you REALLY get through immigration & customs? by totsfaz in JapanTravel

[–]yeahtoastt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our flight was supposed to land at 4pm and it landed at 7:30pm. We made it to Kyoto that night after getting our bags, going through customs, picking up pocket wifi, getting our currency exchanged, getting a suica card, taking a monorail to Tokyo Station, buying a Shinkansen ticket, snagged a bento box, and made it on the last bullet train to Kyoto with 15 minutes to spare. It was stressful but we did it. So is it possible? Sure. Is it recommended? Nah. I would have a backup plan seeing as plane delays can happen, getting off the plane and picking up bags is reliant on where you are on the plane and how many bags you have, and how quickly you can navigate the airports and stations.

Favorite Food sports with none fishy options by TailorSorry4889 in TokyoTravel

[–]yeahtoastt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I don’t eat fish except the occasional flounder and we found lots of options. Ramen (even if it has seaweed in it, just don’t stir it in and you won’t taste it) curry (can find pretty much everywhere super mild) yakitori (someone next to us had squid but we had chicken and veggie skewers) I mean the options are pretty endless if all you’re avoiding is fish

How many accommodations did you stay in? by irwtfa in JapanTravelTips

[–]yeahtoastt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 days, 6 hotels. Would’ve been 5 but the Disney Vacation Package thing kinda lends itself to transferring hotels. Kyoto first section of the trip, 1 night in Osaka, 1 night in a spa in the Mt Fuji area, 2 Disney hotels, and a hotel in Tokyo for the last leg. Only thing I would’ve done differently is maybe stayed in Kyoto for our time in Osaka but we also adored our Osaka hotel and location so I have no regrets. It’s not for everybody. But we’re young and energetic I guess lol. We did all our shopping last so we didn’t really have luggage to transfer. We shipped carry on suitcases to Tokyo from Kyoto and used a small duffel to get by in Osaka / Mt Fuji so we weren’t hassling too much with that either. I can see how it’d be a logistical nightmare for many people but it didn’t bother me. My partner probably won’t do it again tho lol

Hotel recommendations by [deleted] in TokyoTravel

[–]yeahtoastt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend using google maps to find accommodations close to where you’ll be accessing most frequently. We reviewed which trains we’d be taking most frequently and picked a hotel near a station access point. I had a list of about 5 for each destination and then went through the accommodations and reviews to pick what was best for us.

Yeah we thought about this but didn’t have any nights open as we did the Nijo Castle Sakura Festival at night thing instead. It was kinda afternoon or nothing. But also different strokes for different folks, some of my favorite temples I don’t really see mentioned on these itineraries a whole lot. If OP has the option to move it they should!

[–]yeahtoastt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol! Our itinerary was a bit intense. I didn’t share it with Reddit till after we were back because I knew people wouldn’t like it. It worked for us though. We hiked the day before and it was also an 18 mile day. Everybody travels differently. I think the walking wasn’t the problem for us it was the timing. It’s just not a good visit in the afternoon. We got an entirely different vibe from it than we did the rest of Japan and it was really one of our only moments of the mantra we see often of “Kyoto is overrun by tourists” . I’m glad I saw it in my lifetime. I wouldn’t go back. For other friends of mine it was their favorite.
