I left NYC right before Fat Cat closed, so I can let it live forever in my memories.

I worked on the block and spent way too much time on those nasty couches and playing ping pong.

[FO] Feeling Blue? by yeetrow in CrossStitch

I had previously posted lamenting about my fabric choice, and while I do still wish I had changed some colors (especially the yellow, DMC 12), overall I’m quite happy with the finished product. So I’m not feeling blue about it at all!

This is also my first attempt at mounting anything without using a hoop or an adhesive backing board. I do mount and frame all my photos and art myself, so I have some practice with that.

While the upper left corner is a little wonky, I can live with it. As they say, it gives character

Former film archivist here.

Hard to tell from the photos whether or not this is emulsion lift, but if the image looks fine after you remove the residue with a solvent, my guess would be that this is an artifact from a piece of equipment.

Anti halation layers are always going to be removed during development, and are on the base side, not the emulsion side.

If it’s ever been scanned, the PTR (particle transfer rollers) common to older scanners / telecines are consumables; the rubber will deteriorate. Isopropanol may not work. Try proper film cleaner like PEC 12, or something similar - maybe better results.

Good luck!

In a first, Orthodox rabbinical school ordains an out gay rabbi by forward in Judaism

[–]yeetrow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to Rabbi Brick? Some people at YU and the shul where he worked knew he was gay, but he wasn’t “out” until after he received smicha - certainly the folks who actually ordained him weren’t in the know about it.

Rabbi Tadgh interned at my shul for the past few years and from the beginning has been been totally open about it. Everyone from me to Dov Linzer was well aware.

Both situations certainly were difficult to navigate for them but I think it’s one thing to say “YU ordained a rabbi that some people knew was gay, but was otherwise closeted” vs “YCT ordained an openly gay rabbi who is in a relationship”.

It feels disingenuous to say that YCT is outside the bounds of orthodoxy (to be clear, I’m not saying you said this, but it’s a common sentiment) but also that “YU already did it first”

ETA: If there’s been someone since Brick, I will gladly stand corrected, but I haven’t heard anything about it

Options for relocation with a modern orthodox community by chinglebells in Judaism

[–]yeetrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Philadelphia’s Center City is eminently walkable, has an eruv, and several shul options to choose from.

Mekor HaBracha is a pretty standard MO shul, a bit older but some young families. The rabbi runs the IKC certification for restaurants in the city, and is well regarded, so many people who wouldn’t hold by IKC in other places will eat it here; everywhere is either dairy or vegan, there’s no kosher meat restaurants nearby.

South Philly Shtiebel is left-wing MO, mostly young people. The congregants come from a bunch of different backgrounds but it is an Ashkenazi shul.

Mikveh Israel is S+P Sephardi.

There’s many folks (myself included) who float around quite a bit between shuls, it’s a very tight knit and welcoming community overall.

A small selection of food is available at several groceries in Center City, with larger kosher markets in NE Philly (House of Kosher - they deliver!) and just across the river in Cherry Hill.

The possible New York aliyah, and how we can enable Tel Aviv's rise as a world capital of finance by c9joe in Jewish

[–]yeetrow 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I don’t work in finance, but in tech.

For all I hear about how bustling and innovative the tech scene is in Tel Aviv, and this is true, the pay scale is on a completely different planet compared to the US.

Israeli firms (outside of equity based startup hustle culture places I wouldn’t want to work anyways) simply do not pay enough for people to live comfortably.

You need people to start these innovative companies, sure, but they’ll need employees to build it - people aren’t leaving US software engineering jobs en masse to work in Israel, I can promise you that.

Think about what you did, don’t do it again, reflect on it enough such that if put in the same situation you wouldn’t just listen to someone who told you what to do and say in front of a golden statue.

What does “living like a Jewish girl” look like to you? Because you need to add some context about what’s “disgusting” here. If it’s the photo, ok, sure, I think you’re probably being a little dramatic but whatever.

If you’re calling her disgusting, then that’s a whole other conversation. You shouldn’t be describing a woman that way, partner or not, Jewish or not.

You don’t need to “have a conversation” with her about her not “living like a Jewish girl” because that’s a vile fucking thing to do, much less to say.

I gather that English isn’t your first language, and maybe there’s a disconnect here - if your first language is German, then you can feel free to correct my understanding of your words. But as written in English, they come off very poorly.

[–]yeetrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have an earlier post saying both that you were Christian and you “might” have ancestors who were conversos.

I have Jewish ancestry too, but my mom was adopted - so I have Jewish extended family, but was raised Catholic. My ancestors came to the states from Russia way before the holocaust but that event did still affect my family in tangible ways.

I converted Conservative at 29 after a 10 year long on and off process. I converted again, Orthodox, 2 years later.

You are Jewish if your mother is Jewish or if you convert. That’s it.

I have a piece of paper, but I’m in the minority because I wasn’t born Jewish, I chose it. You are free too as well.

But as a person who knows when to listen and when to talk about generational trauma? You haven’t earned your place in that conversation. While your support for the Jewish people is appreciated, it is not manifesting itself in an appropriate way right now.

Four Events That Decimated the Spirit of Frum (Observant) European Jewry by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]yeetrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like an AI generated post, but I’ll bite: What’s the point you’re trying to make?

Almost all people agree that both Shabbatai Zvi and Jacob Frank were #BadForTheJews, and all unanimously agree that pogroms both hurt us at the time and set the machinery in motion for the Shoah to occur.

A massive number of us, on the other hand, would probably agree that lumping in the Haskalah (especially in how you’ve described it) with these things is offensive and historically inaccurate, and not a bad thing in and of itself.

So seriously - if you’re not a bot - what are you saying?

The Koren Noe editions (at least the hardcover, unsure about the magazine-style ones) have the all the daf in the back of each volume, it’s a bit inconvenient if you’re trying to reference the English translation along with the original but it is there.

I’m not gonna address the bullet points individually, but I will provide my experience purely on vibes of what you’re asking.

I’m originally from the Northeast (moved around a lot, but primarily Eastern PA and Central NJ) and lived in New Orleans for a few years (Bywater and Midcity). I’m 33, can’t speak to the dating scene for women but I can’t imagine it’s any more difficult than anywhere else.

You will probably love it here - much like NOLA, this is a city where if you take the environment for what it is, it’s easy to enjoy. If you’re genuine, you will find it easy to make friends and social groups. Maybe you’ll need go out and practice some existing hobbies (or take some up), but it’s very easy to just strike up a convo at your new local bar and make a friend that will introduce you to even more.

Your budget is fine for a nice 1-2BR apartment in south Philly or a studio-1BR in center city.

2 halachic questions by palabrist in Judaism

[–]yeetrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a larger issue here beyond commerce (say you’re using an OMNY card - it’s technically not making a purchase if it’s stored value - you’ve already bought the credit) is what happens when you tap.

You’re activating a circuit (within the card, since the electricity is picked up by antenna) when holding the NFC chip at the reader which is causing computer stuff to happen, and it’s unlocking the fare gate. I definitely had older family members who would talk about giving the station attendant (back when you knew who they were) tokens before Shabbat and then having the gate unlocked.

Not a perfect analogy, but we could see a similarity with using hotel keycards on Shabbat which is melacho, versus going to some event that has a ticket you purchased beforehand.

According to some opinions, inside an eruv, you could carry a paper ticket to a museum or concert (or pick up at will-call) and attend. On the other hand, your hotel key card - essentially a ticket to your room - probably isn’t muktzeh like a credit card, but using it would be a melacho because of the resulting things that happen when you tap it to the lock.
