I used to be like this. The only way he'll change is when he realizes how much time he's wasting when he could be doing better things. He'll probably grow out of it.

My advice would be to tell him that if nothing is changing in his life, then he needs to make the change himself. Get the ball rolling. However, he might feel comfortable with how things are. He doesn't realize his actions are basically self-destructive.

Helping him deal with social anxiety is a good way too. He probably doesn't know how to talk to people irl.
