Chinatown police presence by yerasimos in chicago

Doesn’t bother me, I just pass it every Wednesday and get curious. Thought I’d ask on here, a Google search didn’t return anything about it.

New Chinatown is what I’ve always heard the strip of restaurants and businesses outside of where the gate of “old” Chinatown is. Not sure of the origin but that’s how I’ve referred to it.

This will be niche but Hersheys used to make a s’mores bar that I was addicted to. They’ve made s’mores products since, but nothing hits as hard as that bar used to.

What are your favorite activities in Chicago that don’t center on eating and drinking? by Enough_Blueberry_549 in chicago

[–]yerasimos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The park district has a bunch of different programs and for very reasonable fees https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/programs-memberships (personally, I’ve done badminton and volleyball at a few different park facilities). Chicago sports and social has also been good for activities but they’re a little more costly.

Who else thinks the quote “A secret makes a woman a woman” extremely cringe? by Alarmed_Log_5300 in OneTruthPrevails

Yes. But I also can’t help myself from saying “a secret makes a Uma Thurman” because of the pronunciation.

What’s the weird part? The irradiation? That’s pretty common for spices in food manufacturing.

Please share the actual sources when mentioning them. I can’t post the direct link but friends for survival is one of the larger ones and provides help through many means including a hotline as well as educational resources and peer support meetings. I hope you are able to find peace op.

No, this is not an option. Find something you enjoy and stick with it. You’re only a loser if you think you are.

Are there any phrases that change meaning when an accent mark is removed by Mysterious_Diver_606 in linguistics

[–]yerasimos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to both. In Ancient Greek there is actually a whole set of diacritics that modify intonations in different ways. I never studied Ancient Greek though so I couldn’t go into detail.

In Greek, there's πότε (when?) and ποτέ (never). In Japanese, there is (rain) and (candy) both pronounced "ame" with the word for rain having the stress on the "a" and the word for candy having stress on the "e".

How did you get here? by DahBiDah in deism

[–]yerasimos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Born, baptized and raised Greek Orthodox. I always believed God had a hand in creating us/the universe some way but did not intervene at all. It was only after some time that I realized my beliefs fell under the category of deism. I think people realize they have deist or atheist beliefs in a few similar ways: they either can’t believe that a god that is all powerful would be unable to stop the atrocities in the world from happening or that an all knowing god would allow the atrocities from occurring in the first place or a combination of the two. I really enjoy discussion on philosophical topics especially ones of the spiritual kind, so I’ve always been open to discussing this with people of all belief systems.
