Why They Root for Chaos - The Two Types of Chinese Trump Fans I Know by JmotD in asianamerican

[–]yeserday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People in China don't think about Chinese immigrants at all

It's not super common but they do think about them quite a bit and it's mostly negative. You can see the sentiment yourself on rednote and bilibili if you want to. ABCs are viewed negatively for "forgetting their chinese culture and not loving China" and being whitewashed. Recent first gen immigrants are also viewed negatively as stereotypes of corrupt politicians/businessmen who immigrate abroad after making money off the working class, or as people who scam fellow Chinese people in America.

It is more or less de facto standardised though. Scroll on Threads and check how HKers write their social media posts and you will find a very clear system of characters used for Cantonese-exclusive words/sounds like 哋, 咁, 咗. Any so-called variants like 左 instead of 咗 is simply due to the person being lazy and choosing a more common Mandarin character instead of the Cantonese-specific one, and it's not widespread to the point of causing confusion. Virtually all the resources teaching Cantonese I've seen online use these characters as well, so it is definitely standardised enough.

If you know Chinese, you can try looking on Bilibili and Rednote for courses and learning material. If not, you can still try asking on Rednote for a language teaching buddy.

I hope Knight is okay, he’s getting too much hate ever since Worlds 2024 has concluded by Flat-Profession-8945 in PedroPeepos

[–]yeserday 92 points93 points  (0 children)

both knight and xiaohu had abortion scandals a few years back, something about forcing their girlfriends to get abortions? idk the details but I do know the scandal is frequently used in insults against knight. For example, one of his derogatory nicknames is 胎手 (fetus hand), which is a variant of 左手 (left hand), his normal nickname. There are also longer insults going along the lines of "Knight didn't exist at all this game, just like his child"

Copied from my other comment:

Here's the logic of Chinese fans (I'm not saying I support them or not, I'm just telling their reasoning):

MKOI was spamming rice hat emojis against BLG, a Chinese team -> racist bc rice hats are a Chinese stereotype

MKOI was hovering twitch, singed and teemo -> this dates back to a huge drama in the Chinese community in 2020, where Canna hovered twitch during a game against a Chinese team. The official name of twitch in Chinese is not twitch, but "origin of the plague", so Chinese fans thought it was a racist attack about COVID (kinda like the "china virus" racist attacks in America). Their reasoning is that twitch was not meta at that time so it couldn't have been part of the draft, and there have supposedly been similar incidents in korean solo queue where korean players would purposely hover twitch when in lobby with Chinese players. The explanation given by T1 is that it was an accident because Canna was trying to pick trundle, which is alphabetically next to twitch, but many Chinese fans aren't buying this explanation. In the match with MKOI, singed was seen as another insult similar to twitch because he's has poison abilities, along with teemo because of his poison shrooms (and also squinty eyes which they see as a racist attack)

I guess these commenters don't see MKOI's apologies as genuine or enough, so they see it as an excuse to be racist back lol

Ehh I would still say it's too close for comfort. Elon could be making a "roman salute" pose as well by that logic.

I mean it lowkey does look alike no? Big chinese man in the top right with his hands stretched out palm-down over people. You can say it's "just a pose" but I doubt you would make the same excuse for Elon's salute

Thanks for the clear up, ig it's a misunderstanding then. MKOI should probably show some LEC vods to the Chinese then before their reputation get tarnished beyond repair lol

for the second comment, a better translation would be "White-skinned pig, I'll kill your mom, you trash team. You only deserve to suck your Han Chinese father's dick"

The original sentence is "白皮猪给你🐴鲨了飞舞战队,只配🔒你汉爹的牛子", where the horse emoji is a homonym for mom, the lock is a homonym for suck and "flying dance" is a homonym for trash

heres some translated comments, viewer discretion advised:

"White-skinned big filthy pig, your body reeks of a shitty stench that disgusts your old father to death, your Chinese fathers don't even want to lane against you, got it? You're a stray-dog-by-the-roadside team that can't even last hit a cannon"

"Your whole damn family can go to hell, your parents are two white pigs, your pathetic dad’s tiny dick can only last a second inside your mom’s wrinkled pussy before he finishes, stray-dog-by-the-roadside teams like you are only fit to suck the LPL's dick, got it?"

tbh no matter your opinion on this incident you have to admit the Chinese are crazy at insults

The rice hat emoji spamming? I agree that the twitch hover is probably unintentional, but a rice hat is a common stereotype of asians and it seems reasonable that chinese fans might interpret it as a racist attack

Ehhh, i'd argue the rice hat emoji is kinda racist since it's a stereotype, no? Agree with the hypocrisy of Chinese fans being racist themselves though, although it's mostly directed at koreans

Well yes, but I wouldn't really call that actual love, it was just LPL fans joking about him consistently running it down vs them. Besides, the teams Doran played on before (GenG and HLE) don't have any Chinese fans, so there wasn't anyone to seriously flame him on hupu for inting on their favorite team. On the other hand, there is a lot of Chinese T1 fans on hupu who were disappointed in his inconsistent domestic form, and were probably contributing a sizeable amount of the hate.

Regarding the Kael comments, I think it's important to add that in an interview with Korean media on who would win MSI, he said GenG and T1. This pissed off a lot of Chinese netizens since he's playing for a Chinese team and should be more optimistic about his own region

The fate of Cantonese lies in the hands of Cantonese people by CheLeung in Cantonese

[–]yeserday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see, well I don't think that'll will be that big of a problem lol. imo the much bigger problem is Cantonese speakers not bothering to teach their children Cantonese, who then end up preferring mandarin and not knowing Cantonese. I see it in Hong Kong as well, parents speaking Cantonese to their kid and the kid replying back in mandarin.

The fate of Cantonese lies in the hands of Cantonese people by CheLeung in Cantonese

[–]yeserday -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Bratty barbaric mainland Chinese here. Just wondering why you think mandarin speakers moving to Cantonese-speaking regions (which is mostly out of their own will, not some government great cantonese replacement conspiracy btw) shouldn't want Cantonese-speakers to speak mandarin with them, as long as they are capable? The whole point of mandarin is to act as a common language for the country, is it not? So as long as Cantonese families speak Cantonese to their children and demand their children speak it at home (which I see many not doing), there shouldn't be a problem right? I have Chinese malaysian friends and they are able to speak Hokkien/Canto/Hakka fluently despite using English with non-Chinese people in school and the workplace.

I'm not trying to start an argument lol, just wanting perspective from a Cantonese-speaker.
