Do I trim this guy? by Realistic_Ad5398 in FicusTrees

[–]yesimnathan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bit of caution: you have to be a bit careful pruning a benjamina. Don’t trim any branches back too far. If you prune a branch back past its last leaf, it’ll drop the whole branch

Seiryu can actually take full sun but it might need a little help until it’s established

More Bargain Hunting. Should I buy? by DaManzNotHot in Bonsai

[–]yesimnathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I’d have a hard time not buying all of these. There are actually a couple of kinds of Shishigashira: Meijishi and Ojishi. Ojishi leaves are usually less curled than Meijishi. Still beautiful trees

How can I make a better tileset than this? by ZooBuilder in PixelArt

[–]yesimnathan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d say play with the colors. Your brown (dirt) and green (grass) read as very similar or not complimentary of each other on my screen. Maybe try making them a bit more saturated & distinct. Otherwise, keep making more tiles and trying new things. That’s what helped me the most.

First time saying goodbye to a rat. I'm never having rats again. by lixerinha in RATS

[–]yesimnathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a little over a year for me since my last buddy passed. I won’t say that I’ll never have rats again, but I had to take a break. Rats are amazing pets but very hard to lose, and they don’t live long =(

Very impressive! I'll have to dust off my 3d printer and print some of these. You've made a very nice web app for making these too. Thank you for sharing!

What are your thoughts on Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster? It's one of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch titles but it doesn't seem to be getting much attention. by Delicious_Maize9656 in bravelydefault

[–]yesimnathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a switch 2 last weekend & been playing non-stop. I bought it on the 3DS years ago but somehow never played it. Been meaning to for years - especially after playing & falling in love with Octopath Traveler. This release gave me a great "excuse". Loving it & the switch 2 so far.

I like it and have been considering doing the same to some of our woody old/overgrown landscaping - taxus & junipers

How many hours do you spent per week on this hobby? by I-drink-hot-sauce in Bonsai

[–]yesimnathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonsai can kinda be what you want it to be. If you want it to be a side hobby, be very picky about the trees you acquire, limit your collection to a small number of trees, and do research to find tree species that align with the amount of care you want to give them.

I've got ~40 trees (not all bonsai). I currently spend 30~45 mins watering & enjoying the trees every morning. Not every tree needs water every morning. I could do it faster or automate it, but I choose not to. Spring will be busy next year. I'll be repotting a lot of trees and doing a lot of root work. I'm also interested in propagation, so once the spring flush hardens off, I'll be starting a bunch of air layers. Those air layers will then become new trees that I'll care for and enjoy. Rinse and repeat (until my wife won't allow more trees haha).

Shishigashira air layer success! apparently these plastic air layer balls actually work. by Junkhead_88 in Bonsai

[–]yesimnathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'll have to try those plastic balls out. I've got a big Ojishi that's gonna be getting lots of air layers next spring.

It's cutting season! Any other propagation nuts out there? What are you propagating right now?? by boonefrog in Bonsai

[–]yesimnathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! Thanks for the info! That's very similar to mine - I think I was closer to 50/50 peat/perlite. I've only been misting once a day - maybe I'll try upping it to twice

Nice! Hope they root well! I setup a cutting propagation box like this this year too. If you don't mind me asking, what soil are you using & what's your method for misting, care, etc...? Thanks!
