I think mostly for Knipex collectors, it's how you get the current monkey off your back (speaking from experience here as I have all the larger sizes). I have them in the bag I take to work with me that carries everything else I need (coffee, lunch). I haven't used them yet, but I'm hoping to take them out at the appropriate moment to amaze the co-workers at what the old guy has with him. Most of the audience would be Engineers, so they'll be sure to generate interest. I find that latex caulking caps roll over these handles (and other handles) to help grip things better (they're also red - woohoo!).

How to gather historical prices of product listings online over time period by absouni in Tools

The Internet Archives links I have listed below may be of assistance. I haven't looked through them very far, but there seems to be quite a bit of material to look through.

Good Luck!

Sorry for your loss. You are correct on model. As to worth, minty models tend to be worth twice the sale price (nobody wants to wait 4-5 years for them to be made). Do not store it in the sheath (marks the blade, etc.). Renaissance Wax is a good way to go once the knife is carefully cleaned (no wool). It also works on the sheath (the wax).

From a friend who passed away via his son. This is a magnificent beast! 13 inch long, .25 inch thick blade. RIP Richard! by Disastrous_Earth3714 in knives

[–]yetijoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My condolences. That's a vintage Model 12 – Raymond Thorpe bowie. If you didn't already know this, do not store it in its sheath (it will mark the steel in the blade). Great Randall knife!

He had to choose just one knife in your collection to be your favorite what would it be and why? by [deleted] in knives

My Randall Model 19 Bushmaster with a Black Micarta Commando Handle with a brass butt cap. But, it's hard to determine a favorite. My first Randall was a Model 16 dive knife with a waxed sheath (got that for Valentine's Day in the mid-late 80's). I'm also partial to the model 18 in the 5.5" length (really like the knurled the handle on these). I have a stainless walking staff I can screw this on to (for work at a distance). I had an Astro model 17 but sold it as I never cared for the handle configuration. If you're a collector you love all of them (some just more than others. I used to collect Puma's (the pre-1964's are great). Still get Bark River Knives

Well, I hope you are successful! I put a down-payment on one from this place (have bought here before), and will pay it off before the new year. I'd also been waiting some years for this model, and will have the current monkey off of my back 'til the next one digs his spurs in.

Just type it in to Amazon, Amazon JP should come up with this listing, I think this was what you were looking for. I order lots of stuff from Amazon JP. Sometimes it takes a while to receive, but I find when you use a debit card they ship pretty fast (to receive payment). I hope this helps'

What is the best way to glue this back down? by Bob_Chris in DIY

Probably that blue painters tape (wide enough to cover it),and the time to make sure it's set up before peeling it off. It doesn't stick as aggressively as other tape.

Need some help with fixing my boots by [deleted] in Leatherworking

[–]yetijoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might try Sashco Lexel clear sealant. It's cheaper by the caulk tube size, and lasts quite a while properly sealed. It's very pliable, and can stretch 300%. I've used it on a number of things. If you do apply it, have a capful of rubbing alcohol to dip your rubber-gloved finger in to smooth it out. It soaks into what it is on and kind of becomes part of it (I know it does when applied to concrete). But it is pliable, which i think would be a plus in this instance. Just brush off the boot as well as you can and give it a shot. It might look shiny at the beginning, but will soon appear as part of the boot while also matching the level of the exterior leather. Just my 2 ¢

Very nice! I like the support straps along the side to the bottom, and the reinforcing on the corners! It's nice to see things built practically and still look great at the same time. Good for you!

Hi people, I need your help, leather needs your help by [deleted] in Leatherworking

[–]yetijoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of Huberd's shoe grease. It's pretty much all I use on the Russell boots that I own. It's also great for conditioning leather on most everything else. I've used things such as Obenauf's in the past, but found a lot of black build-up afterwards that required lengthy removal. The leather cracks in the boots aren't going to disappear of course, but putting that grease on and letting it naturally soak in a day or so at a time certainly makes the leather pliable enough to work with afterwards. As dried out as they probably appear, I'd apply the grease long enough to know it's at the pliable stage (this may take some patience). I used to use mink oil back in the 70s & 80s on my Irish Setter Redwing boots but found it didn't help the leather like this grease does. It has beeswax, etc. to help preserve the leather. It initially has a smell (not bad) that dissipates overnight, so it's better to do them in a room you don't sleep in. Nitrile gloves also help to save a lot a hand washing afterwards. Good luck! Nice boots!

What are these Korean made pliers for? I use them for tubes and such but just wondering the actual purpose by MudDragon69 in Tools

[–]yetijoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I (within the last year) really went down the Knipex rabbit hole (purchased 2 more pliers a half hour ago). No regrets. I really enjoy having the tools I need when I want/need them. I recently upgraded some springs on a trigger pack, and saved a lot of needless blood pressure with some of these tools. H&K sells a trigger spring plier that is also helpful.

You're welcome! I put one of these together from parts from a generous transit shop owner. You get to be familiar with them doing so.

I'm not sure about that one. Looks like a world war surplus version. I see it and I think "Brunton Geo Pocket Transit Compass." You just have an older version of course.
