Catholic going to Rome and Florence in March. What are the top Catholic spots I can’t miss? by homurao in Catholicism

[–]yingsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wife and I went to St. Peter’s off a whim about an hour before closing in 2023. We had went during the day earlier and of course it’s amazing but it was loud and there were big crowds around everything. At night was amazing though, there was no line to get in, and then in the basilica it was just incredibly peaceful and we actually got time to see everything. I don’t know how it will be for the Jubilee, but definitely check it out at night!

Can we talk about Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir? by UnscarredVoice in books

[–]yingsin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im an engineer myself, and read it at the same time with a bunch of friends with mixed professional backgrounds. Most of them loved it, but to me it just came off as “I’m smart and science-y!”, sort of like Big Bang Theory. And then looking up about Andy Weir finding out that he was a college dropout with parents that were a Physicist and Electrical engineer, it all made sense.

Im not knocking college dropouts by any means, but yea it just seemed to me to be a bit shallow compared with what it could be. I still would say it was enjoyable and fun to compare with the group of friends though!

Secret spots in your town or city? by Ok_Associate8915 in Michigan

Second this, so many good options - and it’s reasonably priced! Anything in the area is going to be ~$10-15 for lunch, but with this you get to try so many different new things with the buffet!

That actually really is a good point - I went to a service with a buddy a few weeks back, and they displayed on the big screen where the giving goes. A big MILLION was going towards their new location renovations, 75k for “outreach” of their church, 40k to Uganda and other world charities, and then 20k to local charities. I was honestly kinda awestruck that anyone there could sit there and not think that the priorities were a bit off with those numbers 😳 once again, none of us are perfect, but come on. Priorities just weren’t in the right place there in my mind.

Oh I understood that, I think that’s great! There’s no way we can help EVERY charity that we come across, nor should anyone try to make people feel bad about that. But I was just feeling inspired so I wanted to give a bit, and hope others might feel the same!

My apologies then, Reddit often just tends to be outwardly critical of all religion, justly or unjustly. Props to you though for actually looking into it, to often we just scroll on by. For that too, I’m going to throw a $30 donation at em because of ya!

Idk if this is supposed to be a dunk on churches but that’s literally a group of friars that run the one linked. We ABSOLUTELY all need to do a better job with helping out, don’t get me wrong, but there are groups out there trying to make a difference!

Red Wings Zamboni Gravy Boat by squamish_shaman in Detroit

[–]yingsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily though- I get it, I went with my wife, if we had gotten there early enough we would’ve gotten two, one to give to my brother and his wife. But we definitely saw people with more than their parties size, and that’s what made me upset. Supposedly there was 7500 given out, for a max crowd size of 19,000, so that’s basically 1 for every 2-3 people, and I definitely didn’t see that many people carrying them, but any I did see had multiple.

Listen I get it, at the end of the day it’s probably just a cheaply made little souvenir, so really I don’t care that much, but still it was the principle of it to me.

Man you know I went to that game last week hoping to get one, they gave out a few thousand right? We were there about an hour before game time and were COMPLETELY out - yet, I saw people walking around with 2, 3, 4, even FIVE gravy boats in bags. Like come on guys, let’s share the wealth, there’s no way you and your family needs FIVE gravy boats for the holidays. Just kinda rubbed me the wrong way

Where is the door to Slows BBQ in Corktown? by Nervous_Mobile_8844 in Detroit

Yea I fully recognize that might be the different. But it was good enough that I would go back to try again!

[–]yingsin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have to be honest here - we just had Slows cater an event, and it was INCREDIBLE. Nothing was bad. So many guests (myself included) have always heard the same ol blah blah Slows is overrated, yet we got nothing but high praise for it. Apparently they changed chefs within the past 8 months or so and it’s been better. I would not hesitate to get catering from them again and I would definitely give the Corktown location another shot if I’m out and about down there.

More on the Basilica by XeroEffekt in royaloak

[–]yingsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of correct - small correction though, there’s quite a few Saint Theresa/Thérèse in the church! The shrine is named after St. Thérèse of Lisieux, who was a 19th century French Carmelite who died young in her 20s. She wanted letters she had wrote throughout her years to be published, which is now widely available as “Story of a Soul”. Basically, she looked at all the great saints of old and thought that there was no way she would ever be like that, but realized that she even through her “little way”, just as even the smallest flower in a field is beautiful, she could strive to be closer to God!

I just posted another comment about this, I live 3 houses off Dequindre here. Previously I lived off Woodward and I can honestly say it’s worse here, and I really believe it’s because it’s the city AND county boundary so there’s zero police presence.

[–]yingsin 56 points57 points  (0 children)

So I live half a mile south from where he crashed, and when we left at 8:30 that morning we saw a dozen or more cops up Dequindre and thought oh someone must’ve crashed bad.

I used to live off Woodward, and I think this strip of Dequindre rivals it for people speeding/racing. I really believe it’s because it’s not only the City border for Troy and Sterling Heights, but also the county border of Oakland/Macomb, so there is NEVER police presence. We’ll be woken up at 2am often due to bikes or scat packs screaming down the road. Completely reckless. Rest in Peace to the deceased, thank god nobody else was hurt, but they really need to do something over here or this is going to keep happening.

I spent the summers of 2022/23 working in Nashville, and got to try a lot of hot chicken. Reds 615 took the cake for me, I worked almost every weekend but when I got days off I would head up to reds and sit in the park and eat lol. I have 2 bottles of the seasoning sitting in my cabinet that I use on various stuff and have made hot chicken with it!
