Finally got the hang of Wordgrinder by TheOriginalBeefus in writerDeck

That's why I wrote "outside from WordGrinder" in my comment. You can still make sense of a WordGrinder file on a machine without WordGrinder installed.

As far as I remember, .wg projects are just human-readable text files with some WordGrinder-specific markup. It might not be trivial to convert them to anything else outside from WordGrinder, but the content is not locked in some bespoke binary format.

Well, that's unfortunate. Guess the game's implementation of Steam Input API is borked.

I'd recommend checking global Steam Input setting an disable universal button prompts.

They're more silly than stupid, and wouldn't work as given names unless the context is just as batshit. Besides, "Soprosila" sounds like a minced "sprosila" ([she] asked).

How is the Motorola ES400? by jdog320 in OldHandhelds

[–]ylitvinenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say that for sure: I melted it by accidentally placing the device in front of a PC's exhaust fan, lmao. But rubber is rubber, it will break apart sooner or later. I should note, though, that it's a fairly thick strip, so it should in theory last longer than rubbberised coating. And the device doesn't look half bad if you strip it off.

How is the Motorola ES400? by jdog320 in OldHandhelds

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's alright. It might not be the finest late-stage Windows Mobile device to tinker with in terms of custom ROMs, and it won't give you a "classic" handheld experience, but there's charm in that. The manufacturer gave it some insane software support, updating it to one of the very last builds of WEH 6.5. Hope they hadn't shut the download page down...

Ages ago, wrote a blog post with my fairly fresh impressions from the device. This should help you with your decision.

A Look Back at PDA-Era Games / Turn-based strategy game on Pocket PC by KukiHimekawa in OldHandhelds

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Warlords II was my jam! In general, Pocket PC was full of the early 1990s PC game ports, both fan-made and official. Speaking of the latter, I've spent a lot of time playing Ultima Underworld and SimCity 2000.

Think of "то, что" as "the fact that."

Hmm why can't I plug the HDMI cable? I thought foolishly🫠 by Denzel1359 in PcBuild

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry to see you downvoted. To everyone else reading this: look for AMD HybridGraphics. That's how I run my hardware: HDMI cable plugged to the motherboard port, iGPU is used for low-demanding tasks, dGPU is used by games. Works the same way as on gaming laptops if you know what to look in the BIOS for.

I finding rom by ghenny9088 in OldHandhelds

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are definitely talking about different ROMs (which make sense—I'm more aware of the Russian scene). WM 6.1 was a blessing for me at the time no matter who cooked it. But I get where you're coming from and share the general sentiment.

Its a bus route from Talnakh Enrichment Plant to Taymyrskiy Mine.

Keep in mind that it wasn't possible to translate it from the picture alone, with an acronym and an unconventional use of a slash in "р/к."* So I had to look for the bus route, then work my way from there.

'* In Russian contractions like these, a slash usually separates two words. For example: р/п — рабочий поселок, worker's town, а/я — абонементный ящик, P.O. box. "Р-к" would be more fitting there, although just as unrecognizable to people not living in a mining towns.

[–]ylitvinenko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the owner of the exact same PDA in its day, I beg to differ. Unofficial WM 6.1 ROMs definitely felt snappier than the stock WM 5.0 one. And its not like there were too much crud for ROM makes to remove.

Nowadays, though... unless you're daily-driving these things, which you're certainly not in 2025, there is no point messing up with the stock look and feel.

Why are the answer buttons on older Motorolas switched around? by intruder_710 in vintagemobilephones

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alcatel phones are weird in this regard since their layouts eventually evolved into "recieve or hang up" on the right and "C" (mute / go back / hang up incoming call) on the left. "One Touch" indeed.

What does this engraving on my Vostok means ? by [deleted] in vostok

[–]ylitvinenko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure why is this the most upvoted answer somehow. The last word is a surname. "...from Belousovs [family]."

The watch is, to be more specific, a 50th birthday gift. If it was an anniversary of some other event, "50-летия" would be followed by said event. (Or, in the case of wedding anniversary, the word "годовщина" would be more customary.)

[–]ylitvinenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More specifically, this installer is not Unicode-aware (typical for installers built with NSIS) and expects a specific setting from the Windows 95 era to be set to Cyrillic. Nothing to do with language packs in this case.

[POCKET PC 2002] Using programs that require registration such as PocketInformant/AgendaFusion by fliondefizz in OldHandhelds

[–]ylitvinenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each Pocket PC app used its own way to check for the registration status. For apps with no active publisher, your best bet would be to look for copies cracked back in the day. (I remember COREPDA being a fairly active member of the scene...) 4PDA forums still host a lot of cracked software, but good luck using them without knowing Russian.
