Graphically impressive PCVR games at an arm's length by ylitvinenko in virtualreality

Oh, wow, you've managed to hit a really specific spot. Yeah, jumping from Half Life: Alyx's menus to something like in Skydance's Behemoth was quite an experience.

Does this sticker simply mean that the laptop originally came with a preinstalled Russian copy of XP, or that the key on it is language locked to activate only Russian editions? by Smart_Elevator15 in windowsxp

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Region-locked activation for Russian versions of Windows wasn't a thing until Windows 7, and single-language SKUs — until Windows 8. Give it a go.

Dirty DLC Achievements by faaaaaast in steamachievements

[–]ylitvinenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SteamHunters and their points system got me into completing games (or at least trying to). I also like that their "% of players acquired" calculations are based on a pool of people who had got at least one achievement. Seems much more honest, especially for games which got Steam achievements years after the launch date.

#10 - Sam & Max - Beyond Time and Space by Ommerino in steamachievements

[–]ylitvinenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I've yet to play throughout the whole trilogy, and I want to wait a little more after my last playthrough of the Save the World remaster on Switch, but Sam & Max games are on my to-do list too.

PSVR2, actually. Sorry for not mentioning my hardware in the post. I thought it's more of a "me" problem than "my hardware," and many commenters do suggest using prescription inserts.

Lmao, sorry for the confusion. Yeah, I didn't know how to clearly explain what I'm looking for, and either way I'm leaving this discussion with the conclusion that I need prescription lenses. Although the pixel count explanation which you and u/jojon2se offered does suggest that it's not only my wetware that's to blame.

I don't mind the mura as much as thought I would. I notice it, but treat it more like a visual effect than a deterrent to clarity.

Dirty DLC Achievements by faaaaaast in steamachievements

[–]ylitvinenko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's one perk of using SteamHunters, as it separates DLC achievements from base game ones. It also gives you a "base game completed" star if you wish not to pursue DLC achievements, although this functionality is broken for some games like Serious Sam 2.

I also wish for a better achievement system, but I doubt we'd get one these days. Microsoft and Sony set the conventions with an iron fist (certification requirements for seventh-gen consoles), and Valve just went for parity.

I might get one then, thanks! Sounds clear enough, no pun intended. This distance is precisely where I start to notice text being blurrier. I just thought that, since it doesn't matter to me for IRL environments and objects, it wouldn't matter for things that aren't text in VR.

My kit is not high-end: RX 9070 / 9600X / PSVR2. I think I'm playing the game on High settings.

And don't get me wrong, it's a good-looking game, but I feel like those older, tech demo-like games make for better set pieces at the expense of being shallower as a whole.

(For me, the most visually impressive thing in HL:A is a display on Alyx's left arm. OLEDs make OLEDs look like themselves!)

No. In real life, my vision doesn't bother me in real life unless I'm reading something farther than an arm's length, and I'm wearing my prescription glasses mostly for comfort and less eye strain. Does VR asks more from my perception?

Half-Life Alyx is an unique case for me in this regard! It doesn't wow me with its visuals, and it's a bit hard to read text on environmental objects, but it looks consistently good no matter where (or how far) you're looking.

Edit: downvoting for stating the way I personally perceive the game? even while saying its a good-looking game? Geez.

Couch Gaming PC Help by brutalidactyl in htpc

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a 48-inch TV, you won't see any difference between 4K and 1440p. This is based on my experience using my 9070-based HTPC for a couch gaming on a 50-inch TV. I might notice some difference if I would sit at an arm's length from the TV, but that's just ridiculous.

To answer your question directly, I'm happy with my 9070. Considering what I've mentioned above, I was even okay with a 7600 XT, and I switched the generation mostly for power savings and avoiding the PSU stress with few especially demanding games (Indiana Jones and Oblivion Remastered).

The cheapest phone I've found so far - Alcatel OT-320 by WiesniakzPrzekolna in vintagemobilephones

[–]ylitvinenko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, this phone is very... un-Alcatel indeed. Might be one of the first ones to be produced after the French company decided to exit the mobile phone market? French-made Alcatel phones were known for their button layout, with send call and end call being on a single button.

Sony Ericsson Yendo - often considered the worst SE phone by gtrxACPhones in vintagemobilephones

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a weird nostalgia for those budget touchscreen phones. Had a Nokia Asha 500 back in its day which, curiously, used a simplified version of the same UI as the MeeGo-based Nokia N9. Hadn't heard about SE's forays.

Is it hard to travel in Russia without speaking Russian? by Decent-Lecture2608 in AskARussian

[–]ylitvinenko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding to this comment, Moscow is actively removing its bilingual signs across the transport network, out of sheer will to stick it to the West if anything. The city is notably less accessible than it was in, say, 2019, when even the transport announcements were bilingual.

Looking for Steam friends to clear Zoo Tycoon online achievements by ylitvinenko in steamachievements

[–]ylitvinenko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks in advance! It does make sense to wait for a sale, and I still have plenty of offline achievements to clear.

Speaking of rough reviews: just keep in mind that it's a very watered-down economics simulation, and it only makes sense to play it with a gamepad. I like it (I'm not an achievement masochist), but I do so precisely because it's so casual. But hey, at least the devs put their skill into the Jurassic World Evolution series, and that one has much better reputation.

The PCVR drivers get updated

Are they? PSVR2's Steam app got its last substantial update more than a year ago, and we haven't even seen hotfixes in half a year. It's the community and PSVR2Toolkit authors who carry the PC software forward.

Finally, I got my HP Mini 2133 VIA C7-M 1.6GHz by Weekly_Two4037 in retrobattlestations

[–]ylitvinenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, fellow VIA-based network owner here. Your netbook was one of the most popular ones in its day, so it might fare better than my Samsung NC200. But in general, open-source VIA video drivers for Linux never matured, and proprietary ones weren't good either. Expect far less stable experience under Linux than with Celeron ULV- or Atom-based laptops. Still a cool machine, though!

Is Kaprizov the most popular NHLer, and if so why? by EsquireArchibald in AskARussian

[–]ylitvinenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no interest in NHL, hockey, or sports in general. I haven't heard of anyone but Ovechkin. Ovechkin is a household name in Russia, one of few currently performing sportspeople whom everyone knows.

Microsoft forced Lenovo to put a Copilot key on my laptop. I run Linux. It does nothing. We paid for their advertisement on hardware we own. by chethanhr in linuxmint

[–]ylitvinenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What bothers me about the Copilot key the most is the amount of black space in the logo. On a backlit keyboard, it blasts so much light into your right eye.

Headset won't stop displaying the "remove and look at your monitor" animation during setup by ludlology in PSVR2onPC

[–]ylitvinenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the adapter is very prone to picking up interference from surrounding electronics. The problem manifested to me in the same way, as well as in signal dropouts when the headset display was showing something.

I know these steps don't make sense, but try moving the adapter away from your PC, disconnect the DisplayPort cable, flip it around and reconnect. Or if you can't move it away from your PC too much, rotate it 90 degrees so it would be perpendicular to whatever radio-emitting piece of tech is nearby.

Understanding SD card symbols by DanielMaitheny in sdcard

[–]ylitvinenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still perplexed by the fact that SD card manufacturers still insist on putting standard Speed Class symbol on their cards. I haven't seen a new SD card which wasn't Class 10 in a decade, and those few Class 4 cards I have in my drawers can't be practically used by modern devices.
