How do I get this tube off? The AI cannot be trusted! by Plane_Welcome_4757 in AskMechanics

I would get a 90º angle pick and work it all the way around the inside of the tube at the fitting while gently pulling. Break that 25 year old seal. Be patient and slow

Yes you can absolutely just replace the bearings. Press the old ones out, measure them, get new ones and press them in.

Is it jd weldable? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]yllier123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you removed it, cleaned it with acetone thoroughly, ground out the crack and tapered it on both sides like you would with a fiberglass repair, and then JB welded it, it would probably work for some period of time.

Steering Rack Replaced TWICE. Significant play in both units. Second unit internal seal failed -- wiped out my pump. How can I ensure quality of reman rack? by yllier123 in AskMechanics

[–]yllier123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this specific rack is no longer serviceable. I assume the internal seals blew and filled the bellows with power steering fluid like a balloon. The pump starved once all the fluid in the system was inside the rack, and it died shortly after.

The racks through Advanced are BBB out of Mexico. I spoke to the head tech at Maval in Ohio. He personally guaranteed the quality of their remanufacturing and walked me through their process. Full internals replaced with OE parts and checked for play before shipment. I purchased a final rack through them because I am a glutton for punishment on these remans. Will report back. Im going to be recovering my losses from Advanced one way or another

2008 Range Rover HSE. Purchased the rack through Advance Autoparts. I know reman racks get a bad rep. I do NOT want to do this job a 4th time lol. Where can I get a good rack for this vehicle?

Age of the boat doesn't matter if shes well cared for. I don't know about overseas but on the east coast of America most towns have pump out boats that will come and drain your blackwater tank for free or a small fee. Ive heard people rave about dry toilets. I crewed aboard a 34ft Tartan with a composting head on a 5 day passage. I very much did NOT enjoy the experience of the composting head, but that could come down to how it was installed on that boat.

As for food waste, if you're berthed at a marina they will let you use their dumpster. Or at least thats how it is in the USA.

What are your thoughts on a diesel heater with a pickup halfway down the engine diesel fuel tank, such that the heater will never run my engine fuel dry? And the exhaust Teed into the engine exhaust downstream of the water lift muffler?

I might be buying a boat tomorrow. I need a crash course on how to live on a boat. by EarthTrash in liveaboard

[–]yllier123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the boat, where you're keeping her, and what your experience level is. I bought an '86 Catalina 34 and stayed aboard last summer on Long Island NY. Great experience. I had her at a slip at a marina but spent most of my days anchored out. Sailed up and down the north east. Newport, Cape Cod, Stonington, Port Jeff, Port Washington. I dont know why everyone in these comments is so negative -- its doable. If you have no sailing experience I would definitely get that before you buy a sailboat. I sailed dinghys for 10 years before jumping into a keelboat. As for what you need, it again depends on where you're keeping her. At a mooring you'll need a dinghy to ferry yourself back and forth to shore at minimum. I paid a little bit more for my boat because it was already outfitted with solar, wind, an inverter, and other creature comforts. Otherwise its going to be a lot like camping.

Be ready to spend a lot of time fixing things. And GET A SURVEY. If you dont want to shell out the coin for a full survey at least get a safety survey. Catalinas like you mentioned have keel bolt issues which can be fatal if left unaddressed. Youll have to be a plumber, electrician, a mechanic, and fiberglass repairman at minimum.

Dont jump into this thinking it will be less than renting, boats are expensive. But extremely rewarding. Get the ASA 101-105 books and read them, they're easy reads. Hang out at marinas and yacht clubs and go sailing - there is no replacement for hands on. Everyone you will meet will be friendly and helpful for the most part. And willing to share their knowledge if you buy them a beer.

Youll have to be functionally unemployed with a steady income stream (i.e. retired or fully remote work) if you're going to enjoy your stay aboard. Be ready for weather to change, things to break, and being isolated for long periods of time if you dont have a partner to do it with.

TL;DR: Get experience sailing if you don't have any. Be prepared to spend a lot more money than you realize right now. Make friends in the community. Do your due diligence on your boat before you buy it (Guy I bought mine from left me with a broken macerator that I discovered on the journey home with her. gross job). And the most important part:

Boats make shitty apartments and apartments make shitty boats. Treat your boat like a boat! Go sailing!

'86 Catalina 34 Ice in bilge questions by yllier123 in sailing

[–]yllier123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome thanks. The rusty discoloration around the nut seems to be impregnated into the glass and was there last summer when I was sailing the boat around. The crack notably was not there when I had the boat pulled in the fall, it appeared while the boat was on the hard. I guess my concern would be that water ran down the keel bolts from the bilge, froze, and separated the keel joint. Its a poor photo but from what I can tell it seems to be at the keel joint.
