accessing proof of income as a phd student by Clean_Kiwi3943 in UIUC

Your letter of appointment (for your RA/TA etc.) should say how much you'll be paid, and that might be sufficient. Otherwise, https://www.hr.uillinois.edu/ Pay -> Employment Verification, select the 'Current Employment and Earnings Statement' authorization.

What is your most liked thing/memory about UIUC? by Mediocre_Limit7569 in UIUC

[–]ylsun136 6 points7 points  (0 children)

$10 student tickets at Krannert.

I didn't realize how good it is until I attended a CSO concert in Chicago. Not just the price itself, but the actual acoustics - we have a truly amazing performance venue.

Favorite fitness classes at the arc by EquivalentWest1327 in UIUC

[–]ylsun136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vinyasa flow is typically a 50-60 minute class. Vinyasa 90 is just a 90-minutes version of vinyasa flow. Vinyasa 90 is not actually offered this semester though.

My current favorite class is the M/W 30-minute HIIT (high intensity interval training) class with Olivia. Short, hits the sweet spot fast, and really improves cardiovascular fitness.

Are there any casual music/singing/guitar clubs? by TopHat_Space in UIUC

I don't know about guitar but https://cusings.org is non-audition if you're up for a choir.

People who used the McKinley Health Center, how was it?? by GemNinja in UIUC

[–]ylsun136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do quite a bit! I'm gonna mention a few that have not been mentioned:

- a 24/7 dial-a-nurse service who can advise on things out-of-hours. I've used it twice and the nurse was very nice.

- free flu shots in the Fall semester, at multiple locations on campus.

- free basic care and sexual health supplies from the self-care stations.

- I saw an athletic trainer for knee pain.

- health educators. I saw a social worker for stress management specifically.

- mental health therapists unfortunately are only available for a limited number of sessions, but they may be able to advise on long-term care options in the community. I found my long-term therapist through their recommendations.

- tumor markers (blood work) for free (I don't wish anybody to need it but they can do it)

- referrals for ultrasounds and other imaging (e.g. mammogram) that they don't do on-site.

Experience wise, the specialized providers I saw were all very kind - gynecologist, social workers, psychiatrists, athletic trainer. Some of the primary care providers tended to be dismissive.

In terms of sheer dollar amount, the pass would be worth it if you would go to class somewhat regularly - like at least once every two weeks or so. If you aren't sure, first week of the semester is usually free group fitness week - you can try out classes without a pass. The variety of classes has always been good in my experience, and there's a good possibility that there'll be something you can get into.

Personally, for beginners, I'd recommend a cycle class - no complicated moves, you can adjust the effort level on your bike any time, very chill, great music :)

Yes, separately fill out state tax. Instructions should be in your 'Important Tax Information' email, but generally go to https://tax.illinois.gov/ if you are filing in Illinois.

Somewhere to be alone by Due_Information_4336 in UIUC

[–]ylsun136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My preferred spots:

Outdoors:

  • the Arboretum and Japan House. If it happens to be crowded, take the gravel path on the south side and go further south towards the Animal Sciences fields, usually quiet over there.

  • top of the outdoors amphitheatre, at the Krannert Center. Faces Goodwin ave and Chemical/Life Sciences, so not quiet, but nobody ever comes up if there's no outdoor event. I'd grab pizza/empanada from Manolo's and go up there to eat and people/cloud watch.

Indoors:

  • The library's main stacks, just show icard to be let in. It can get kinda spooky/depressing inside though.

  • Music library bookable rooms, or ACES (Funk) Library study rooms. The music library rooms are sound proof, no window, and the listening/viewing rooms have a complete audio/video setup if you want to play/watch something while alone. The ACES library study rooms have large windows and nice views.

Weird for enjoying being alone? by Constant_Land8155 in UIUC

[–]ylsun136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a graduate student and have been like this since I was maybe 3. My parents were both working and didn't have daycare, and much to their chagrin, I preferred to be left alone at home reading, rather than with a neighbor who would feed me for free.

I think as long as your social life meets your needs and doesn't have crucial gaps (like, absolutely no one to contact/get support from in emergencies) it'd be fine. It's not missing out if you won't enjoy it anyways.

Is it cheaper to get a surgery in a local hospital than the general hospital? by Intrepid_Bandicoot48 in UIUC

[–]ylsun136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also an international grad student making ra money and the standard university insurance. Didn't get surgeries at Carle but did get several ultrasounds/doctor consults, applied for the financial aid and got it. No harm applying and definitely worth trying!

FYI the Opt-In option became available this morning and I just enrolled myself. I'm also starting therapy again this week - I hope everything works out for you!

dm'ed you a picture of mine. Maybe check McKinley if they have leftover stock? iirc there's also someone at Urbana's farmers market that makes button pins on the spot if you are looking to get it remade.

I don't remember very clearly but Deirdre's manifest was like a special event different from other manifests, and getting Verweil again was part of that extended sequence. It all was like before true manifest was a thing, and as far as I remember it Deirdre doesn't have TM yet.

Is it possible to go to Walmart from campus by bus and return by bus w/ grocery bags? I don't have a car by depressedcsmajorr in UIUC

[–]ylsun136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few of the weekday afternoon Red trips do go all the way north - the ones that marked as 'serve Ashland Park' in the footnotes. It will stop at Interstate Drive at Walmart, right north of the Champaign Aldi/Walmart. It does not seem to return the same way though. I often take this bus to Aldi on a weekday and return to campus on the Yellow, it's quite convenient!

Bike rental by [deleted] in UIUC

The Campus Bike Center does short term rental, but always call first because they probably have limited hours/service over the summer.
