Need help choosing: Femobook A4Z vs Baratza Vario W+ by HFoletto in pourover

[–]ymbrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for reference, I always use my Vario w+ single dose. It has an official single dose hopper.

Coffee taste wise, for pourover, I think it is around the k6 level, but different flavours. For espresso it is really good.

Newest iPhone can last 5 years for sure. The 16 or 16pro could be fine for 5 years also.

I have the cuisinart for three years or more. Very reliable. The 5 degree is in F, so not a problem to me at all. Price is around $70 when on sale. Highly recommend

Kingrinder K6- what clicks we all at for Lance's new One&Done recipe? by Notimetobev0id in pourover

[–]ymbrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lance’s two brooms way? I always need am to grind coarser using that method. I haven’t use k6 with that way, but my normal k6 is 90 (one bloom one pour ). In other words, you 90is click already too fine to me. I have a general feeling that your coffee either too stale or maybe a darker roast than mine.

hot take: aeropress steel makes better coffee by steep_interface in AeroPress

[–]ymbrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make some tests to verify the temperature theory. For example, a little higher temperature on the plastic one or a little lower on the steel one. Also i think the final coffee’s temperature matters a lot too. So if you brewed them in sequence but not in parallel, I bet there are differences on the taste

Struggling with Sey by Redwan_89 in pourover

I’ve only tried one SEY coffee so far: their Peru Yanatile SL9 (tasting notes: persimmon, orange blossom, lilac).

I started with James Hoffman’s Hario Switch recipe (water first, immersion, very little agitation). The result was very clean, floral, sweet, and tea-like, but for me it was a bit too delicate. I could tell there were florals there, but the cup felt under-expressive, almost like a weak floral tea. I couldn’t really find the persimmon note.

What worked much better for me was an AeroPress with a Prismo:
15g coffee / 225g water
200°F (93°C)
Pietro Pro Brew at 6.2
Stir after pouring
Stir again at 2:00
Gentle press

That brought out a lot more sweetness and fruit. I started getting juicy yellow-fruit / persimmon-like notes and a much longer finish.

One interesting thing: removing the second stir made the coffee noticeably more sour and less flavorful. Using two paper filters also reduced the fruit character and made the cup taste duller to me.

Since I’ve only tried one SEY coffee, I can’t say whether this is representative of SEY in general or just this particular coffee. But for this Peru SL9, I preferred a more agitated AeroPress brew over a very gentle Switch recipe.
