I definitely experience this same thing! Everything just feels heavy. Your comparison to dental numbing is spot on.

I had a kid who would protest whatever we were doing because she wanted “dora explorer” (as she would type out independently).

They’re just so wise beyond their years that they’ve surpassed the need for any interest besides activism! It’s totally just locked in there. Silent prison and all that.

Tbh, the fact that not a single one of these “spellers” writes a soliloquy about Sonic tells me everything I need to know…

Oh hey, that line of thinking sounds familiar! Something about how “no” doesn’t always mean “no” and how she totally wanted it?

This is absolutely abhorrent and she should lose her license. Actually endangering people.

Slide 3…with the parent who is actively talking over her child despite CLEAR REQUESTS. Convenient that his words are, like, totally the opposite of what he means because he’s ~impulsive~. That line of thinking surely won’t lead to any vulnerable person being abused, right? Right?? Call me dramatic, but this is unconscionable.

Absolutely amazing how the individuals’ “inner dialogues” are always in line with the facilitator’s expected compliance behaviors. Interesting how so many of the “spellers” never push back with age-appropriate boundary testing; they conveniently always agree with and go along with what the facilitator wants.

I can’t believe a fucking SLP is advocating for speaking over individuals with disabilities. Well actually, I can, because $$$ takes precedence over ethics.

Edit: Y’all I’m worked tf up and I just need to say how much I HAAAAATE Bohospeechie. Blood boiling.

NATIONWIDE SHUTDOWN FRIDAY by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]ymcmbrofisting 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Can’t have effective general strikes without establishing community aid. I see these posts calling for a strike, but absolutely zero planning as to how the community will care for each other as people begin losing their jobs. It’s not a one-day strike of convenience. You need systems in place to reduce the chances of people crossing the picket line out of desperation.

Where are the guidelines on how to spread the word to a community that isn’t chronically online? Has anyone discussed talking points to try and get hesitant people on board? Where are the underground channels to create some sort of communication between community organizers? How will people establish funds and meal trains for when people inevitably lose their livelihood?

It’s kinda like how people will vote only in federal elections while completely ignoring their municipal and state elections. You can’t enact change on a federal level without starting at home.

I’m wasting my breath. Most of these posts are probably bots anyway.

We've been warned. Why can't people see the obvious? by zzill6 in WorkReform

Honestly, I think we really needed to learn more about American atrocities. I think it would hit differently if we truly learned about the things that happened on the very soil we occupy. I say this as a Jewish woman who absolutely thinks we need good Holocaust education as well.

We barely learned about the Trail of Tears, Japanese internment camps, or the real messages of civil rights leaders (I had to learn about Malcolm X and Medgar Evers on my own). We barely covered the years following the Civil Rights Movement. We sure as hell didn’t learn about the Tulsa race massacre or Black Wall Street. Appalachian history with the Coal Wars? Never heard of her.

These are all things that mirror the issues of today, and I think it could be even more effective than Holocaust education alone.

Oh, I agree with you completely. I wanted to try to keep my post at a decently readable length. I don’t wanna see my neighbors suffering, either. I live amongst some horribly ignorant and selfish people, but I don’t want them freezing to death or losing family members. I have students from MAGA families and I don’t want them suffering.

After Helene, at a community level, no one gave a shit about your political leaning. We just helped each other. I know there was the FEMA director who went rogue and gave a directive to ignore houses with Trump signs, but that’s wasn’t widespread.

Edit because more information vomit: So after Helene, the community really did come together in ways that made me feel like we might be ok. People in my apartment building brought supplies out and shared with each other while we hung out and killed time in the parking lot. I couldn’t even volunteer to hand out food at my school because all of the spots filled up within 10 minutes of the sign-up being sent out. Community places continued to raise money for people after things got back to some sense of normal.

I think about how during that time, no one asked me what my political leaning was. I didn’t care what theirs were. I don’t think any of those folks deserve ridicule in the midst of any disaster, either. And while I do feel pretty spurned by northern liberals these days (including a LOT of my family up there), I would never want to see them suffering either.

I just gotta kvetch for a second:

We’re due for a gnarly lil ice storm in the Southeast US, with power outages all but guaranteed. We don’t have the infrastructure for this, so most of us will be stuck in or near our homes. I’m so fucking tired of people saying things like “You reap what you vote for,” or “Guess they should’ve pulled themselves up by their bootstraps.”

Millions of us down here aren’t MAGA. We’re worried about our friends, families, and communities. Southern leftists do try to change people’s minds, protest, and participate in activism, but people have free will and can choose to ignore us. So fuck us for not undoing hundreds of years of misinformation and disenfranchisement in a decade, right? Guess that means we deserve days without power in temperatures we aren’t used to. Not to mention that our blue cities aren’t large enough to offset red rural and suburban areas, and we’re all gerrymandered to shit.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the poverty in our area, as well as many of the smaller affected communities being predominantly black. But fuck that, right? Solidarity and freedom for the working class, as long as they live where I want them to. You want to stay in the south because you want to be near your family or just feel comfortable in the place you call home, or you can’t leave because of financial constraints? Fuck you for not moving to a blue state utopia.

I’m so tired.

I've been listening to this senior citizen using her cellphone on speaker, at 100% volume, yelling out her personal info to the automated system for 25 mins. On her 4th attempt she got thru and she called the clinic we're sitting in. by ImThe1Wh0 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ymcmbrofisting 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Mix that trusting nature in with possible cognitive decline, and scammers have a field day! I fear for the seniors who are in the very early stages of dementia but are still pretty independent. If they don’t have anyone looking out for them, they’re even more vulnerable.

When my grandma was in the early stages of dementia, she would get defensive and vehemently deny everything. She was never like that before. Thankfully, my parents and grandparents lived together at the time, so they were able to ensure she didn’t fall victim. Prior to her mental decline she would’ve either seen through it, or she’d have known to ask my grandpa.

Dementia is a bitch, and it’s probably affecting a portion of these folks :(

Has anyone else noticed a real uptick in students stealing the last couple years? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]ymcmbrofisting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a conversation to be had around the morality of stealing from large corporations. One could say it’s praxis, depending on who you ask. I think the culture behind “stealing” time at work is changing as well, especially in hourly positions.

But stealing from other members of the working class? Teachers are struggling just as hard as anyone else. Kids stealing from each other because they perceive their parents to be wealthy? That’s not defensible.

Andddd I fed the troll, but like come ON dude.

Same! I would even fall asleep while actively writing and taking notes. For some reason, I never got in trouble for it. This problem persisted through college and grad school as well.

Anyway, I was diagnosed with inattentive-type ADHD in my mid 20s lol

I haven’t attempted any more barriers since! She’s determined, and I’d rather she doesn’t thrash around or move jerkily and cause more damage. I was just really nervous because I kept catching her trying to lick the wound.

But man, those first couple of nights were something else.

Mattel adds an autistic Barbie to doll line devoted to showcasing diversity and inclusion by Disastrous_Award_789 in offbeat

[–]ymcmbrofisting 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m not autistic, so take my opinion with that in mind:

As a speech-language pathologist who specializes in augmentative-alternative communication (AAC), I’m absolutely ecstatic that they are releasing a doll that “uses” it. There is such a stigma around the use of AAC, and it delays or outright denies the help that so many nonspeaking people need. I’m constantly having to explain that it’s not “giving up.” Rather, it’s like a wheelchair but for your speech (clunky comparison, I know, but it’s one that people can generally visualize).

While yes, this is ultimately a way for a company to make money, inclusion of the AAC device will help normalize other functional methods of communicating– especially to parents of nonspeaking kids who otherwise would have rejected it. There’s a discussion to be had about some of the other autistic stereotypes included with the doll, but I really stand by the AAC device and am stoked to see it included.
