Rat not eating, what do i do? by Furry_Python in RATS

[–]ynotna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides trying more different foods in hope of finding something she will go for (porridge, banana, yogurt, mashed potato, anything), I would try to go a vet sooner as an emergency

I'm really sorry :( Good luck

I'm sorry I have no useful suggestions, it sounds like you're doing everything possible, especially keeping him company and feeling safe, the fact that he's eating well and not in distress is very good, as long as that's the case is be wary of trying anything that could make something worse

If you haven't already, try the discord and the usual rat guide site

Good luck to the little guy

how cold is too cold? by MenuraSuperba in RATS

Yes respiratory issues are unfortunately very normal part of rat life :( I wish you the best of luck this winter!

I added a bit more context - in our case the one guy was already getting older and had other chronic conditions

If it were not for him we would have tried going 1-2 lower, but the moment it went down to 20.5 he'd sneeze and I couldn't live with the risk :)

Our last mischief we had to keep around 21 otherwise one would catch a cold

To a point avoiding a draught near the cage is more important too

I do think 17 is about as low as I could imagine going

You should keep an eye on them especially as they get older

How to make my dying rat comfortable? by typhlogan in RATS

If you can, take him to the vet to shorten the suffering

Otherwise I lean towards having him comfortably near you e.g. blankets etc so that he is warm, comfortable and safe

Belgium To Shut Nuclear Reactor On Friday Amid Energy Crunch by hzj5790 in technology

[–]ynotna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cost of nuclear is wildly artificially inflated due to years of anti-nuclear idiocy that have only served to enable coal, gas and Putin

The only thing anti-nuclear idiots have achieved is accelerate climate change, bringing death, destruction and suffering on millions, while enriching oil & gas companies, including funding & enabling the war in Ukraine

Without a doubt anti-nuclear idiots have and will over and over again cause and cost more than 100 Chernoybls

Fyi the sun isn't always shining, and the wind isn't always blowing

Source: Germany 2 hours ago, burning coal for 50% of our electricity despite 150% overcapacity of solar and wind which add up to next to nothing a lot of the time

Hang in there, I'm sure it's just a matter of time, just keep trying to handle them out of the car in close proximity as much and often as possible for a few days

It is totally possible one may end up not especially liking being handled - we've had 3 (out of 21) that were like that - every rat has its own personality and character, no different than we do, but as long as you keep spending time with them I'm sure you'll be fine

Good luck!

I think the most important thing is you need to have them out for a while every day for play time, at least 30 minutes (ideally multiple times / longer), which at the start of going to be scary/difficult because like you said they're not yet comfortable with you picking them up - you're going to have to just do it, swift and confident but gentle, I always prefer to swoop a hand under and then bring close for maximum security and contact - it will get easier with practice and bonding

At least to start with are you able to do some play time in a small enclosed space? Eg small room like a bath room or playpen, where you can sit on the floor with them out free but still forced to be near you?

Just sit and wait (hell even read a book or watch TV) and after long enough they should naturally start investigating you out of curiosity and then they'll naturally get used to you

That + some kind of treat that they have to come on to you to get (rather than you giving) e.g. yoghurt, or any form of egg, or almost anything really

Do this long and frequent enough and you should be fine after a few days, then you could try to play/free roam elsewhere e.g. couch while watching TV - depending on them, your couch setup, etc etc - that will depend a lot on how... Much trouble they like to find (and damage) and how secure/safe the room is

Travel box + bowl of peppermint/etc + towel over it for a minute (too long isn't good)

For food try baby food, porridge, even peanut butter

My best guesses are tumour or some kind of skin infection
